Relatively cheap ideas for a Modern deck

Modern forum

Hey folks!,

I think I've taken my modern deck, A Hard Pil(i-Pala) to Swallow, almost as far as it can go, and I'm looking for a new challenge.

Can anyone suggest any budget Modern decks? I'm interested in tribal, and especially artifact affinity, but acquiring a playset of both Inkmoth Nexus and Blinkmoth Nexus cards are kind of out of my range!

Open to any suggestions!

Modern Goblins

You can make it cheaper by dropping Cavern of Souls and Blood Moon .

Check out my Pyro Ascension deck. Wins on turn 4/5 and the only expensive cards are the lands (I still need 3x Scalding Tarn and 2x Misty Rainforest ). However, that's a lot cheaper than something like jund, which needs 4x Dark Confidant and 4x Tarmogoyf .

CHeap modern decks include but are not limited to: U/G infect, Pyromancer Ascension storm, mono red goblins, battle bots, R/B burn, Second breakfast, soul sisters, and enchantress.

Define exactly what your range is. Everyone's definition of budget is a little different. I built a Modern affinity deck, and the Inkmoth/Blinkmoth sets were among the least of my expenditures for it.

I've not spent a ton of money on my Modern burn deck though. I could spend a ton of money on it, and that may be a project for the future, but the "budget" version of my deck is still a turn 4/5 win.

I kind of ran with Azure124's idea of a pump infect deck and made An Incredibly Alliterative Increasing Infect Deck, I already had some pieces so it wasn't that bad. I'm generally looking for options under $100. I already have another modern deck that I sunk a lot into, and I need something cheap to focus on.

May run with the Goblins idea too. My problem is I haven't been playing long, and don't have a massive collection, so often I'm buying from scratch!

Infect is a lot of fun, and can be built on the cheap. And people usually freak out when you start handing out poison counters. (Well, they do at my LGS in any case.) And if you find yourself in a position later to spend more money on improving it, you already have a solid base.

Yeah, that's how I usually roll, start with a solid base and spend on it over time. That 2012 illusion event deck 'Illusionary Might' was a fantastic springboard for me into the game!

That's how I feel about the Wrack and Rage event deck from the RTR game day. Granted, there's almost nothing from that deck that I'm using in my R/B now, but sometimes it's just about the experience.

Oh, and watch out for Melira, Sylvok Outcast .

Yeah, she's very narrow though, I KNOW what most of my opponents would play, and they won't be running her, though they might when I start playing infect, haha. Hopefully I can just straight up kill her, as she is just a 2/2 with no evasion, or I may add some Dismember s.

If infect doesn't work out for you, I've heard that monoblue tron can be pretty cheap. I don't play tron personally because I can't stand the archetype but it's definitely worth checking out if you enjoy that sort of thing. Most monoblue tron decklists Ive seen run for under a hundred dollars and you can probably get away with paying a bit less.

Relentless Rats without Thrumming Stone? Where is the fun in that?

I looked that deck idea with the Relentless Rats up, thinking I could get them really cheap, evidently they jumped in value with the pure rat decks and they're about $2.99 :/

@Alonzo: I wanted to make a rat deck for edh with Marrow-Gnawer as my commander, but can you imagine buying something like 30 or 40 Relentless Rats at $2.99 a pop?
