Tron. This is about Tron. I realise that whenever the Mono-U vs RG tron (because I am just to tired to add azorious gifts) debate comes up most people, such as my self roll their eyes. I'm going to ask for your patience as I am unfortunately needing to bring this up. I am wanting to make a tron deck and the it isn't a question of budget. While most say that RG green tron is better, and it is actually played more, I have seen some interesting arguments for U. While RG is very fast, can have an explosive first game and counters hyper aggro way better, it is completely proactive. It doesn't care about what the opponent is doing, which often makes it susceptible to combo decks, like the much played Splinter Twin. Mono U on the other hand, is slower and more control-y. I feel that it is better in most categories than RG due to the counterspells for protection. The only faults I see are really it vs RDW, Affinity, Zoo and such. So I was wondering, could i have the best of both worlds and make Mono U, and then splash red for Pyroclasm or Anger of the Gods like RG for the aggro match-ups? Seems legit to me. Would like some feedback, and please, be nice. Thanks.:)

Red green is better. But you're idea is interesting... it seems to work on paper. You'll have to test it out!

The "better" version of it depends on what match-ups you have, but in RG Tron VS U-Tron, RG Tron always wins. Because there's no answer for Spaghettis. U-Tron however has the advantage of being able to cast creatures without the tron lands, so I would say it's more solid in the current meta.

Izzet tron? Certainly a possibility.

Worth noting by the way that the addition of blue for counterspells doesn't save you from Twin, because they pack their own!

It does get access to Rending Volley in the SB, though. That's pretty cool.

I think you may be underestimating how good green is in Tron, though. It's filtering with Ancient Stirrings is mad.

FAMOUSWATERMELON In a U vs RG match, I've outraced RG often. I have answers in the form of permission. And he has no answers save Karn to my wurmcoils. So yeah. A lot of the luck factor weighs in on this matchup, but U can outrace RG if you play smartly.

True. But the real problem is Emrakul, because there's no way to get rid of him. Except for Aether Spellbomb, and that's for one turn. Which they get back from casting him. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it's definitely one of the harder match-ups.

How much of the meta is RG tron, anyway?

Unsure. 1 deck in 30? Where Abzan is one deck in 20?

May 12, 2015 4:56 p.m.

I would say roughly 3% of the meta. Abzan would be more around 20%.

FAMOUSWATERMELON I don't disagree on that point. Once he hits the board it's GG. If you fail to outrace emrakul well... That's why they call it inevitability.

I like dimir tron with Time Sieve + Thopter Assembly.

klone13 You know, I'm a slight bit surprised that Time Sieve isn't used in some combo deck. It's two mana for a turn. Not sure what else you can ask for.

Izzet Tron was a thing at the start of the modern format. It was typical mono blue Tron which splashed red mainly for Through the Breach and Pyroclasm. It has clearly fallen from grace, but the cards are still there. Give it a shot.

One thing that GR Tron has over an Ux manabase is Grove of the Burnwillows, Chromatic Sphere & Chromatic Star. A splash in U Tron is going to be more challenging, but definitely manageable, you'll just have to figure it out.

I've played several versions of Tron over the years, and seen favorabe/harsh metas come and go. If you want to pick a netdeck, pick one you like. Mono-U feels a lot like tempo/control as you set up tron or build into Wurmcoil Engine. The toolbox effect with all the possible tutors lets you MB a lot of cool tech, too. RG is more straight control after Tron is online, and definitely more reliable in setting it up and recovering from disruption.

The main point to take away from all the variations is that Tron itself is solid. I've seen some interesting builds, GB, GU, UW, etc. do quite well. It's more about figuring out what makes Tron tick, and then you're free to build whatever you want. There's no reason you can't make UR Tron awesome, but be careful trying to make U Tron more like RG. A good UR Tron will most likely be it's own animal, so don't get locked down in you're thinking while you brew. Good luck!

jandrobard - That one was a bit more recent, came out of Japan, I think. I'll see if I can dig it up, and I'll post it here if I can find it.
