Oh Snap...Caster Mage

Modern forum

I was not around when he came out nor have I played Modern or anything to see why he is good so why is he good? I get flashback being pretty good but its only one card when he comes in and its only until the end of the turn. Does he just help with combos?

He is very flexible, he is any card 5-8, imagine having access to 8 Lightning Bolt that's 24 in burn , or to reuse a counter spell later and then eventually beat away at the life total

Snapcaster Mage gives any deck more of what it already wants. Need another Path to Exile for a Deceiver Exarch ? Just Snap it back. Your opponent is at 6 and you only have one Lightning Bolt ? Just cast it and Snap it back. You can see where I'm going with this. He's basically 4 copies of whatever Instant and sorcery you might need at the time. Also, he's a 2/1 for 2 mana, which has proven to be a fine card in every format.

Yes, very often.

Let's say you run U/W/r control in Modern, and it's turn 6. You have 6 lands in play, and a Remand , Spell Pierce , Path to Exile , Cryptic Command , and Lightning Bolt in your graveyard. Which card would you rather topdeck:

1: Another copy of any of these cards

or

2: Snapcaster Mage ?

Snappy functions as copies 5-x of pretty much any spell in your deck, provided you've cast it already. Giving yourself the flexibility to cast any spell in your graveyard is significantly stronger than drawing any of those options by themselves. He also provides board presence. 2 power goes a long way in Modern if you can keep the board clear.

So I wanted to tell someone and I'm going to use this thread as an excuse to. I got my first ever Snapcaster Mage today through some trades, and was pretty happy. I've been trying to pick up some pieces for my Modern combo decks.

But then, only 2 hours later, I traded him away to get to my new promo Cryptic Command . I love the full art Cryptic, but I feel sad that I never even got to use Snappy.

Goodnight, sweet prince. That's my story. Hope you liked it. I did.

If you want 8 Path to Exile s, 8 Lightning Bolt s or 8 Remand then you can use snappy. He is basically a Clone for instants and sorceries.

Death_The_Kid I think a more relevant question would be "does he often get cast without flash?" I don't think I've ever seen him cast in a main phase, unless in response to a spell. The flash is the most important part of Snapcaster Mage . Without flash he'd be a fairly mediocre card. Even if you don't need to get an instant or sorcery back, he is a nice surprise blocker against Geist of Saint Traft , and any other 1 or 2 toughness attacker for that matter.

also speaking of traft why is he really popular? you can just block him once and the angel never comes back i dont see him as a threat lol

Because in the right deck, the opponent's board is often clear of any threats, so he's free to swing in for 6 damage every turn. The hexproof also means that combat is basically to only way to get rid of him (except maybe Liliana of the Veil ). Even if your opponent does have a blocker that can trade with him, you can either not attack or, if your opponent's life total is small enough, hit for 4 damage with the angel even if the Geist itself is blocked.

@TitansFTW I've cast him in main phase to flashback Ponder when that was in standard. So it's a thing. But rarely.

I guess if you're really desperate, you can grab yourself another Serum Visions in Modern, but it seems like a bit of a waste of a Snappy. I for one have never played one in my main phase when there's nothing on the stack.

Thank god I don't play vintage. I'd hate to be the guy on the receiving end of 2 Time Walk s.

This has happened to me in a small tournament. I was playing MUD. He was playing Grixis control. We went to time while I had a Staff of Nin out, and he was at 3. I would've won even if he only cast one time walk. But no. Time Walk, Snapcaster Time Walk.
