New Combo

Modern forum

I stumbled across the fact that Nine Lives + Solemnity is essentially a damage immunity. Was wondering if the community thinks this might have any application in modern, or if there's enough enchantment removal to prevent this from being useful (Abrupt Decay/Assassin's Trophy/etc). You could also use cards like Hex Parasite as a fall-back to remove counters from Nine Lives.
Nine Lives in particular is very nice because it comes packed with hex proof... but that doesn't do much in the way of protecting the necessary "B" component in this combo.
Maybe a new Esper control list with Nine Lives, Solemnity, Hex Parasite, Vampire Hexmage, and some way to find Nine Lives plus some counter spell backup?
Thoughts?

Well, sadly this was a combo tested day of release, as everyone knows the combo from the Solemnity and Phyrexian Unlife. Both are basically the same, but Unlife costs less white mana and doesn't lose to life-loss (that gets around damage prevention)

The bigger use is for Pioneer, where Idyllic Tutor is also legal. Try it out there. I've only seen a couple lists for Pioneer though a lot for standard, I think MTGgoldfish ran a video on it a few days ago, cool combo!

Ah, but with enough counter magic and redundant methods to remove counters from nine lives, can we reach a critical mass where there’s more ways to keep Nine Lives going than your opponent can reasonably remove?

I could see mono-white - Greater Auramancy, Idyllic Tutor, Leyline of Sanctity, Runed Halo, Sigil of the Empty Throne, etc. Nykthos could be used with halo and leyline to get lots of mana too!

Forget mill cards. Do either Teferi, Hero of Dominaria or 1 Elixir of Immortality and plan on milling your opponent by them naturally drawing their whole deck. Win the match in 1 game.

I was also looking at Jinxed Choker but that might just be a bit slow.

Or we just run a single Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and hard cast it turn 40... call the deck Emmy and Mr. Mittens

I got enough rough ideas for a deck. Find here: The Immortal Mr. Mittens.

I mean, one place where this could pop up is in the more fringe Enduring Ideal decks that pop up in modern from time to time. It suffers from a lot of the same problems from the aforementioned interaction with Phyrexian Unlife though having both is intriguing, its a shame they weren't for example, 2 mana. I wish you luck, of course this could be the next eggs which benefited greatly when it got the second Second Sunrise effect, but if nothing else looks like fun jank.

Another application could be in some form of mono-white, RW, or UW, prison type deck as a soft lock, admittedly though it wouldn't be the focus in this style of deck.

Nine lives also fails to just a simple good old Skullcrack, thats followed by winging with prowess creatures and a bolt....

Eh... the hope is to be able to lean on your countermagics when they go to Skullcrack. Not sure how consistent that is, as I haven’t really done anything with the deck beyond fishbowling, but that’s the hope.
