Soul Sisters question. New to modern.

I've heard of Soul Sisters before but I never really looked into it because it was a mono white deck which really didn't seem to be my thing at all. But, I've watched a few MTGO videos and deck techs for Soul Sisters and WOW. For a deck that I thought I wouldn't like at all I am really blown away by it. Now i'm looking to build one after seeing it in action and seeing it's price tag :)

First off let me say, this deck will be for COMPETITIVE KITCHEN TABLE. I won't be taking this to FNM or GP'S. But I will be playing against experienced modern players with very good decks but in a casual environment.

I'm not looking to win every single game or anything like that but I do want to have a fighting chance and pull out some wins. I'd like to know what this deck is weak against and what you can do to help it post sideboard.Does it have good sideboard options for various matchups?

I have seen lists with playsets of Squadron Hawk and then I have seen lists with Archangel of Thune. I'm going to assume Archeangel is the better card here but for budget reasons i'll probably be going down the Squadron Hawk route. Can anybody explain why you want Hawk over Archangel or vice versa.

What do you think of this deck as a first time Modern build? Is it worth spending the money on, and if I ever do take it out to the occasional FNM should I be expecting to do okay with it at least or will I just get slaughtered? Is it capable of winning an event?

Squad hawk is good against things like GB decks that run Liliana of the Veil. Its card advantage, essentially, and gives you something to do with your mana at all times.

I think that the deck is a fine first step into modern. It'll help you learn the nuances of the format, and provide a semi competitive way to get serious into it. I'd say it's definitely worth spending the $50 or so that you'd need.

If you were to take it to FNM, it all depends on what everyone else is playing. There's scenarios where it's awesome, and sometimes it just flops, but it's cheap enough that you don't really care if it flops. It is definitely capable of winning an event though.

When you have 2 "sisters" out, it can be pretty good to have the Hawks.

Soul sisters is a good deck. It will win you some games. Which decks are you going to face? Lifegain is good, but against some decks, it'll just be straight up bad.

I will be playing against Zoo, U/R Delver (maybe, if people can recover from TC being banned) Merfolk, and Junk midrange mostly.

So, which would you rather have, the hawk or the angel? If it's really worth having the angel I can trade for them or pick them up later on, it's not an urgent matter.

Oh yeah? I really don't follow modern too much so I wasn't aware that they even ran that card. I guess i'll wait a few weeks and see what happens with it before I make my decision. Hmm..... This leads to another question, with the new banned list. Does Soul Sisters get better or worse against the new metagame?

Hi kbarnhart! I've jumped intomodern recently, and the first deck I designed is a Soul Sisters. It is different and uses Norin the Warry to abuse lifegain. You can take a look at it. I think it is pretty competitive for the 80$ budget, and can still be easily improved for higher budget.

Take out expensive cards Cavern of Souls and the like and you are good to go!

The hawks are a good choice, I am not sure you need the angels except maybe as a 1x curve topper. Hawks replace themselves and gain you an obscene amount of life. Quite frankly though, things like Serra Ascendant and Ranger of Eos are must-plays and there are no budget alternatives to them...

Most ppl run Squadron Hawk because they run a 3 of or a playset of Martyr of Sands. Play 1 Hawk, fetch the rest, crack Martyr, and since you have more white stuff in hand now more life. Also since the deck is mono-white, Nykthos and you have a bunch of sisters on board, Hawk, Hawk, Hawk, & life, life, life. I would also like to suggest Shrine of Loyal Legions. I love it in sisters,

T1: Sister

T2: Shrine

And then just let it build up from there. Wait long enough, then crack it, swarm the board and gain MASSIVE life. Also it's a great way to get back from a board wipe.

Board wipe

Play sister next turn

Crack Shrine

Gain life & refill your board

Still just a thing I use in my opinion. Good luck with the deck btw!
