The next banning is coming... What are you're thoughts?
Modern forum

So, if im correct, July 18th is the next banning. So, I was wondering what you all think will be banned and unbanned.
I honestly have no idea except one part of me thinking either Noble Hierarch , Splinter Twin , or Birthing Pod will be banned and even though it was literally JUST banned, I think Deathrite Shaman will be unbanned. I personally think there wasn't a really "good" reason it was banned.
So, you guys please tell me your opinions! Either tell me:
1) What cards you think will be banned
2) What cards you think will be unbanned
3) Why im wrong and the cards I mention wont be banned or unbanned.
Thanks for reading and posting in this thread guys! Thanks and happy deckbuilding!

I think the format is healthy. Pod and Twin variants take up a large portion of the meta, but there isn't one specific build that dominates everything.
If we have to choose something Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker seems like a possible candidate as it's pretty easy to bust him and he turns up all over the place...I'm surprised there hasn't be a splinter pod deck built around him yet...
I don't think anything will get unbanned. I disagree that the Deathrite Shaman banning was bad for the format, even if I really want to play the copies I spent months acquiring just for him to get banned before I even got to putting the deck together...

I mean Kiki-Pod as a deck exists... Including Splinter Twin in a build like that doesn't make a lot of sense because you can't tutor for it with Pod.

I doubt Birthing Pod , Splinter Twin , or Noble Hierarch will be banned or Deathrite will be unbanned. The first 3, unlike DRS, don't warp the format so that 90% of the decks that are their colors play them, except maybe Hierarch, but Hierarch still isn't as powerful as Deathrite. None of them also singlehandedly shut down an entire archetype on their own. Deathrite kills Reanimator, plain and simple. The Modern meta is nice and healthy and diverse right now. Unlike when DRS wasn't banned, Jund doesn't rule 45%+ of the meta.

@ TheHorse I know, I was just being flippant.
Alternatively you could put pods in a Splinter Twin deck...maybe in the Splinter Goyf version? It's probably unnecessary though...

ThatBlueMage, I think there would be a lot of people calling for your head if you successfully managed to ban fetches.

It would definitely lower the barrier to entry.
It would hurt my five color Solar Flare deck though...I wouldn't be particularly impressed.

Doesn't Scavenging Ooze totally shut down Reanimator as well? By the reasoning you posted ScOoze should be the next card to receive the ban hammer. The reason Deathrite Shaman was banned is because it accelerated the playing of certain card to create a severely unfair advantage. A T2 Liliana of the Veil was almost impossible for a majority of decks to overcome. A T3 one is hard, but not impossible. In all reality there is potential for Liliana of the Veil to see the hammer, but it is unlikely because Jund is not as terribly oppressive as it was this time last year.

Scooze is only on one color, whereas any deck even splashing black or green could wreck with deathrite.

Nice conversation going on here... One second, im going to get some popcorn, but keep on discussing!
July 9, 2014 4:40 p.m.
Nothing gets banned or unbanned. Modern is the healthiest it's been in a long time.
July 9, 2014 4:41 p.m.
But seriously, im very glad Noble Hierarch is out the question to be honest. Anyway, other than Kiki, anything else you guys think will be banned?
July 9, 2014 4:42 p.m.
Also, if you don't think there was a "good" reason to ban death rite you're either living under a rock or you don't play modern.
July 9, 2014 4:42 p.m.
Actually DRS was banned because it was too efficient and excellent in all phases of the game. It could accelerate early game, but late game, if played could give you that extra two points of damage, give you an extra couple life and potentially bring goyf down a notch to make it killable at the same time. It was never a card you didn't want to draw. Basically it was too good.
As for banned... IDC either way. So for sh*tz and giggles, I say ban PTE since it's such a color pie violation.
unbanning, Sensei's Divining Top is my guess. But I doubt it, though someone is trying to make the case (badly) for it to be unbanned. But this person is a 'name' on a well respected web site and because of that. I think the DCI will allow it to flow free and see how it is and will re ban it if necessary. Especially since it was preemptively banned in modern, with the first ban list, like Bitterblossom ] and that has shown to not be overly powerful in this format.
July 9, 2014 4:42 p.m.
gufymike I could see that. I'd actually enjoy that. I have 2 sweet altered tops I want to play. lol
July 9, 2014 4:44 p.m.
MindAblaze says... #21
Top is essentially a repeatable Ponder
, which is also banned. I feel like it's more dangerous than Bitterblossom
but may not necessarily fit into the meta right now. It's teetering on the edge of acceptability I think.
July 9, 2014 4:46 p.m.
I've actually been surprised there hasn't been a lot of hype surrounding this unban and no one starting a price surge on ridiculous cards. BB hitting $80 was absolutely ludicrous.
July 9, 2014 4:48 p.m.
I just didn't think he needed to be banned DrFunk27, I feel there was a good reason to ban him since him and fetches are very good together and for lots of other reasons. I just don't particularly think it needed to be banned.
July 9, 2014 4:48 p.m.
I would sit back and cackle like The Joker at all the people who sunk money into it. I know it won't happen, but I would find it amusing on a level that disturbs me.
July 9, 2014 4:50 p.m.
It's a 1 drop planeswalkers that forces itself to be played in 75%+ of the meta. It needed to be and stay banned. lol
July 9, 2014 4:51 p.m.
Ok, ok. I see your point DrFunk27. He should be banned I guess.
July 9, 2014 4:52 p.m.
meecht Tarmogoyf is actually a pretty terrible card by itself. It's playing around it, and defending it as it grows that makes it worth playing. It dies to doomblade after all. lol
July 9, 2014 4:53 p.m.
lol DrFunk27... "it dies to doom blade after all".. of course! lmao!
July 9, 2014 4:54 p.m.
I think Ponder is more broken than top. Because ponder allows you shuffle if you choose before you draw a card. Sensei's is only that power will another shuffle effect (and the argument about fetches is valid, they do make it better). But top also doesn't add to your storm count for each time you use or things like that. Which is what really makes ponder o.p.
July 9, 2014 4:55 p.m.
No, Goyf is and will never be a play around card. You just play it.
July 9, 2014 4:56 p.m.
gufymike I think if top gets unbanned that miracles comes back strong. I'd love to see that.
July 9, 2014 4:57 p.m.
TexasDice Tarmogoyf is just a green vanilla beater. Yes it's amazing but there's nothing special about it. There's nothing that screams "ban me!"
July 9, 2014 4:59 p.m.
Servo_Token says... #34
Miracles is definitely a thing, and top is the perfect enabler for it. I could see that coming back like faeries never did if top gets unbanned.
July 9, 2014 4:59 p.m.
blackmarker90 says... #35
Top was banned for the same reason Eggs got hit, games were taking to long to complete
July 9, 2014 5 p.m.
I never thought faeries would come back. The deck is way to fringe and terrible in the current meta. Miracles however would be awesome.
July 9, 2014 5:01 p.m.
Basically goyf is a huge creature for 2 mana. I mean, it could be as big as 8/9 for 2 mana or a 0/1 for 2 mana. Its not ban worthy but is an amazing card.
July 9, 2014 5:01 p.m.
I agree.
It's still not a build around card. The only setup goyf needs is:- green- lands- other cards
July 9, 2014 5:01 p.m.
TexasDice what I should have said was Goyf is a card you just play and say "Here, deal with this." And then continue. Like TarmoTwin. Perfect spot for Goyf to thrive.
July 9, 2014 5:04 p.m.
Kiki may get banned because it's run in a vast variety of things for no reason but to end the game on the spot. It's very..... unsatisfying to play against.
I don't mind anything though. Modern is healthy, I wouldn't think anything particularly does need to be banned or unbanned.
DRS was very, very good and I can kind of see why it was banned. Meh. Life goes on. G/B/x still makes up a lot of the meta!
July 9, 2014 5:41 p.m.
Metroid_Hybrid says... #42
Banning Tarmogoyf would interesting because I think it would completely change the entire meta of the format, maybe not necessarily in a good way, but it would definitely happen..
July 9, 2014 5:54 p.m.
Servo_Token says... #43
Not to mention how many people quit playing because their $800 investment just got banned. They need to print a goyf hoser before they ban goyf, or they need to flood the market with them to keep people from jumping ship. You can't just ban a $200 card. Its legacy value doesn't support that kind of price tag.

Oh I know.... Ban Melira, Sylvok Outcast so that persist is fixed again! We can just forget about all those bs tournaments won by that card
July 9, 2014 5:59 p.m.
Yeah, kill Melira Pod so people can play real decks... like Kiki-Pod! /s
July 9, 2014 6:05 p.m.
The only card they should ban to slow down pod is it's enabler, Chord of Calling and that's getting a reprint so it's not getting banned.

I miss playing the shaman in 4 color burn...(everything but blue). I get why he was banned but that deck was just fun. other than that nothing jumps out at me as needing a ban. Maybe we'll see and unbanning of Golgari Grave-Troll ? I've heard he's not so busted without the other piece though can't remember what it was. Also there's an absolute ton of ways to hate out dredge in the format anyways.
July 9, 2014 7:07 p.m.
I wouldn't mind seeing Grave Troll back but WotC hates dredge and believe it's a bogus mechanic that never should have been invented just like Tarmogoyf. lol I don't see dredge becoming a part of Modern ever again.
July 9, 2014 7:10 p.m.
Top is banned for the same reason as Second Sunrise : time constraints. 30 top activations a game (R/W/U Control mirror) really cuts into the time.
As soon as Blistercoil Weird wins a GP or PT, it's going to get banned, but not until then.

Wondering why you think Noble Hierarch is ban worthy?
