Rest in Peace

What is everyone's opinion on running Rest in Peace in the mainboard to hate on Dredge, Phoenix, Hollow One, KCI, etc. Is the current modern Meta heavy enough on graveyard recursion decks that RiP main is better than Snap/Logic Knot/Azcanta? Asking mostly for strict U/W but I guess the same principal applies to Jeskai/Grixis/Esper/Midrange etc.

Possibly. It does a lot of work, even against Jund with Goyf. I would probably make the switch.

It does tend to hit alot of good decks at the moment, but that kind of tech card always worries me in comp when it can be a dead draw in a close game against anything it doesn't hit. If your deck runs black, maybe Nihil Spellbomb is better mainboard simply because it fuels Fatal Push and potentially cycles?

I really like Riley Knight's take on it (source):

Playing Rest in Peace in a Modern main deck is bonkers. Sure, sometimes you draw it in a matchup like Humans and feel like a cloth-eared buffoon, but slamming it on turn 2 against Dredge, KCI, Hollow One, Hardened Scales, Storm, or Death’s Shadow feels great, and it even has marginal upside against Jund, Rock, White-Blue, Infect, Affinity, Mardu, and various other fringe decks!

FWIW, I currently play Ponza (with maindeck Scavenging Ooze), Martyr Proc (which uses the graveyard too, so has sideboard Surgical Extraction), and Dredge (can confirm: maindeck RIP is brutal).

I run a U/B Control deck that runs 4x Leyline of the Void in the main. It completely throws people off and is worth running more than not. That being said I'd consider other forms of MB grave hate in U/W. You want your grave yard as much as the next and unlike Leyline Rest in Peace effects both sides. I'd probably try Relic of Progenitus instead.

There are various W/U lists that have been putting up results with mainboard rip (nearly all mtgo leagues) having them mainboard for full success seems to require leaving the graveyard matters style of play for control, so no snapcaster or logic knots or search (the newest list I've found on tcg player)). Atm though I'm mainboarding some Surgical Extraction, but that's more to let me map out decklists of my local meta, not to mention w/u control can grab free wins off of tron with a tron land destruction + extraction.

Rest in peace is a very very good card right now.

Compare it to Terminus. Terminus is an easy 3 or 4-of in UW control because it destroys creature decks. But it's basically useless against KCI or Storm or the mirror or Tron. But that doesn't matter because you need it to get enough percentage points against creature decks.

Terminus shows that dead cards are okay as long as they aren't dead too often and the upside is really good.

Rest in peace is similar because it wrecks graveyard decks, but it's useless against decks that don't utilize the graveyard.

The downside of RIP is higher because there are fewer graveyard decks than creature decks. Are your matchups against humans and spirits and Tron and burn good enough to afford a dead card against them? They all seem like pretty tight matchups to me.

Game 1 vs Tron gets especially bad because both Terminus and RIP are dead.

I run Rest in Peace in the sideboard of my Hollow One deck. The best graveyard hate is Rest in Peace or Leyline of the Void, accept no substitutes, since everything else is reactive or limited.
