New to Modern
Modern forum

I have played EDH for several years now, almost exclusively, and would like to start playing modern with my brother and some of his friends. I need help with deciding on which deck(s) would be economical (100-200 dollar range) and fun (speculative). My idea of fun would be to not play the same game every time I pick up the deck.
Anyway, I have narrowed my choices down to a Living End deck or a Monoblack Infect deck.
Looking for thoughts, suggestions, opinions on these decks or alternatives that would allow me to enter into modern.

Living End is a very fun deck to play that is competitive, Mono-Black Infect is much weaker. Still, I would recommend that you play a deck that you think you will enjoy. Better to have a fun deck than one that is boring but wins.

Hi, a group of myself and a few other guys wrote that modern primer. I would agree with the above that Living End is the better but it's a little one-dimensional. What I mean by that is that every game you'll find yourself doing roughly the same things. If you don't mind that then I say - go for it! It's a good deck. If you do, then you might want to look at something more interactive.

@ ChiefBell would the mono black infect be any more interactive? My brother suggested a dredge decklist but I have not explored that as of yet.

Mono black infect isn't a deck in modern. I mean sure, it could be an interactive deck but it'd be pretty awful.
Infect needs pump spells like Giant Growth and Mutagenic Growth. Black doesn't have those.

If you want an infect deck your best options are to go with , but GlistenerAgent is the expert on it. I don't know how competitive you want to be, but I find Modern is fantastic for brewing up ridiculous decks that can be fun. If it's a friendly group with low level of competitive play I would recommend brewing.

Gravecrawler, Golgari Thug, Bloodghast, Golgari Grave-Troll. Those are your friends.

The problem is that basically all of the cheap decks are one dimensional. Both Green Infect and RDW make similar plays every single game.
Why don't you home-brew something and slowly add staples to it? Maybe something in the Orzhov colours or something?

gurthang034 if you don't want to go G/U, why not go B/G then? With some good black creatures, and green pumps!

Oh, and ChiefBell, I don't think the "home-brew way" is the right one. A home-brew will never be as good as a "real deck". Even though you fill it with staples!

Home brews can be great! They don't have to be awkward and janky. A midrange build with stuff like Courser of Kruphix, Chandra Pyromaster, Lightning Bolts, or whatever other good cards you have in your collection will be at least consistent. Slowly adding more powerful staples, like Lingering Souls or Liliana of the Veil will only make it better from there. The key is to make it your own!

Yeah...you can definitely homebrew something in Modern that can be competitive. Especially with the meta in as much flux as it in right now. I find my homebrew more effective than Splinter Twin which is kind of freaking amazing.

Recent Jund lists are homebrews, sort of.
The good thing about Living End is that you can fill your sideboard full of 1 and 2 mana hosers. Cascade board. Super spicy, and actually playable.

The problem with your saying "My idea of fun would be to not play the same game every time I pick up the deck" is that the goal of competitive decks is to play as close to the same game every time you pick up the deck. They may be casting different cards (Thoughtseize Vs. Inquisition) but the game plan is still the same. BGx wants to discard, land a fatty, remove your stuff. Burn wants to throw damage spells at your face. Scapeshift wants to cast scapeshift for a bunch of damage.
If you want a deck that can play several different game plans, I would recommend something like Shamans(a fairly inexpensive, though not particularly great deck) or UWR Geist. (Not inexpensive, but able to play control or aggro based on the needs of the deck)

Living is the better of the two. However, there is a great big primer on Modern as a whole here on T/o. I suggest you use it and figure it out for yourself:
