The Dragons descend on Modern

So I've been wondering about the new combo that's come up. Namely Descent of the Dragons + Dragon Tempest . It really makes me think of Scapeshift, because it basically does the same thing, and will likely deal more damage. And you get 4/4 dragons with haste. Good game.

Anyways, does this combo have any place in modern? It's obviously more costly then the Scapeshift combo and requires more stuff, but I was thinking about this in a control shell with perhaps some mana dorks or whatever, maybe Temur. Could this be something like tier 2 ?

Actually, now that I think about it, it could maybe be midrange-ish with Stormbreath Dragon or whatever.

How does this do the same thing as Scapeshift? For Scapeshift combo to work you only need ceiling(x/3) lands and Scapeshift in your hand where x is your opponent's life total.

This requires a bunch of creatures in play and both of those cards in your hand and ridiculous amounts of mana.

omnipotato I mean that in the sense that you have to sacrifice to get stuff that deals damage while entering the battlefield.

Battlefield Thaumaturge would help make decent cost less. And then u can use tokens to kill on turn 4. Cause u play BT on to with the reduced decent cause it costs 2 if u target it and 3 tokens. I've been trying to think of a way to break this combo and make it consistent. that's my 2 cents

The issue with this idea is that for Scapeshift, it's 'combo' is extremely easily protected. Land destruction is not ubiquitous, and it's pretty safe to assume that your opponent will not simply nuke your lands out of existence.

Tokens, however, are not so easily protected. I could see this being a finisher on a mardu tokens deck, but other than that...

I knows like a mono red deck for this with Krenko's Command, Dragon Fodder, Hordeling Outburst and looting spells to dig to your win con. But I may be a little insane to think it works.

It could be a wincon for Skred lists!

Cast it on 3 creatures and you get 21 damage.

3 4/4 fliers on the field with haste (12 power attack), each dealing 3 damage ETB (9 damage)

Could be interesting... But the main problem is 1. the necessity to have creatures in play for it to work and 2. Dragon Tempest does nothing on it's own and is vulnerable to all sorts of removal.

could be a tricky but fun modern deck to build. If you work off a naya, jund, or temur build using red and your third non green color for control while using green for ramp and fodder to bring in your dragon tokens. Maybe it could work in a variant of a triple color Genesis Wave shell with Eternal Witness being used to bring back the Descent of Dragons from a Genesis Wave. with red burn and that third control color you might be able to pull off this combo in modern as a tier 3 rouge deck maybe tier 2 depending on the meta game at your local store. For the most part though I see decent of dragons and dragon tempest as being more of a standard combo than a modern combo though. It feels a little slow but maybe with the right protection or an alternative win con on top of that combo it could work.
