Should I play modern scapeshift of delver?

Modern forum

A little background, I have always been a control/combo player in every format I play, but with the printing of monastery swift spear, and the prowess mechanic I am considering delver.

I have been considering ur delver for a very long time, and the main reason I have hesitated is; A. The likely banning of Treasure cruise, and B. My love of control/combo.

I know this is a lot to ask for somebody who doesn't know me but none of my friends play modern.

The forum descriptions will guide you. Let them be your light in the dark times, when you're tapped out and have one card in hand.

fluffybunnypants please have a look at Epoch's second post. That was beautiful.

To the OP, Delver is a relatively cheap deck to make (unless you go balls to the wall and get Scalding Tarns and other expensive cards), and it's fairly consistent and doesn't die to Sowing Salt. It's easy to play, usually cheap to build, and relatively simple to put together.

Delver is everywhere and it's boring. Scapeshift is cool though.

Thank you and my lgs allows 10 modern proxies, and I already have my 2 snapcasters, and non-Scalding tarn fetchlands.

A. The likely banning of Treasure cruise.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. As ThisIsBullshit sort of mentioned, the deck is pretty cheap besides a few specific cards. But those cards gets used all throughout Modern, so even if banning happens you're still pretty well set for switching into another deck.

B. My love of control/combo.

Baring extreme metagame situations, it's generally better to stick with decks in your style. Unless a deck is far and away the best deck in the format, you're not necessarily going to do better outside your comfort zone. That said, sometimes it is important to expand your experiences. Playing "on the other side of the match-up" is a good way to get a feel for how you can play better overall.

As for the decks, UR Delver is what it is. It's arguably the best deck in the format right now since it's the best Treasure Cruise deck, which makes pretty much any attrition match-up laughable. Scapeshift is however very well positioned as more and more decks are hedging removal into the main to fight UR Delver. This means less cards that interact with what the deck is trying to do. Dig Through Time was also a huge boon for the deck since it always struggled as essentially a combo deck with only 4 copies of its combo.

Scapeshift all the way. Treasure Cruise is risky enough for banning that putting your money into a deck that can easily replace Dig Through Time with other cantrips is a better choice.

Also, Scapeshift stays interesting to play, where Delver plays very similar games which can get boring.

EridanWwins uh...no

Scapeshift is a well positioned and powerful deck in modern at the moment and is not under much risk of bannings yet it remains fun to play and very capable of winning.

I think I decided on Scapeshift thank you to everybody who helped me come to this decision.

GlistenerAgent That was sort of my counter-point, what cards are you actually investing in UR Delver in Modern?

It's not like you're getting locked into something like Daybreak Coronet or Mox Opal that only sees play in one deck. The vast majority of that deck's cost is wrapped up in the lands, which you can either trade off as needed since they will generally hold their value or just play another Steam Vents deck. It's practically a deck of all commons and uncommons, and the ones that do tip the scale a little more are Modern staples. Not saying that's necessarily a good reason to play the deck, but I don't think anyone that buys into UR Delver now is going to be in that bad spot if Treasure Cruise gets banned.

Delver is safe to use with Cruise because if it gets banned, you still have Dig Through Time. Scapeshift is a more fun deck, in my opinion, although it is more expensive.

You can also port a lot of Delver into legacy, but Scapeshift doesn't work there.
