Time for another Tappedout modern tournament!
Sign-ups are now closed. The details below no longer apply:
- Sign-ups will run for 5 days - they will close at midnight Wednesday night, February 18, Eastern Time Standard (which is the time zone Tappedout uses for deckcycling and comment post times).
- The sign-ups are short because we are aiming to only have 16 players to minimize the amount of players that won't play their games. If enough players sign up, this will be expanded to 32 players.
- Because so many people did not play their games in the last tournaments, you HAVE TO BE AN ACTIVE USER TO JOIN. The general guideline for being an 'active user' is if you're in the top 100 for Tappedout rank, but exceptions can be made if there is strong evidence that you will play your games. We reserve the right to prevent any user from signing up. This is simply to ensure the games are actually played, which is better for all of us.
- To sign up, please leave a comment with your time zone. Then fill out this survey with your username and decklist. Remember, you cannot change your decklist after play starts, so it is advised that you make a new deck page only for your tournament deck.
Tournament structure is as follows
- We are hoping to have 16 players. In the event that enough players sign up, we may increase it to a 32 player tournament.
- The 17 players will be separated into 4 pods of 4 or 5 players each. In each pod the players will play a round robin.
- There will be a top 8 tournament. The top 2 players in each pod will advance.
- The details of the top 8 have not been determined yet, but it will likely be a single elimination bracket.
- All matchups will be played out in a match: best out of 3 games.
- Games can be played on any platform agreeable to both players. Recommended platforms are Untap.in, Cockatrice, Xmage, and MTGO.
- The format for the tournament is Modern and will be using the OGW ban list. The tournament banlist will not change even if there is a banlist change midway through the tournament.
- This tournament is meant to be a competitive modern tournament. However, you may play a brewed deck, provided that it is intended to be a competitive deck. An example of a competitive brew: Rocket Science. And an example of a non-competitive brew: The Thief Lord.
- After sign-ups, players will be broken up into pods based on their time zone. I will create a page for each pod and link all of the users in each pod with a comment on your wall, tag you in a comment on the pod page itself, and leave a link to each pod on the bottom of this page.
- You must post your game results onto the Tappedout Tournament Results page. When you post there, to make things easier for me, tag your opponent, state how many games each player won, and which pod you are in.
- Prizes have not been determined yet. They will likely be bragging rights. They shall be determined at the same time as the rest of the top 8 structure.
- When determining who advances to the top 8, ties of records between players in the pods will be broken in the following manner: 1. The player with fewer game losses is ranked higher. 2. The player that won the match between these two players advances. 3. If the prior methods do not break the tie, the players will play another match to determine the higher rank.
Tournament timeline is as follows
- Sign-ups will run until the night of Wednesday, February 18, unless we max out on users before then.
- Play will begin as soon as the brackets are made.
- Play ends at midnight on Sunday, March 6th. The play time is very short to keep people engaged. IF YOU CAN'T PLAY YOUR GAMES WITHIN 2 WEEKS, DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER SIGNING UP.
- After the first round of play in pods, the top 8 will begin. The details of the top 8 are still being determined, and are open to suggestions.
Players that have signed up so far, their time zone, and whether they have filled out the survey. Names with a * before them have NOT filled out the survey. Leave a comment if there is incorrect information in this portion.

Special thanks to a lot of users who assisted in making this happen. I can't even pretend to have the original idea of the league; I'm just the person that has the time to hopefully keep it organized. In particular, I would like to thank everyone who organized the previous tappedout leagues and GlistenerAgent since it was his idea to do this tournament.
If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask them in the comments. Thanks!

would you guys hate me if i played lantern control? :P

ToolmasterOfBrainerd says... #4
ryanjoha probably. I did reserve the right to prevent any user from participating..... just kidding, but seriously unless you actually play lantern control regularly and can pilot it in a reasonable amount of time, rethink your deck choice. Do not play it only to piss people off cuz then we'll all hate you. Although I personally would prefer you to play Lantern Control over, say, Eldrazi.
You do have a pretty low rank (187) so I'm going to need some indication that you'll show up to play. Did you participate in any of the previous leagues? Because if you did and played a reasonable percentage of your games, then you can probably participate. If you did not participate in any of the older leagues, then I'd like to set up a game on untap.in with you just so you can prove that you can show up. It's not that I think you'll blow off the league; it's just that I want to be absolutely certain every participant will play their games.

I don't actually play lantern irl, but i am very fascinated with the deck, it's play style and the lines of play it can take. I probably wouldn't play this deck in this kind of tournament, since piloting LC on untap is a bitch. I played in a shelf tournament held by a few guys. I played all the games in a timely manor, until the tournament fell apart/took a pause bc other ppl didn't play their games. I would like to organize a game on untap if you want. I'm Central time, and today i am free aside from 1:30-2, and 5:45-10ish. might be a bit earlier though. I have the tappedout app on my phone, so when someone mentions me in a comment, i would get that notification to my phone.

ToolmasterOfBrainerd says... #6
ryanjoha From what you describe, it sounds like you'll play your games, so setting something up on untap.in won't be necessary. If LC is something you really enjoy, then I guess you can play it. I'll need a decklist, but you have some time on that. Thanks!

GlistenerAgent says... #7
We changed it so that decklists will be submitted after signups are done. We don't want people to change their deck choice based on what has already been registered.

ToolmasterOfBrainerd I can vouch for ryanjoha. He followed up on that Shelf Tourney util the end, even after it fell apart (like he said, to people not play). Ryan is a cool guy.
As for me, I would like to sign up. Timezone is Pacific Standard Time. My T/O rank at this time is 50. That works, I assume?

Thank guys! TheFoilAjani, ryanjoha, DrFunk27, and GlistenerAgent, you're all added!
Ryan, sinced ajani vouched for you, that's more than good enough for me.

I'll sign up, Central Time Zone.
Good luck to the rest of you and have fun!

kameenook your rank is low, but I've seen you around quite a bit. I'll add you now, but did you participate in any of the previous leagues? Thanks!

Signing in, my time zone is.....uh....well I guess technically right now it's mountain...but I'm in Phoenix, so we don't do the daylight savings time thing. I'm going to be piloting my baby, I'm sure most of you already know what it is lol

C4rnif3X sounds good. I signed you up. There isn't a way to submit decklists yet anyway, so don't worry. Decklists will be collected once sign-ups close.

By the way, untap.in is all I got at the moment to play.

CanadianShinobi says... #24
Well, sure I suppose I'll sign up barring some unnatural tragedy. I suppose you'll need a deck list before sign ups close on the 18th ToolmasterOfBrainerd?
Edit: Eastern Standard Time for me.

ToolmasterOfBrainerd says... #25
CanadianShinobi glad to hear you can play. Yep, I just need a decklist before the 18th because that's when I'm making the pods and publishing the decklists.
February 13, 2016 4 p.m.
I'd like to play. I haven't played in any before but I play on untap daily and I am on this site daily as well. I'm in California.

ToolmasterOfBrainerd says... #27
Lifa I went ahead and signed you up. If you're on untap.in daily, I'd say you'll likely show up. Don't forget to do the decklist survey before sign-ups close.
February 13, 2016 4:25 p.m.
ToolmasterOfBrainerd says... #28
Sure. I got your response, so you're all good.

JaceArveduin you expressed interest a few months ago when we were first discussing the idea. Since you still have an interest in doing it, that shows some dedication, so I'd be more than happy to include you. Be sure to fill out the survey with a decklist before play starts.

Hmm, do I play Naya Chord or Ayli Processor? Who knows!

Something something competitive decks something something
February 13, 2016 7:03 p.m.
ToolmasterOfBrainerd says... #33
Well, Ayli Processor is competitive as long as you're playing against eldrazi......
February 13, 2016 7:08 p.m.
I submitted the wrong deck. lol I'm filling out another Survey.
ToolmasterOfBrainerd Any chance I can send you my list?
February 13, 2016 7:13 p.m. Edited.
GlistenerAgent says... #36
Make sure that you make a separate page for your submitted deck, so that we can be sure you don't change it over the course of the league.
February 13, 2016 7:24 p.m.
ToolmasterOfBrainerd says... #37
I've left multiple notes about that, but yeah, what Glistener said. In particular, Sk0oMa and TheAlexGnan, you both listed your normal deck page. I'd just feel better about it if you both just hit the 'copy deck' button and submit that version instead. I've set the survey so you can edit your results even after you submit the survey, so you both can go back in change it, if you so please.
Thanks guys! Looks like we're getting a great turnout for the tournament. 14 people signed up at the time of this writing, which is awesome.
February 13, 2016 7:28 p.m.
I think i'm going to run my hyperfriend deck, see how it does.. It's just for fun anyway. I'm going to be tweaking it and will submit sometime soon
February 13, 2016 7:35 p.m.
TheFoilAjani says... #39
GlistenerAgent something something ..you may play a brewed deck, provided that it is intended to be a competitive deck something something.
Regardless, I have filled out the survey.
February 13, 2016 7:41 p.m.
GlistenerAgent says... #40
That's a very subjective rule. I think it means "play whatever you want". Have fun! :)
February 13, 2016 7:43 p.m.
It is subjective haha. If everyone played Eldrazi, Tron, and Affinity that'd be boring. We already know those decks are good. It's good especially now to test different things to see what works and what doesn't.

GlistenerAgent Ah, cool. I thought you were being a dick.
February 13, 2016 7:52 p.m.
ToolmasterOfBrainerd Any chance those that screwed up listing our deck can re-submit?
February 13, 2016 7:54 p.m.
VampireArmy says... #45
I wasn't going to but G-Agent convinced me. I'll do it. East coast us time.
February 13, 2016 9:03 p.m.
ToolmasterOfBrainerd says... #46
DrFunk27, Sk0oMa I said I changed the survey so you could edit responses and then never did it. Now I changed it so you should be able to go back and fix it.
EDIT: VampireArmy awesome I'm glad you can join us!
February 13, 2016 9:04 p.m. Edited.
ToolmasterOfBrainerd says... #47
Okay that rule is quite subjective, but making an objective rule about what decks you can submit would be pretty impossible and very confusing. My point was that you should definitely play to win, but you don't have to play a deck that is a solved archetype with no personal flavor. The reason for the latter portion of that is because Tappedout exists, in my opinion, primarily to build, test, and share your decks and ideas about the game. In a way, tappedout is probably the best place for brewing pretty much anywhere. Not incorporating that into a tournament being hosted on tappedout would feel wrong to me. How competitive you want your deck to be is up to you, but if you don't build a deck that's designed to win, then be fine with going 0-3 drop.
Regardless, we're getting down a road we're likely better of not following. I didn't mean it to be 'play whatever you want' because I don't want people to sign up with old standard decks that have rotated out, but my intentions can't change the fact that that's how it could be interpreted.
