Necrotic Ooze Infinite Combos

Modern forum

I recently created my first modern deck, Infinity Ooze (feedback appreciated). This got me thinking, how many infinite combos are possible using Necrotic Ooze in modern? Below is a list of the ones I have already found. Do you know another or a more efficient way to accomplish one already listed?

Infinite Combos with Necrotic Ooze :

Devoted Druid + Quillspike + Thornling = infinite trample damage

Devoted Druid + Quillspike + Scrib Nibblers = exile opponent's library

Devoted Druid + Quillspike + Birds of Paradise + Orzhov Guildmage = infinite life and infinite loss of life

Devoted Druid + Quillspike + Myr Propagator = infinite necrotic ooze tokens

Devoted Druid + Quillspike + Grim Poppet = infinite -1/-1 counters to distribute

Devoted Druid + Quillspike + Cinderhaze Wretch = infinite discard

Devoted Druid + Quillspike + Wickerbough Elder = infinite destruction of artifacts/enchantments

Devoted Druid + Quillspike + Hex Parasite = infinite removal of counters of any kind

Grimgrin, Corpse-Born + Bloodline Keeper  Flip is a good one. Combine it with Civilized Scholar  Flip for a near infinite discard outlet.

With creatures like the Ooze and Experiment Kraj , there's probably too many to list all of em. But one that I found with the Ooze is:

Necrotic Ooze with Splinter Twin on it + Grimgrin, Corpse-Born in the grave = Infinite Counters on the Ooze. If a Blood Artist is down, game over.

Turns out Ohthenoises's is better. Whatevs

Best is Devoted Druid + Morselhoarder + Spikeshot Elder . It never passes priority until it is too late.

Cool, thanks. I hadn't gotten around to looking in colors other than G/B yet.Grimgrin and spikeshot elder both seem great.

Devoted Druid + Quillspike + Bloodrite Invoker = more efficient way to infinite life.

Another good option is Myr Propagator taking Splinter Twin 's spot. If you can manage to get infinite mana you can make infinite oozes.

KingSorin says... #9

I'm confused. How does Devoted Druid + Quillspike gain you mana? Doesn't the mana from druid have to be used to pay for the Quillspike cost?

June 21, 2013 4:56 a.m.

Caes says... #10

@Ohthenoises, yeah that's a fun one. I have it listed up top.

@KingSorin, tap the druid for mana, untap it with a -1/-1 counter, and tap it again. You now have two green mana floating. Spend one to remove the counter and repeat. For all of the above combos though, all the combo pieces mentioned are in the graveyard and Necrotic Ooze is performing the combo.

June 21, 2013 12:57 p.m.

KingSorin says... #11

The problem with that is the Druid is already tapped Caes. So you need to put a counter onto it to untap it and put it at the start of the combo. This means you have to spend one more to untap it, for the combo to truly start, and then you haven't gained any mana.

Caes says... #12

Ah, KingSorin, I see what you are saying. For all the combos I have listed, each card listed is assumed to be in the graveyard and Necrotic Ooze is performing the combo. You are right, the only thing Quillspike and Devoted Druid can accomplish is an infinitely powerful quillspike. However, with the two in the graveyard, Necrotic Ooze can create infinite green mana and infinite power/toughness. Sorry for the confusion.

KingSorin says... #13

how does Necrotic Ooze change anything? He just takes on the abilities of the two. Don't you need Morselhoarder and Devoted Druid or something like that to gain mana.I just need someone to walk me through the combo, since with what you're saying, it sounds like you're tapping ooze for 1 mana, putting a counter on him to untap him. (1 mana, 1 counter). Then you're tapping him (2 mana 1 counter), then paying one to get rid of a counter (1 mana,0 counters) then you need to put counter onto him to untap him (1 mana 1 counter), then tapping him for 1 mana (2 mana, 1 counter), then paying one to untap him (1 mana, 0 counters). This keeps going around in circles and only netting you one mana. You need something that doesn't cost mana to remove counters or the combo doesn't work.

Caes says... #14

KingSorin, what you are forgetting is necrotic ooze gets +3/+3 each time it removes a counter from itself. Pump it to infinity using this process, then tap for mana and add a counter as many times as you need. For example, you want 100 mana. Tap for mana, add a counter, and remove the counter 100 times. This leaves you with a 304/303 ooze. Proceed to tap for mana, add a counter, tap for mana... 100 times. You now have 100 green mana and a 204/203 ooze with 100 -1/-1 counters on it. This works for any amount of mana. Hope this cleared things up.

Ohthenoises says... #15

@KingSorin that would all be true except the ooze gets +3/+3 for each counter removed. This allows you to add as many as 3 -1/-1 counters per cycle gaining you infinite mana. (At least until end of turn and the +X/+X wears off and the counters kill your creature.)

Another way to do it that circumvents Quillspike is to use the Grimgrin, Corpse-Born + Bloodline Keeper  Flip combo for infinite counters then remove all of them with Devoted Druid 's ability.

Turns out, with Devoted Druid , Quillspike , and Tree of Redemption in the graveyard, the ooze can create infinite life.

Cougz says... #17

those are well and good, but why beat around the bush? having Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Mogg Fanatic in your graveyard makes your Necrotic Ooze into an infinite direct damage engine. done and done.

October 27, 2013 4:38 p.m.

Caes says... #18

Very true, there is no end to the possibilities of either Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker or Necrotic Ooze . Combine the two and things get insane.

iBryguy says... #19

Although I don't quite know the usefulness of it without there being another creature in your graveyard to capitalize from it, but wouldn't the combination of Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker mean you could tap Necrotic Ooze , put out another Necrotic Ooze , which you could tap to put out another, rinse and repeat?

October 27, 2013 5:11 p.m.

Caes says... #20

iBryguy, Yep, that would be the case. Various ways to capitalize on this situation are having a Devoted Druid in the graveyard to untap all the tokens and attack, Blasting Station to sacrifice the tokens and kill opponents, or the above mentioned Mogg Fanatic to send over quite a bit of damage.

can someone walk me through the necrotic ooze druid quillspike and scrib nibblers combo? would there also be a combo with avatar of woe?

November 30, 2013 1:39 a.m.

Ohthenoises says... #22

t321livewire. You see how Devoted Druid + Quillspike in the graveyard nets you with an infinitely large Necrotic Ooze right? Well now that you have infinite size you also have infinite untaps thanks to Devoted Druid in the grave. Untap 60 times and their library is gone.

t321livewire says... #23

deathrite shaman too?

t321livewire says... #24

deathrite shaman? is there a combo with him aswell?

November 30, 2013 1:57 a.m.

t321livewire says... #25

ohhhh i get it now hahaha that is brilliant hahaha thank you very much for clearing that up for me

November 30, 2013 1:58 a.m.

Caes says... #26

t321livewire - Yep. First have Devoted Druid , Quillspike , and Scrib Nibblers in the graveyard with Necrotic Ooze on the field. Make Necrotic Ooze very big and procede to tap it to exile a card, untap it with a -1/-1 counter, and repeat until your opponent does not have a library. Necrotic Ooze will die from the -1/-1 counters when the +3/+3's wear off, but you should win on your opponent's next turn anyway.

Oh, another one worth noting: either Devoted Druid or Cinderhaze Wretch can combo off with Grim Poppet for a Necrotic Ooze fueled infinite killlins

ahh i'm tired. just noticed you are already aware of that one

Necrotic Ooze + Pili-Pala + any creature that adds two or more mana by tapping it (Palladium Myr , Elvish Aberration , Argothian Elder , etc) is an easy infinite mana combo

gufymike says... #31

xefe I think you want to have Grand Architect with Pili-Pala ;)

That's a great combo, but I play what I said in a golgari commander, so no room for blue.

Blakkhand says... #33

It's funny because a necrotic ooze thread was necro'ed.

February 28, 2014 1:31 p.m.

My favorite combo with Necrotic Ooze is Griselbrand . Because you draw a bunch of cards and then combo off.

February 28, 2014 4:29 p.m.

Caes says... #35

t321livewire With the Devoted Druid , Quillspike , and Scrib Nibblers in the graveyard, you can tap Necrotic Ooze for a green mana. Uptap it by putting a -1/-1 counter on it. Then spend the green mana to remove the counter and give the ooze +3/+3. Do this an arbitrarily large number of times to have a near infinite power/toughness on the ooze. Finally, tap the ooze to exile a card off your opponent's library, untap with a -1/-1 counter, and tap again to exile until their library is gone.

Replacing scrib nibblers with Avatar of Woe would indeed work.
