If you ever wonder about the legality of a card, Gatherer is the best place to check. For instance, the strip mine page shows all the printings the card has had. It also shows all of the formats where it is legal.

It's worth noting though, just because Gatherer doesn't explicitly say a card is banned in a particular format doesn't mean the card is legal in the format. For example, Dark Ritual can't be played in Modern becuase it is from a pre-Modern allowed set, however is not technically banned. Whereas the Birthing Pod page explicitly states that it is banned in Modern.

So as a general rule, unless a card specifically lists as "Legal" (or restricted) for a particular format, assume that you can't play it. But Gatherer should be your first port of call for checking the legalities of Wizards of the Coast sanctioned formats.

One last thing worth mentioning about the Zendikar Expeditions specifically (this includes the expedition Strip Mine), On top of the normal legalities of the expeditions, they are also legal in limited formats (sealed, draft, etc).

I agree that gatherer is usually the best place for legalities except for commander they don't update their commander legalities

Actually, the most recent banning in Commander, Prophet of Kruphix, is listed on Gatherer as 'banned'. - As such, I would assume they do update the Commander legality list.

Yawgmoth's Bargain I think is the card that I know of but in general just look at the commander website

Huh they actually changed it, but still for commander look at the commander site it's their responsibility to keep up the ban list and they do a good job

logansullivan: Absolutely. For any format run by a third party (commander, duel commander, Australian highlander, etc) where WotC isn't it charge of the ban list, then you should consult the third party's website/distribution method first.

For commander however, WotC are usually pretty good about updating their banlist as they have kind of "semi adopted" it as a format. They are usually a few days behind but on the whole are pretty good.

So I just don't trust gatherer for any third party formats
