That Modern Speculation: For FRF
Modern forum

Since modern is my game and I know there are quite a few users who play modern exclusively, I'd like to separate the modern discussion and speculation of the FRF spoilers from Epoch's general FRF spoiler discussion.
Now we can focus on modern specifically without standard getting in the way.

I really don't like Soulflayer in Pod. If you're going to play a six-drop, it had better be Sun Titan because that is by far the best option available to you. Multiple six-drops gets too clunky, and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite is fine but not at all necessary.
Valorous Stance is going to be tried in small numbers in aggressive decks, but in the end I think it is more of a Standard card than a Modern card.

As for the potential for abilities on Soulflayer, that's not amazing either. You have access to flying (several guys including Restoration Angel, Linvala, Keeper of Silence and Reveillark), trample (Siege Rhino), and sometimes first strike (Nekrataal). Podding away your Rhinos is never what you really want to be doing in the first place, and Shriekmaw is in many places much better than Nekrataal. Overall, very lackluster for a six-drop to Pod for, and not too exciting as a 2 mana 4/4 either.

It can still be played much earlier in the game than Sun Titan, and then promptly sac'd the turn it came out. That's the main reason I have for it as it could then get a 7 drop much earlier than normal that could win you the game by just being there.

Valorous Stance does seem more like a fringe sideboard card more than anything.

@Femme_Fatale That's a reason to play it, but in the end I still don't think it will be good enough. It's excellent when you have a Pod in play, and very mediocre when you don't. Oftentimes you will just make a 4/4, and I think for the midrange plan that's not close to playable.

When I say "excellent", I mean it lets you get Elesh Norn, which is not a card I'd advise playing in Pod decks unless you expect a hell of a lot of Ascendancy, Delver and the mirror.

I'm 100% with GlistenerAgent here. The potential is nice, but the investment required is quite heavy and not necessary.

Pod likes to pod up into their 6 drops, Soulflayer only inherits the abilities if he delves away creatures that have those abilities meaning that they have to cast him from hand. That's not ideal.

I actually don't have six drop in my pod list, however, my list does differ slightly than other, more conventional lists. ...
And the only use I see for flayer is to get to that seven drop.

Aside from Ugin? A resounding "meh", so far. However, the legendary dragons do look promising.

Soulflayer reminds me of Necrotic Ooze a not played card.

I think the RB dragon is a massive bomb in limited, could see some standard and EDH play but I am not sure Kolghan (or whatever his name is) will make any impact on the eternal formats @slovakattack

I really like Crux of Fate for a couple modern decks (or as a budget Damnation) but all the other spoiled cards are only really limited and possibly standard playable.

awesomeguy37: Khagen himself (herself?) Looks Meh, but he/she is part of a cycle of Legendary Dragons. Depending on what those abilities are, we may see one of them in Modern. But then, that's just speculation :P

The first card I want to take a look at is Soulflayer.
My first thought of use would be pod, because of all the sac'ing it does. My second thought would be of the fact that, even as a 4/4 with a lot of abilities, it is still a bit inconsistent to rely on. My third thought, well, it can be sac'd too!
At 6 cmc, this thing can get instant game changers really early in the game. Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite anyone?
