The most viable oppression cards in modern
Modern forum
Posted on April 17, 2015, 5:41 a.m. by IndepenentMeta
Ive gone over a few people's decklists and I've ran into a lot of good oppression cards in the modern format. There was one that really stuck out. I forgot what it did but it's effect automatically spelled stun. Would you guys happen to know any good oppression/sun cards in magic?
Probably the best sun card is Commander's Authority, with Heliod, God of the Sun in a close second.
But to answer your question, I'm not sure. I only play standard, not modern.

lemmingllama I didn't know hate bears was a stun deck weird lol anyways thanks man there's a ton of stuff I saw there I'll make a build and post it up later today... It's like 6:45 in the morning n I haven't slept :/

It's not called stun it's an element of stax called 'taxing'. Stax is about three things - denial, taxing, and sacrificing. You 'tax' the opponent for doing things ie. - make it cost more. Look at examples like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.

There are a lot of things you can do to slow your opponents down in Modern. Chalice of the Void set at 1 stops a lot of strong cards, 2 stops even more; Blood Moon makes most decks very sad, since most highly competitive decks only run 3-4 basic lands; Trinisphere, if dropped on early turns really slows down some decks, like affinity. There are legacy decks built around doing this, but it isn't in the current Modern meta, however, I think it could be, I am currently testing a deck (Red Stompy for the Modern Man) that promises to be fairly oppressive.

Trinisphere moderns Nether Void. :)
I'd add Voice of Resurgence|Grand Abolisher|Norn's Annex|Smallpox|Magus of the Moon
The Preaetors are all oppressive.
top 5 imo Ensnaring Bridge Chalice of the Void Blood Moon Liliana of the Veil Stony Silence
Red has really good hate cards that tend to be ineffective in modern like Boil & Flashfires they're just like Choke most decks don't run enough basics for it to matter.

Pretty sure the answer is Porphyry Nodes. If that isn't the most gnarly stax card out there...

I'd never seen Trinisphere before; does it work against competitive decks?
I could see it affecting Burn, Storm, and maybe Affinity. I would say Merfolk, but they can get around it with AEther Vial. But Trinisphere seems a little slow.
However I have no experience with it, thus why I am asking...

Trinisphere is typically bad in modern because there are so few ways to pump it out prior to turn three, and so few cards that it effects after turn 4 or so. If you can jam it out turn 1 or 2 somehow, it's amazing, but that's really hard to do, which is why it only sees major legacy play.

Yeah I thought it might be called that only thing I don't like about tax is that late game it becomes pretty easy to pay your taxes. Ummm if I could list a few yugioh stun cards and I've you guys the link would anyone mind giving me the magic equivalent?
April 17, 2015 4:05 p.m.
We could always try but I don't know what the mechanics are in yu go oh so that might not work.

So far I've seen Ensnaring Bridge, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben,AEther Vial looks like it could save your ass of you start to get mana screwed but your opened with it thank you. I liked Smallpox but it looks as if thou if your opponents more ahead on board state that it would only damage you.
I was also looking into Banisher Priest thoughts on that?
April 17, 2015 4:11 p.m.
Banisher Priest and Fiend Hunter are ok but not fantastic. Obviously if the opponent removes them then they do get their card back, but that requires them actually having removal. Generally enchantments are harder to remove than creatures so Journey to Nowhere, Oblivion Ring and Detention Sphere are better in my opinion.

Ok one main thing in stun in yuioh is fossil dyna. He doesn't let you special summon creatures and from what I think the equivalent would be is something that would only let them cast one creature spell..

chrishuffman95 says... #28
To make it easier, Stun Decks in Yugioh are meant to stop opponents from doing something. It's all about the prevention, sort of a hard control. Instead of dealing with creatures after they enter, you'd have to stop them as they enter.
With that being said, Chalice of the Void comes to mind.

IndepenentMeta says... #29
Yeah that's prolly been proven enchaments can't get hit by a lightning bolt. There was another one that let you just tapp the creature for permaent exile femme_fatal was talking bout it the other day

Oh yeah that's another good one chrishuffman95 what are the typical drop numbers I should have it at? Two would be my best guess to stop snap casters

Cheifbell actually that might work quicker than the one I had in mind in Eidolon of Rhetoric

So a good color as base for the deck would be WB because of discard spells, spot removal, and taxes? Am I right?

What would you guys think of Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver

Um, well... it sorta sucks. Not bad but not good.

I also wanted a boss monster and I ran into this Triad of Fates
April 17, 2015 4:36 p.m.
You should play Jesper - black, blue, white
Grand Arbiter Augustin IV is also good.
Ashiok is not so good.
April 17, 2015 4:37 p.m.
IndepenentMeta says... #39
That play would be to tax them so we could get ashiok quicker than most threats... This way we have some time to mill and summon creatures without triggering ethersworn canoist does that sound like a plan?
Taxes and ashiok? Or ashiok and Taxes
April 17, 2015 4:39 p.m.
Yeh you can slow them with ethersworn to buy time to mill with ashiok.

Chalice of the Void is always set to 1 right? Cause it helps control Path to Exile, Thoughtsieze, Lightning Bolt most of the good staples right?
JexInfinite says... #2
Please use Magic lingo. We have no idea what 'stun' is.
