Obzedat, Ghost Council is a card that really interests me. I just don't quite know where to put him. I've tried a RBW blink deck with him Norin the Wary and Restoration Angel for etb effects. But it didn't seem to quite work out. What kind of deck do you guys think he would fit well in? Or is he just a hopeless cause.

So. He is a 5/5 for 5 who drains for 2 and can't die to sorcery speed removal.

Path to Exile is a thing, for 4 mana you have combo decks winning, for 5 mana you have kiki jiki and reanimating elesh norn. He has to flicker if you want his drain, otherwise he is a vanilla 5/5, meaning he is generally worthless as a blocker.

I don't think he is viable at all.

5 might just be too high for a creature that doesn't necessarily win the game. i agree that it's an awesome creature, but dying to a 1-mana Path to Exile or Dismember is a gut punch. Thragtusk barely sees modern play, and i'd argue that he's easier to cast, more upside with blinking, etc.

in the end, i think obzedat is too expensive to cast, and there are other more powerful creatures in modern to try to cheat out.

Unless a card comes around that breaks it, this is not likely to happen. There are just better reanimation, ramp and pod targets, if it doesn't win you the game and has a cmc of 5 or greater, it's probably not Modern viable.

I run Obzedat in a modern deck, but I wouldn't say it's competitive. Definitely a casual deck for kitchen table play
