Hey everyone, I just built/ordered the pieces to my first Modern Deck and went with a MonoUTron. I'll get the list posted soon. Is there anyone on here with a MonoUTron list that explains play lines along with it? I chose it because I'm new to the format and the decisions seem somewhat simple, but knowing what hands to keep/dump would be cool.

I also have a rules-related question. I believe I ordered 5th Edition versions of the Urza's lands and just received the mines today. They're white-bordered. Does that mean they're not tournament legal?

As long as a card was reprinted in a set that would make it legal, it doesn't matter what set you're using it from. So you're good.

Nothing like turn 3 Karn Liberated to make people hate the deck. With that said get a list soon will help you tweak it for the modern meta

is my fiance's U Tron deck. The normal wincon is the Mindslaver combo using Academy Ruins and enough mana to produce 11 colorless and U. This allows you to keep the opponent in a lock where they aren't able to cast spells and eventually draw themselves out.

Yep Mindslaver . Lock is a bitch

Honestly I find it more reliable than a Karn Liberated early.

Depending on the matchup it can be great. Then again depending on the matchup neither could happen

Thanks everyone! The deck is MonoUTron. I'd love thoughts on it--from mainboard to maybeboard. I have zero experience in Modern and am looking to tune so that I can take this machine out.

I play U/G Tron in Modern, myself. You mulligan hands that have no tron pieces or ways of finding them (such as multiple copies of Expedition Map ). You want to have the full set up and running by turn four, preferably turn three. It's imperative you get turn three Wurmcoil Engine or Oblivion Stone up and running to stabilize the board. Otherwise, you'll be overrun.

Thanks, sylvannos. That helps.

Here's my UTron deck, BtLrUoEn. I have a more diversified creature package. Also not a fan of Oblivion Stone in the deck, so it has been dropped.

Also, I'd like to point out that Karn Liberated is the big wincon in R/G Tron, not UTron.

Heck, since we're on the Tron Train in this topic. Check out this Tron/Elf ball deck I built. This thing could really take off imo.

Tron be Ballin', Elf Ballin'

Annnnnnddddd THIS is why I have Sowing Salt in my sideboard.

Aaaaaaaaaand cards like that are why I play Mono Blue Tron, counter spells are my friend!

Also I'd like to point out that although sylvannos is right about getting out Wurmcoil Engine as fast as possible in other Tron decks, UTron isn't looking to get it quite so fast. With blue, you're looking to put together Tron, but you're also looking to have three U sources by turn 4...once you hit that number, the rest of the game is almost guaranteed.

ConBurnMadMan, that makes sense and I've been testing and comparing opening hands. Definitely good advice.

Luckily no one in my LGS plays U Tron... also every Tron deck I've run into so far has been the RG version. U Tron may be the better way to go since it protects itself better.

ConBurnMadMan what do you think of Grand Architect in Utron lists?

July 22, 2013 11:31 p.m.

See Grand Architect is what I call a Mirage card. At first it looks awesome, but the closer you look the more you realize nothing is there. His biggest problem is he doesn't help UTron do what it wants to do, which is stall. Your basically looking to stall the game into turns 5-6 where you want tron online. Once you hit that point you need to check you resources. Do you have Treasure Mage to tutor, and if so do you have counter backup to make him stick? Do you have Academy Ruins out or an Expedition Map in hand?? Should you start moving towards the Mindslaver plan or are you down in life and Wurmcoil Engine is your answer?? Playing against combo, well lets pop Platinum Angel and laugh as they hit the giant speed bump. There are so many decision trees in this deck once you set the foundation, unfortunately Grand Architect does things we don't really care about. We are already ramping with Tron and we also have Talisman of Dominance . We can spend this mana on anything and just not artifects. I think Grand Architect has a home somewhere, just not here.
