Hey guys, so my local shop is moving and getting a bigger place, so theyre adding Modern tourneys to FNM. I am poor, so I can really only spend up to like $70 on a deck. I have minimal cards for it, since I mostly play standard/limited.
Any deck ideas for a noob in the format who wants to get competitive?

Moved to the Modern forums.
Affinity tends to be pretty cheap. The only "money" cards are Mox Opal , Arcbound Ravager , and Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas , and the first two aren't necessary and the last one isn't prohibitively expensive. Glimmervoid is another "money" rare, but it isn't always necessary.

Affinity can be cheap if built on a budget. (It can get expensive if you include Arcbound Ravager s.) I'd recommend my own deck:domo-arigato-mr-roboto as a budget deck as only the lands cost much and even then it's just the Glimmervoid s, the rest of the deck's rares are <$6 and the 2x Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas are <$10.
(All pricing is based on when I acquired the cards not long ago.)

Hmm... Mox Opal seems to have hit a spike in price... Still though Affinity will still be your cheapest shot unless of course you build eggs. "Eggs", otherwise known as "Second Breakfast", is funny but you REALLY have to have the mind for it and NOT for newer players.

Ya, I considered eggs, but looking through deck lists, it made absolutely no sense...
KevinBasham could you maybe link me a soul sisters deck?

Eggs is about saccing everything then recurring it using card:Faith's Reward/Second Sunrise to repeat this process over again. You use card:Conjurer's Bauble to put card:Faith's Reward/Second Sunrise on the bottom of your library then use Ghost Quarter on your own lands to thin out your basics and shuffle the cards on the bottom into the middle. All of this should net you infinite mana/card draw/cards going to the graveyard/cards entering the battlefield/damage if done correctly. Most players playing against eggs will make you play it out till you get the one or two wincons in your hand then they will scoop.
Eggs is quite good against Jund just because there is very little Jund can do aside from killing you quickly to stop the combo. (Non-withstanding the errant Ancient Grudge .)

Yea, it still seems a little wonky. I can see though why its not for the new player...
And Soul sisters seems really straightforward. Which is good, but sadly all the ones im seeing are not very good and are all varied.. or at least i think so. They seem to focus on one win condition ( Serra Ascendant ) and dont have too many ways besides eos of getting there...

Soul Sisters tends to be poorly equipped to deal with combo. Aggro can even outrace it. Lifegain is generally pretty irrelevant and makes for a weak strategy, especially in combo-heavy metas.
I recommend going for affinity or even storm (most storm cards are pretty cheap, since they're commons).

Cost to power Affinity will get you there. Storm is pretty fun too.

Can you build storm without the shocks and fetches? The fetches are like $30 last I looked.

Yea, I saw a combo storm type thing involving izzet guild mage, splicing mana onto a 3 damage spell for an insta win. I really like the idea of it, but idek where to start cuz im not used to such a large amount of cards available to for use

You lose a LOT of your draw. Serum Visions and Slight of Hand.

That isn't a very efficient strategy, in my opinion. Many important storm cards are blue or green (although most are Phyrexian/hybrid) and Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle isn't suited to a storm deck. Storm likes to win in the early game, which means no ETB-tapped lands and no turn 7 (the earliest point at which Valakut could trigger, assuming you don't miss a land drop).

Yes true, true... but if I was to spend the money on u/r land, I was thinking maybe i'd rather commit to Splinter Twin? I feel thats more of my flavor

splinter-twin is awesome and is pretty budget friendly if you are starting to invest in lands.
Mutliplying-Mites is my version, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker doesn't really need to go in there, same with Spell Snare .
Fun fact: There are splinter-twin decks that side for Storm and vice versa.

I'm currently playing Soul Sisters in Modern (my deck list is here: Mono-White Lifegain).
Re: vs combo - we bring in Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Rest in Peace (since Storm relies heavily on Past in Flames ), but it's not a great match up. You could also sideboard Rule of Law if it's that bad.

I hate to recommend Soul Sisters because while it can give Jund a nightmare, it can also get stomped by Jund based on what cards are drawn. Jund is ubiquitous in modern, so it's a good deck to plan around.
Anyway, yeah, look up Soul Sisters. It's cheap, it's effective, and it can win games. It's proven to be a decent contender in several tournaments.
