Mystic Snake in modern...too cute?

So I popped a Mystic Snake in a MM2 draft a week or two ago, and I started playing around with the idea of a simic and/or bant flash based tempo deck. But before I put too much effort into this, Id like to gather opinions on a card that basically Counterspell stapled to a bear.

To all "Insert card here in Modern?" threads: Shut up.

I'd rather draw a card than make a 2/2 in most decks that will play a four mana counterspell.

Wow Glis, I would consider that to be a bit hostile, but let's not go off topic.

Mystic Snake CAN work, but there are problems: restrictive mana cost, basically just a bear, only really good in one or two shells which are not top tier. And also, if you can manage to cast that, just run Cryptic. It's much better.

Sorry, just tired of people asking if a janky card is playable just because they think it's cool or whatever.

Snake isn't that janky, but it's worse by a long shot than Cryptic and so I'd advise against playing it.

I mean, yeah it might not be Cryptic Command, but most cards aren't. Doesn't mean it isn't reasonable to ask if it could be played. For one, it could be a reusable counterspell in a deck with something like Restoration Angel. It also does a better of job of putting pressure on your opponent because it leaves a creature behind instead of just drawing a card. Its also easier for decks that only splash to cast. And judging by that article, he isn't the first to think of Mystic Snake. Its not tier 1, but not everything has to be. All in all, it definitely isn't so outrageous that you have to attack him over it.

Not attacking, at least not trying to. Just attacking the people who post things that are a great deal less playable than Mystic Snake.

My apologies if I offended anyone.

I think it comes down to the whole "no stupid questions" thing. Yes, many cards are not modern playable at a high enough tier to really call them playable, but this website is for all kinds of magic players, not just the top tier ones.

I think it's interesting to see Mystic Snake being legitimately questioned. My buddy used to play an annoying control deck with the snake and Nulltread Gargantuan to reuse the snake.

First of all, GlistenerAgent, its pretty difficult to offend me, so were good. Unless youre an Eskimo. Ugh, Eskimos.

Anyway, i love brewing, have since i began playing back in 96. Took a decade and a half break before my brother bought me a duel deck on a whim, been at it ever since (still trying to make Kiln Fiend competitive). Thing is, my lgs is tiny, so i dont have a real feel for the national meta,so i throw my random notions and concepts out to you tru believers. At that point you or ChiefBell or Femme throw some reality at me and i either move on or brew against the current. I actually really appreciate the harsy criticism, if something aint gonna work, or bad in the meta, id like to know before i invest.

So TL;DR, prolly not gonna stop asking bout cards or archtypes, feel free to respond or not. I still like you. Unless youre an Eskimo.

(Disclaimer: Twanicus is actually a fan of Eskimos, and has many (1) friends who happen to Eskimoian.)

I can see Snake in an Eternal Command deck. Sounds interesting, at the very least. :)

Mystic Snake is awkward. People are right when they say Cryptic Command is better, because it gives more versatile alternatives, and a 2/2 creature doesn't do much in modern. However, in the right build Mystic Snake does better. Basically, the ability to re-use the snake is the only real method that it gets more value than Cryptic Command. In this, you have to build a specific deck for it to work, a blink control deck, and we all know control decks don't really have a strong place in our meta.
