Varolz in modern

Why doesn't Varolz, the Scar-Striped see more play? I understand he is not capable of tier 1 deck. But i see a deck built around him being as good as dredgevine. Which too me means he should at least be seeing some fringe play.

Before last rotation, I used it as the high-drop in a hyper-aggro standard deck. I've been tempted to try the same thing in modern. I think the biggest problem, though, is that there are many ways in modern to kill it before you get any value from it (Path to Exile and Terminate are two of the biggest ways). And considering what 3-drops in Modern usually look like, you generally have much better options.

Like you said, I think you'd pretty much have to build a deck around it for it to have a chance of being good--and somehow make that deck resilient so that Varolz getting killed right away doesn't destroy your game plan.

I wonder if there is something else that can use the cards in the graveyard, that way you have a back up option in the case you don't have varolz.

Maybe some general purpose reanimator stuff? If the creatures have enough of an impact, Unburial Rites could be okay. Alternately, you could go all-in on the Varolz plan and run something like Gifts Ungiven to load up the graveyard for Varolz.

I went with a dredgevine strategy, using faithless looting and grisly salvage to dig for cards

I use varolz as an alternate sac outlet in my pod deck, since I run a lot of two drops.
