Thoughtseize vs...wallet.
Modern forum

Seeing as Thoughtseize runs about 70 bones, I was wondering what do you guys think of the alternatives...
Duress : Old standby, only hits noncreature, nonland...
Despise : interesting, planeswalkers and creatures...it has some relevance I suppose.
Inquisition of Kozilek : restricted to CMC three or less, but the speed of the format means it hits lots of relevant cards...
Distress : waits until turn two to make its presence known, hits anything though...
Anything specific I missed???

Honestly, Modern is all about speed and getting things out as quickly as possible, there is a reason top decks with black in them usually run Thoughtseize and/or Inquisition of Kozilek . As mentioned Inquisition of Kozilek hits a lot of quick removal and early game cards, making it pretty amazing for disruption. Most decks worth mentioning in the Modern format run cards with low CMC for the sake of quickness. I think Inquisition of Kozilek is the best substitute for Thoughtseize in the Modern meta game.

Inquisition of Kozilek is normally close to as good, but sometimes you just want to run both Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize

inquisition is best because it hits most of the meta, other than that probably duress as creatures are handled with a removal spell.

It's for protection of a combo, I'm thinking Duress is feasible for my purpose but I'm probably going to be looking at either one of the two main ones aren't I?

If it's for anti disruption Duress and Inquisition of Kozilek would both serve as you are just looking to take counter/kill magic. The only thing you would miss is if someone has a Snapcaster Mage in hand with counter magic in the grave.

Thoughtseize is remarkable because if you are the aggressor, you don't care about the life loss. If you're going to use the others, you need to know what purpose you're using them for. For instance, if you're using Inquisition of Kozilek , you are trying to pick apart the opponent's early game, such as removal, goyfs, etc but you'll have no luck against Birthing Pod or Karn Liberated so your deck needs to be able to handle those in another way.

No its not, Mental Misstep destroyed legacy when it was legal. And it was a preemptive but needed ban.

okay, I had the same problem with thoughtseize vs my wallet... I went with inquisition of kozilek in my deck instead... it works fine for my needs. Who needs friends?. you can check it out right there. I actually tried to make a budget playable modern deck... the shell was good back in the day, I just used some newer cards to supplement it.

@theemptyquiver I agree I picked up 4 copies of mental misstep early and now they just sit in my binder waiting for a kinder future.

I guess the point is to lead with hand disruption, utility creature fetchland more disruption, combo out turn four in a perfect world; I probably could get away with Inquisition since it'll hit any instant speed spot removal or counters, and even most graveyard hate

goddamnit... I guess my deck link was messed up and I am not the only one naming a deck "who needs friends?". here is the link to my actual deckhttp://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/who-needs-friends-1/

Isn't Duress still in Modern? If so, that's definitely your go-to. Save yourself the cash and the two life to boot!

how the hell does one mana cause a card to go from $0.99 to $54.00? (Distress -Thoughtseize )

Appetite for Brains exiles though I am curious for the application of the card. Are you using it mainboard as protection? Or what?
