Skred Red?

How do you think Skred Red is positioned in the current meta? I am curious because I need Blood Moon for my Storm deck anyways, so I was wondering if building Skred Red so I could use it in that deck too would be a good idea.

It's pretty awful against merfolk if they're playing Master of Waves and has a tough time versus Jund. That said it's not the worst deck and can easily clinch wins against other T2 lists. It just will struggle against a lot of T1 stuff, that's all.

Super fun to play though and not hugely expensive. One of my favourite decks to play when I just want to wind down.

Thanks ChiefBell. Yeah, I was wanting something other than Storm because

  1. My friends hate playing against Storm.

  2. I want another strategy.

I was thinking of adding some Dismember in my main(I will be running Coldsteel Heart in mine), which should help against Merfolk at least a little bit.

Also, this deck won't be playing any tier 1 decks(except for my one friend who plays Affinity). Most of my school is pretty casual.

Pyrite Spellbomb and Skullcrack. Spellbomb is colorless. Skullcrack stops damage being prevented.

Run Abbot of Keral Keep and Chandra, Pyromaster for card draw. Run Skred and Lightning Bolt. A single copy of Roast or something similar may be good. Perhaps also a single copy of Banefire.

Don't forget the 4 Boros Reckoner and also 1 or 2 Koth of the Hammer. Coldsteel Heart is good ramp and Stormbreath Dragon is the best finisher because he dodges Path to Exile

Alright, thanks! I have a list written up. I am sure I won't have to go against Merfolk, but I'll keep those cards in mind if I decide to go to a big tournament.

Skred does fine against Merfolk. The sweeps and spot removal are too much for the fish. At least in my experience with my build.

I would disagree with ChiefBell on one point: I personally feel koth is the heart and soul Of the deck, and if you can afford 4, you should run 4. His ultimate is just vile.

GoofyFoot In my build, I am running the full playset of Koth of the Hammer.

Run 4 Koth of the Hammer for sure. He's amazing in that deck. Abbot of Keral Keep will also be interesting to test, though make sure to sling another noncreature spell before you drop something like a Pyroclasm while he's on the board - no need to 2-for-1 yourself.

I disagree with Koth, having played Skred for a long, long time (guilty pleasure). Playing it as an aggro deck is pointless and Koth doesn't further your game plan as a control deck. Chandra does.

Essentially his +1 and middle abilities are pretty much intrinsic on you having cards in hand and wanting to swing in and win. This won't be the case for you against a variety of decks. You will run out of cards. Your hand will be stretched until you're holding nothing but lands. Chandra will help here. Koth won't. The absolute key problem skred has is a lack of card advantage. This makes Koth horrible because the whole way he operates is on the assumption that you have resources to cast.

I run 4-1 chandra-koth. 3-2 is doable. But I just don't think the deck wants him unless you want to pretend you're an aggro deck, which you're not because most other decks can aggro far better than you. What use is swinging in with a 4/4 when the opponent has a goyf on board and you desperately need a skred or roast?

I agree with ChiefBell. Koth is good, but he's just a finisher for us. Chandra, Pyromaster gives us card advantage, and deals with x/1s handily (BoB, Snapcaster, Clique, etc). Her ult is lack luster since the best we can do with it is get 3 bolts to their face.

Not to mention, Koth isn't in a good spot with all the removal people use these days. Path is fine, but the Terminates and Murderous Cuts hurt our mana. I myself have gone down from 4 of him to a 3 koth - 2 Chandra split in my list. Probably going to switch it around soon from what I've been seeing.

On a separate note, the new dual lands in BfZ make splashing Green or Black much less painful, and I will likely try putting in some Tarmogoyfs in place of a couple dragons and a copy of each planeswalker.

Interesting points here. Are you guys mainly using Koth of the Hammer for his +1? I mean, it's valuable, but I like opening with his -2 for ramp purposes. Essentially, I drop him and get a free planeswalker to go with my Stormbreath Dragon or sweeper. I can see where you're coming from, though, so I think I'll experiment with 4 Chandra, Pyromaster and 2 Koth of the Hammer, and see how it goes.

I love killing Steam Vents with Koth when playing Skred :)
