I suppose I'll call this the official PT FRF discussion thread for Modern.

Go!

bijschjdbcd says... #1

And Miharas Twin had at least 3 maindeck.

Top 8 decks

Go U/R Twin!!

I am really glad that Jacob Wilson got into Top 8, because his deck is one of the more creative ways to play Abzan, but also kind of play pod.

I'd much rather different sorts of Abzan running around than the same 75.

So Justin Cohen is making me really want to play Boom Titan or whatever the cool kids are calling that deck these days. Just watched his deck tech and coverage, and wow... It's like Pod, but with lands. And you can turn one win. And its a green deck with no goyfs. I'm sold.

Those Abzan decks are really bloody weird. Cutting Dark Confidant is a decent meta call against burn and general aggro - fine. But then to cut Scooze in favour of Tasigur (is it Tasigur or Tasigar?) is really weird. Either you expect aggro and you go all-in on the early game, or you don't and you go all-in on attrition. I'm really not a fan of those decks one bit. Also butting things like Disfigure, Slaughter Pact, and Maelstrom Pulse for Path to Exile? It's like people have forgotten how to play an attrition strategy. Giving your opponents extra land and removing card draw from your deck, does not a decent attrition deck make.

ChiefBell says... #6

butting should be cutting.

ChiefBell says... #7

Can someone who watched the games tell me how often Tasigar's ability was actually used? I've had no success with it so far.

February 8, 2015 5:03 a.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #8

I keep seeing people talking about his ability, I think his real strength is his efficiency.

February 8, 2015 5:19 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #9

Moi, aussi. Me also. I think his ability is very bad. I've tested him and had no luck. I'm interested in finding out if it performed well in the PT.

Clickable link to the top 8 decklists over at WotC (ty Zuckfat).

As far as Humble Defector goes, I've been hearing of a deck being brewed for Standard that uses it with Refocus in Jeskai to draw a ton of cards and get a bunch of prowess triggers.

People are probably favoring Path to Exile over traditional Rock removal due to constraints on the mana base. With such a large shift in the meta with Birthing Pod and blue delve spells getting banned, I suspect people were planning on encountering Affinity, Junk, Burn, Scapeshift, Summer Bloom combo, and Twin.

Looking across sideboards, we see more copies of Leyline of Sanctity to deal with burn spells, Scapeshift, and mirrors (when appropriate) than usual. There's more copies of Stony Silence, Fracturing Gust, and Aven Mindcensor as well. This is on top of the usual Siege Rhinos and Lingering Souls we've come to expect.

They may have wanted to play stuff like Victim of Night, Maelstrom Pulse, etc., but went with what was easier to actually cast after doing tons of playtesting. Eric Froelich is even playing Noble Hierarch, which doesn't exactly cast black removal spells when you want her to. One only needs to look at the other sideboards filled with Blood Moons, Ghost Quarters, Molten Rain, and Fulminator Mages to see why they'd want to play cards that can be cast off basic lands.

@ChiefBell

Tasigur is incredible. Every game I watched him activated he either got a relevant removal spell or a backup Tasigur (which isn't optimal, but that way if they kill it you can keep the pressure on).

ChiefBell says... #12

I need practice with him. Like him as beater. Not sure about ability yet. I'll play more.

Scorprix says... #13

@ChiefBell: Ptthhh, I don't like him because of his art. Like, why the hell does he have a banana?!

February 8, 2015 11:26 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #14

ChiefBell - I saw him activated twice on camera (I didn't watch all weekend), and he got back a Path to Exile one time and a Thoughtsieze the other. Both of which helped the deck with Tasigur, the Golden Fang win those games.

So, Amulet of Vigor combo to be in the finals? Sweet. I really hope the deck wins, I dont know how it matches up against splinter twin though. It seems like a race, especially since amulet combo cant interact with Splinter Twin all that much.

February 8, 2015 3:09 p.m.

Jelger has Blood Moon in his maindeck and boards in a third, so it could be rough if he goes to the finals.

February 8, 2015 3:16 p.m.

sylvannos says... #17

Yah it seems like Tasigur, the Golden Fang is copies five through six of Tarmogoyf. Shame I didn't grab a dozen copies when he was $2.50. He's not even seeing that much play in Standard, so his price seems to be entirely from Legacy and Modern.

@GlistenerAgent: Oh shit I didn't even see Jelger Wiegersma's maindeck copies of Blood Moon...that's hilarious hahaaha.

Who won?

February 8, 2015 5:40 p.m.

Baltec says... #19

Antoni Del Moral Leon with UR Splinter Twin

February 8, 2015 5:44 p.m.

Antonio Del Moral Leon on Twin won. Not bad, kinda happy that a good matchup for my deck won the tournament.

bijschjdbcd says... #21

Interesting, I had to go to school so I missed games 2-5.

Thank you, I like the idea of Grixis Twin for Slaughter Games against Scapeshift.

February 8, 2015 5:54 p.m.

Dickmann posted his Grixis Twin deck on his Twitter. He goes by 0fe1ia.

February 8, 2015 5:56 p.m.

Zuckfat says... #23

Twin wins!? Wooot!! Oh wait, I mean ban it!!

February 8, 2015 6:12 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #24

Wouldn't suprise me if Amulet gets looked at to for potential bannings

February 8, 2015 6:15 p.m.

Zuckfat says... #25

Are you joking? Cause I was..

February 8, 2015 6:25 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #26

That Twin should get banned?

February 8, 2015 6:30 p.m.

Scorprix says... #27

Damn, I hope amulet doesn't.

February 8, 2015 7:02 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #28

Well it can take a while to go off and if can theoretically breach the T4 Rule for Modern.

February 8, 2015 7:04 p.m.

Zuckfat says... #29

No bannings.. I was just joking, seems to be a visceral response to unfair decks and interactions. Plus, I play u/r twin, so no, I don't want it banned or anything else.

February 8, 2015 7:50 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #30

I play Twin also, Im just saying that Amulet breaks the Turn 4 rule, Not saying it should get the ban hammer just that it could.

February 8, 2015 8:01 p.m.

Dalektable says... #31

Amulet is too inconsistent and doesnt see enough play to warrant a ban. Plus, It takes a really good pilot to play the deck, which is why the player made it so far.

February 8, 2015 9:08 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #32

Its popularity will increase, Pod was hard to play, Granted not as inconsistent but I doubt amulet would have made it that far in a lot of different tournaments if it was wild and incredibly inconsistent.

February 8, 2015 9:13 p.m.

Zuckfat says... #33

I agree with dalektable...

February 8, 2015 9:49 p.m.

Dalektable says... #34

Pod is on an entirely different level from Pod. Pod was a phenomonal deck, and had a wide variety of options, synergy and answers. Pod could win in X different ways, and had something to do in virtually every situation. Pod was not overly difficult to play, I tested it extensively and honestly if you know the modern metagame you can play Pod effectively. Amulet Combo, on the other hand, is not nearly as consistent, much harder to play and learn and is somewhat of a meta call on whether the deck will work. Pod just worked. I don't think It's terribly inconsistent, however the skill required and inconsistency will prevent this deck from reaching tier 1 status i believe. But thats just my two cents.

February 8, 2015 10:08 p.m.

Dalektable says... #35

*different level than amulet. I really should read my post when it gives me a preview.
