Potential or Underused cards/archtypes in modern.

Modern forum

I would like to take a look at some of the underplayed cards, and where they could see a home, as well as possible decks. But for now I would like to see what cards have potential. Criteria: 1: How accesable is the card to decks, and popular decks? 2: How much power does this card have? 3:How effient is this card for it's mana cost. 4: How flexible is this card in multiple situations. 5: Could this card start a new archetype or support and existing archetype. Sorry this thread looks kinda wired, I am typing it from an handheld.

Honestly, I have no idea how to answer this. I don't really think about cards that don't have homes in modern, I just think about the cards that do.

Outpost Siege

C1 : Very. Single Red is doable for most

C2: Power? A bit. turns board stalls favorable and extra cards is extra cards

C3: Debatable. 4 mana is a bit but it is appropriately costed. It's easier than Chandra which cost the same for similar function (but cost 1 more red)

C4: Extremely Flexible. Modal = better! It is good when you're ahead. Good when your behind

C5: It's been wonderful in my mardu attrition build. It can really do well in Young pyromancer type decks as well as Jund

Yeah, there's one! When that was spoiled I was thoroughly impressed.

I honestly think that Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest should see modern play in either UR delver or UWR Midrange, he seems really good to me.

Well, the pool of underused modern cards is about 99% of the total pool of cards.

My vote - every single planeswalker aside from Lili. Seriously, Tamilyo, several of the jace's, sorin old and new, elspeths, tezzerets, now even narset.

All of these have so much untapped potential it is criminal they are so underused.

There was the esper delve deck that Chapin ran at the protour that I feel like it really has a lot of untapped potential. I mean it 0-5ed there or something like that but he may have been on to something. A turn 2 task gut or angler with protection is pretty intense.

Ok, well I'll post my pet card. Heartless Summoning.

  1. You can run it in any creature based deck, and it doesn't have a restrictive mana cost.

  2. The card has little power, but being able to play things ahead of curve or for free is very strong.

  3. It is very efficient. If you can land this turn 2 on the play, they likely can't even respond to it. It also increases the efficiency of your creatures.

  4. It isn't quite as flexible, it does one thing and only one thing. However, it can be used either as a value card to play something like Lodestone Golem for cheap, or to combo off with Myr Retrievers.

  5. There are a couple people on this site working on U/B Heartless Summoning combo that uses Myr Retriever, Myr Moonvessel, Havengul Lich, and Altar of the Brood to do infinite combos. I've also experimented with the card to try out Mono Black Tron, but it wasn't as strong as G/R Tron.

Another one that I also think should see more play is Smallpox

  1. It's a cheap card, and it can be run in black decks. Not quite as easy to splash for.

  2. It kills creatures, lands, and cards in hand. When you are running a good deck, this card is a 3 for 1.

  3. 3 for 1's are pretty sweet.

  4. It can keep you ahead of the game, it can kill the enemy's stuff to stop being behind the game, it screws over Scapeshift a little. You likely won't be sitting on this card not casting it.

  5. LoamPox is already an archetype, although it has lost popularity. I personally would love to see a LoamPox deck that runs Tasigur, the Golden Fang

Tasigur's Cruelty is much better when you're playing Smallpox.

I can list one of my favorites that I endlessly deckbuild for.

Immortal Servitude

Criteria: 1: Three colored mana is pretty restrictive and the card has to be built around to be effective, so one or two color decks, generally. Soul Sisters already sometimes runs this.2: How powerful is it to get back your whole graveyard, full of Hatebears or Young Pyromancer or Tarmogoyf or what have you?3: Five mana is a lot. Bringing back 5+ creatures from the grave costs a LOT more than that, usually.4: It's not about flexibility so much as it is a win con in and of itself. Play one card, have an enormous boardstate.5: Again, this needs to be built around- but I have been running Hatebears, Pyromancer-esque decks, and a wizard tribal build with it to great effect.

Sounds kinda like Living End

I play Percy Pox Abyssal Persecutor is probably the best mono black 4 drop creature in modern.

I believe the best 4 drop mono-B would be Phyrexian Obliterator

I gotta say Lotus Cobra. I might play too much bant... nah, I must be dreaming.

Krenko, Mob Boss. I want to make mono-red goblins a thing with this card. I think it just costs too much though. And it doesn't have haste? Boo. Lol

Results speak for themselves but in the sake of avoiding another thread arguing with you, I'll ask you to take it to my wall if you have further input

Jeskai Ascendancy is under-explored. In standard, people have realised how to use it, but we haven't done it yet in modern.

March 13, 2015 8:14 p.m.

Chained to the Rocks is one of those cards. They say it might be bad cause of the match up with some land destruction deck. My suggestion would be to side it out for that round. Then usually people dont tech more than one ghostly quarter n you have 4x copies of chained. So there's that
