The Return of Affinity?

Modern forum

Posted on Jan. 22, 2015, 6:41 p.m. by Ryotenchi

Ive read in several places that it may make "a short comeback". My concern is: will it make one at all without new cards to bolster its popularity?

Also, will it remain a tier 2 deck with the recent bannings or return to its tier 1 identity?

(Sources I read this from were more speculation. Id just like to dust mine off. Apologies if there is another forum under this topic or this is ill formatted, I did check for other topics and find none recent.)

I don't think it was ever tier 2...

Affinity will be at least tier 1.5, but I think it can see a return to tier 1. It's hard to know for certain, it really just depends on what new decks will spring up due to Golgari Grave-Troll being a thing and Birthing Pod being banned. All in all, the meta will be similar to pre-Khans

The way I understood it, Delver pushed it lower in the meta. No one runs it at my LGS so... Im a little out of the loop... as It seemed to disappear with KoT. Im gonna try to look up previous events later and see how often it shows up. :P

Affinity is always going to be T1 until they ban Cranial Plating.

Sweet. :3

And nothing will spring up that uses Golgari Grave-Troll. It isn't that great of a card.

Yeah, Affinity is one of the best decks in Modern. I don't think it's ever been less than Tier 1. It's also a deck with lots of intricacies and synergy.

I have a good friend that pilots the deck in both Modern and Legacy. He stated that one of the best Affinity pilots on the planet is a mathematician. Interesting.

I started panicking for a moment when I thought you meant Affinity had pretty much left Modern entirely.

Affinity is always going to be good. You just need to figure out a strong sideboard for the metagame, because ~45 (maybe more) of your maindeck slots are locked in.

My bad GoldGhost012, The title is misleading, as I myself... uh... mislead myself into believing affinity had lost popularity in the shadow of delver. :3

@Ryotenchi

Lost popularity? Sure. Stopped being good? Lolno.

@sylvannos

I should petition to have the deck name changed to Cranial Plating, but Affinity sounds sleeker and more ambiguous I suppose.

I would like to sign this petition. Who says Activated Abilities has to be called Splinter Twin and Triggered Abilities has to be called Scapeshift?

If at least one person sees what I did there, I will be happy.

@aeonstoremyliverFrank Karsten, one of the best affinity players in the game has a PHD in game theory and resource allocation. So basically the man got to get a PHD in magic and other strategy games.

Damn, those degrees exist? I gotta get me one of those.

Game theory is intense. Don't do it unless you liked that one chapter your high school math classes gave to probability.

I don't think affinity has ever not been tier 1 since the February banning of death rite. It has consistently been one of the top 4 decks in the meta. You could argue as of late that it is tier 1.5 but it is definitely not 2. With Cruise and pod banned it moves up the chart since delver and pod won't be in the picture. I think more people will play it and then people will sideboard against it making it making the deck harder to win with.
