Risk level of Tron

Modern forum

Going into a big modern tournament like a grand prix, the most important things are knowledge of the deck, experience, etc. Etc. That being said, the meta games ability to deal with a deck is also relevant, and can decide how fun some of your games are. In example if you play a deck like twin you can expect just about every deck to be packing plenty of hate given its prevalence. I very much enjoy playing tron, but the tron hate out there can be very effective, and some meta matchups can be hard. My question is how risky is it bringing tron to a major tournament? Will the average metagame be bad matchups, and will a lot of hate be ready? I know about the meta according to mtgtop8, and check it frequently, so saying to check it is not helpful. I want to know what actual players think.

Right now, Tron is a pretty decent deck choice. It's not widely enough seen to get too much hate from sideboards and such; mostly, you'll just have some good and some bad matchups. Since a huge portion of the field will likely be Jund, Junk, Burn, and Twin, you're looking at more or less a 50-50 on getting a good or bad matchup. By making more mainboard space for cards such as Wurmcoil Engine and Spellskite, you can mitigate your lack of relevant plays in bad matchups. It wouldn't be my first choice at the moment, but you should have moderate success playing GR Tron at any event.

From what I know, Splinter Twin and Burn are bad matchups, so I wouldn't pilot it into a field full of those decks.

Secondly, tron does very well against Jund, Abzan , or other BGx decks, so if those go up in the meta share, tron is an excellent choice.

Finally, I couldn't tell you how tron matches up against the various delver Grixis decks, but I'd imagine it has positive matchups.

That's essentially what I was saying, yeah, and most modern competitive events are a mix of the above 4-5 decks mentioned. So you might get lucky, and you might not.

I've been to a couple modern GPs in the recent past and frankly no matter what deck you play a good portion of winning is getting lucky with the match ups. You can't win a GP by meta gaming. It's nearly impossible unless it's standard. There's just to many people with to many different decks to meta game. The meta could be 50% twin, burn, junk/jund, and affinity and you'll play infect, ad nauseum, living end, storm, grixis control, elves, merfolk, faeries, and at least 1 home brew if not 2. And that's just day 1. On the other hand you could play bloom titan, tron, junk, affinity, jund, jund, burn, twin, collected chord. you can't meta game a big tournament like a GP. If you want to win, construct a solid, slightly broad, sideboard, don't misplay, and hope you get the right matchups.

As far as side boarding against tron, people will most likely side board for tron as well as all the other tier 1 decks. The question is how much they side board for it and if you play those people that side boarded a lot for it. Again, if you want to do well at a GP just play well, make a solid side board, and hope.

I almost forgot. GET FOOD AND DRINK. I'm not kidding. Keeping full and hydrated is probably the most important thing you can do. You can't make good plays if you can't think.

Hope this helps

I'd say Tron is a good choice in the current meta. Jund, Abzan, and Elves are all soft to it, and there are a bunch of other matchups that are 50/50 or close to it, with only Burn, Twin, and mayyyyybe Merfolk standing out as unfavorable. I think that if you're confident piloting the deck and you have all the pieces, you can and should go for it.

Tron is very good right know because not as many people will expect as they will Burn, Twin, Jund, etc. But just go play anyway, what do you have to lose anyway? If you want to pla Magic then play Magic.
