Im running Varolz, the Scar-Striped as a one of in my Melira Pod deck. Im curious why pretty much no other list is running him. He is just soo good. Its a sac outlet you can pod into from a 2 drop, he regenerates and i have won some games just scavenging stuff onto him.

Why isn't Varolz, the Scar-Striped played more in melira pod?

Because there are slots in the melira pod list that can go to more deserving one ofs. Hes good for value but thats it, in a world of decks that want to kill you quickly, disruptive creatures are proving more useful than straight up value;

Continuing on what alpinefroggy, he's fighting over that slot with a host of other creatures. Specifically, your deck is missing Orzhov Pontiff , which can steal games and push you over into lethal. Spike Feeder , Phyrexian Metamorph , Sin Collector , etc. all take priority in most lists.

Varolz, the Scar-Striped is better in decks that are built around him (i.e. with Vexing Devil and Death's Shadow ) or that play long, grindy games of attrition.

Your list plays different than most, as it has the extra copies of Melira, Sylvok Outcast and Viscera Seer , as well as Bond Beetle .

i know this is kind of random but can you play Vexing Devil and sacrifice it to Birthing Pod instead of its own ability?

@diabeetus101:

1) No, because you can't sacrifice something to two different spells or effects.
2) ...and because Birthing Pod specifically says activate it only as a sorcery.

i actually never realized that Birthing Pod had that restriction. Birthing Pod decks just went down a notch in my mind

Instant speed Birthing Pod would be extremely broken :)

@diabeetus101 Birthing Pod decks must've been on a damn high notch in your mind then :)

I personally dislike Varolz, the Scar-Striped because many times scavenging onto a creature doesn't do anything. You make the guy bigger, but if they kill it in response or with Path to Exile then you basically just denied yourself a potential Scavenging Ooze or Eternal Witness target, both of which are much more vital to the deck.
