Tappedout Modern Tournament

Time for another Tappedout modern tournament!

Sign-ups are now closed. The details below no longer apply:

  • Sign-ups will run for 5 days - they will close at midnight Wednesday night, February 18, Eastern Time Standard (which is the time zone Tappedout uses for deckcycling and comment post times).
  • The sign-ups are short because we are aiming to only have 16 players to minimize the amount of players that won't play their games. If enough players sign up, this will be expanded to 32 players.
  • Because so many people did not play their games in the last tournaments, you HAVE TO BE AN ACTIVE USER TO JOIN. The general guideline for being an 'active user' is if you're in the top 100 for Tappedout rank, but exceptions can be made if there is strong evidence that you will play your games. We reserve the right to prevent any user from signing up. This is simply to ensure the games are actually played, which is better for all of us.
  • To sign up, please leave a comment with your time zone. Then fill out this survey with your username and decklist. Remember, you cannot change your decklist after play starts, so it is advised that you make a new deck page only for your tournament deck.

Tournament structure is as follows

  • We are hoping to have 16 players. In the event that enough players sign up, we may increase it to a 32 player tournament.
  • The 17 players will be separated into 4 pods of 4 or 5 players each. In each pod the players will play a round robin.
  • There will be a top 8 tournament. The top 2 players in each pod will advance.
  • The details of the top 8 have not been determined yet, but it will likely be a single elimination bracket.
  • All matchups will be played out in a match: best out of 3 games.
  • Games can be played on any platform agreeable to both players. Recommended platforms are Untap.in, Cockatrice, Xmage, and MTGO.
  • The format for the tournament is Modern and will be using the OGW ban list. The tournament banlist will not change even if there is a banlist change midway through the tournament.
  • This tournament is meant to be a competitive modern tournament. However, you may play a brewed deck, provided that it is intended to be a competitive deck. An example of a competitive brew: Rocket Science. And an example of a non-competitive brew: The Thief Lord.
  • After sign-ups, players will be broken up into pods based on their time zone. I will create a page for each pod and link all of the users in each pod with a comment on your wall, tag you in a comment on the pod page itself, and leave a link to each pod on the bottom of this page.
  • You must post your game results onto the Tappedout Tournament Results page. When you post there, to make things easier for me, tag your opponent, state how many games each player won, and which pod you are in.
  • Prizes have not been determined yet. They will likely be bragging rights. They shall be determined at the same time as the rest of the top 8 structure.
  • When determining who advances to the top 8, ties of records between players in the pods will be broken in the following manner: 1. The player with fewer game losses is ranked higher. 2. The player that won the match between these two players advances. 3. If the prior methods do not break the tie, the players will play another match to determine the higher rank.

Tournament timeline is as follows

  • Sign-ups will run until the night of Wednesday, February 18, unless we max out on users before then.
  • Play will begin as soon as the brackets are made.
  • Play ends at midnight on Sunday, March 6th. The play time is very short to keep people engaged. IF YOU CAN'T PLAY YOUR GAMES WITHIN 2 WEEKS, DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER SIGNING UP.
  • After the first round of play in pods, the top 8 will begin. The details of the top 8 are still being determined, and are open to suggestions.

Players that have signed up so far, their time zone, and whether they have filled out the survey. Names with a * before them have NOT filled out the survey. Leave a comment if there is incorrect information in this portion.

Special thanks to a lot of users who assisted in making this happen. I can't even pretend to have the original idea of the league; I'm just the person that has the time to hopefully keep it organized. In particular, I would like to thank everyone who organized the previous tappedout leagues and GlistenerAgent since it was his idea to do this tournament.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask them in the comments. Thanks!

I did the survey!

Gnarlicide, eastern time zone. I play on cockatrice.

Count me in

xzzane does make 16, but since we're only on day 2 of 5 for sign ups, we can try for 32 players.

I'll add a separate section of players 17-32 and if we fill it, then we'll play 32, but otherwise we just have to do first come first serve since it's the most fair way to cut players. Sorry guys. But tell your friends to come join and we'll try to get to 32!

Alternatively, we could do any number of pods, take the top player from each pod, then do wildcards to determine the rest of the top 8. So for example, if we get 24 players (6 pods), we take the top player from each pod and then determine the last 2 spots of the top 8 based on record. This method would require additional matches because there will be a lot of ties, but would also allow more people to play.

Another option still is we do 4 pods, but could have 5 or 6 people per pod, then do top 2 players in each pod. If we get to 32 players, we'll expand to 8 pods, but for anything less, we just have 4 pods with anything from 4 to 7 players. This would mean that we don't have additional matches to determine who gets the wildcard, but we also have more rounds of pod play, which could become difficult to finish in 2 weeks.

I filled out the survey. I can only play on untap by the way.

February 14, 2016 6:39 p.m.

For those of you who only use UnTap, you should know how easy it is to download and learn to use Cockatrice. It's a much cleaner UI and easier to ensure that both players are doing what they want to do and know exactly what's going on. I've found UnTap's interface to lend itself to misunderstanding.

My problem with Cockatrice is that I'm on a school computer where I can't download things like Cockatrice. It's as stupid as it sounds. I suppose I could download it then delete it every time I want to play, but that seems extremely inefficient. Untap is bad, but it's in-browser which makes it kinda my only option.

I do have another computer at my house, but it is so incredibly slow that I don't even want to attempt to deal with the lag.

i'm gonna try downloading cockatrice right now :)

Still testing my deck will have it in tomorrow or definitely by the next day.

February 15, 2016 12:58 a.m.

Take your time on testing. I don't need the decklists until I make pods, but it is convenient to have them sooner rather than later just so I know that I won't have to track people down to receive them. You can actually submit the survey and keep editing your deck as long as the page link doesn't change; the deadline for changing your decklist isn't until sign-ups close. Actually, even if the page link changes, I have the survey set up so that you can change your answers after you fill it out as well.

Don't forget to vote on the tournament pod structure if it matters to you. No obligation to fill that one out if you're indifferent to it.

Forgot to add, I only play on Untap.in.

I submitted my deck, but I have a little problem. I am starting a new job in a week that's going to take a lot of my time up, with an hour and a half commute each way.. I just found out Monday as I got a call from my union hall. I'll only be able to play weekdays from the hours of 7pm-11pm Eastern Time, but free on the weekends. If that's not a problem, than go ahead and submit my deck and me.. If not than let me know if you want to find someone else with more time. Thank you!

February 16, 2016 6:36 p.m. Edited.

C4rnif3X Thanks for letting me know. If you're available on weekends and evenings, then as far as I'm concerned, that works just fine since that's when most people should be available. I'll be sure to not put you in a bracket with the Europeans since that timing will be difficult.

While I'm commenting, I'll make just a general announcement to everyone. Sign-ups close tomorrow at midnight Tappedout (eastern) time. Be sure your decklist is submitted by then. Also, we currently have 18 people, and 20 would be much more convenient. So, please feel free to reach out to a few more people so we can get 2 more and do pods of 5. Thanks again to everyone for participating.

I still need your decklists by tonight. Just a reminder. The survey can be found here.

Also, this is the last night to have an opinion on the strawpoll survey about the tournament format.

Ideally, we'd get 2 more sign-ups tonight. If you have someone in mind who may have not seen this page yet, go tell them to sign up. Thanks!

Where do i submit?

February 17, 2016 6:06 p.m.

I will be gone the rest of the night, so everyone who has not filled out the decklist survey, please do so. If we get any last-minute people who want to play, that'd be great! Just know that if you comment here, I won't get back to you until tomorrow, but we'll still let you play. Thanks!

Will have my decklist in by midnight. You are not prepared.

Alrighty team, lists are to be all submitted by now. Let the brackets be announced in the morning because Toolmater is tired!

Hopefully it's not too late to say this, but I'd prefer to not be in a pod with any euro players as my availability may not match up well with the time differences...

February 18, 2016 1:19 a.m.

Sk0oMa no problem. You're in mountain time, so I wasn't planning on it anyway.

So do we have pods ready?

February 18, 2016 10:45 a.m.

Not yet, but that reminds me.

Announcement time

Okay, so sign-ups are closed. Thank you to everyone who signed up. We had 17 decklists submitted by the deadline, so we will be doing 4 pods, of which 3 of them will have 4 players, and one will have 5.

I shall be making a deck page for each pod. On each deck page I will list the players and decklists in that pod. There you can all set up games and discuss whatever. I will tag everyone in a comment here about what pod you're in as well as a link to your pod. I will also tag everyone in a given pod on their pod's deck page. If I'm feeling motivated, I'll post on your wall as well. Basically, it should be pretty easy to find your deck page.

I will also create a deck folder which will have each of the pod pages and the Tappedout Tournament Results.

Tournament play may begin as soon as I publish the pods, which will be Friday night at the absolute latest. Tournament play ends on Sunday, March 6th at midnight, eastern time.

Thanks again for participating!

February 18, 2016 9:52 p.m.

Well, I've almost set them up. The pages exist, but they're private still because they aren't finished yet. I'm close to done. I'll have them done by tonight I think. Tomorrow morning at the absolutely positively latest.
