The Modern Blues

Modern forum

I've come to a point that I never thought I would reach, I'm bored of Blue. I mean I still love what Blue is and does within the game, but I'm just tired of playing Control and/or Control variants. I wouldn't mind using Black with something, maybe green? I don't have to funds for Tarmogoyf though :

Anyway, does anyone have some suggestions on where to go from here? Like I said, I would prefer going with Black because I have 2x Liliana of the Veil and a set of Bob.

Well that's about as good a star as any for playing black in modern (as I understand it anyway. I don't actually play modern).

But those cards are very popular in modern.

What style of play do you like? (Aside from control obviously)

@ Bellock86Honestly, anything that isn't aggro is what I can generally play. Aggro just doesn't satisfy me. One of the reasons I play Control is because I love frustrating my opponents. Some people might find that boring, but I do like the feeling of being in control of the game. So I suppose something like Rock would be an ideal choice, because a straight up discard deck also sound boring as hell to me.

I like control as well but I like a different form of control. Now I want to reiterate that I am not super familiar with modern "archetypes" and only have limited experience with it in general so I may not be the best to give advice.

When I say a differnt form of control I mean I do it backwards. Rather than use counterspells and what not to control what happens, I manipulate my opponents into doing what I want via the cards I play.

The best example I can give for what I call "unorthodox control" is my Junk EDH deck. Is there some combination of cards in modern that pop into your head that would allow you to still play control but like my example?

play 8rack. it's control with all the beauty of aggro. warning: you will lose friends playing it. I have a deck if you want to look at an example That Lovin' Feeling. 8rack is the archetype because of The Rack and Shrieking Affliction , and you can find plently of decks like it. you can even run Goyf in it if you like....

@ GoofyFoot

  1. I explicitly stated I do not have the funds to run Tarmogoyf

  2. I also stated in one of my posts I did not want a pure discard deck, which is pretty much the sum of 8 Rack.

@ Bellock86

I haven't the slightest idea what you mean by "unorthodox control" however, the suggestion of Junk Colours as gotten me thinking so perhaps that is the direction to go. Not Birthing Pod , it's not a deck I can safely run. But perhaps something more of a Junk Midrange?

I was just suggesting goyf because you mentioned it, and I didn't see the comment, sorry. It's just realistically the ideal deck for lilianas and bobs because you have low cost cards and you'll already be discarding with liliana.

Why not try something like Merfolk? I know you said no blue, but it's an aggro deck that offers a lot of control in it. you could also do Fairies. If your looking for a perfect example of "Unorthodox Control" is Doran, the Siege Tower . You can find plenty of examples of it. It provides the control colors, and even though it's slightly janky, it does really good if built competitively.

Junk HateBears. Lol

Aven Mindcensor , Gaddock Teeg , Voice of Resurgence , etc. can be key pieces along with Bob and Lily.

@CanadianSamurai ~ junk hatebears would be a good example of unorthodox control. Not a counter spell to be seen but because of the cards you're using and how you put them together it gives you control over certain aspects of the game, thus forcing your opponent to either play around them or just get rid of them. Forcing their decisions so to speak. Not sure if there is a different name for that.nive always just called it unorthodox control.

Sounds like you have a decent setup for 8 Rack and that's a damn fun deck to play.

@fluffybunnypants ~ I'm not familiar with modern but if 8 rack is a discard deck he stated he didn't wanna do that cuz it seamed boring.

March 14, 2014 9:32 a.m.

I totally missed that.

All good @fluffybunnypants. You and the others that have been in here seem way more well versed in modern so you are probably a much better source of assistance than me

March 14, 2014 9:44 a.m.

Hm... Junk Hatebears eh? I might consider that. I was brewing last night (couldn't sleep) and I came up with something that might be mildly feasible if given some good advice. It's on my profile (called Canadian Junk). I'd link it but I think that's against the forum rules, so I'll post the deck in the Deck Help for anyone who want to have a looksee

Jund. That's what you seem like. You don't HAVE to run 'goyfs in it. It's a very disruptive kind of deck and plays things ahead of curve. Excels at making opponents rage. I'd talk to gnarlicide about it, honestly. (You're welcome for the tag! xD)

March 15, 2014 3:30 a.m.

@ BLEATH I seriously did consider Jund, though I had no idea what to use for Goyf.

you can use Scavenging Ooze in Goyfs place. Sure he's not 100% ideal but he's good stuff. He can also even trump a goyf given a few mana by removing everything keeping the goyf strong

March 15, 2014 8:08 p.m.

@ VampireArmy that might be a good idea. I probably wouldn't run 4x Liliana of the Veil but I would definitely try for 3. I've seen some versions even run Chandra, Pyromaster . Might be something else to consider too. Thanks for the tip.
