W/B Super Dicard?

Modern forum

I was recently making a stream of decks based around the Lieges of old, and when making one around Deathbringer Liege, I came across Castigate. Being simultaneously White and Black was a huge plus for me so I slapped it in, knowing very well that Tidehollow Sculler existed. The more I played with this card, the more I loved it, it may be a higher mana cost than Thoughtseize/Inquistion of Kozilek, and doesn't have the body Tidehollow Sculler has. Is it worth playing though? Maybe only as a sideboard card, it seems amazing against modern Sneak and Show. I like the ability of this card to poop on Eldrazi. Any opinions are welcome and appreciated.

Seems like not worth it. It'll take too long to build mana to make those things work and when it does, the creatures will die to removal, hard. Very slow for competitive modern too.

Seems great for casual. I love the artwork though!

Play it after four Thoughtseize and four Inquisition of Kozilek, because those are just better cards for the format. Losing life is not a cost at all, and being harder to cast is relevant as well.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Modern Sneak and Show". Legacy?

I tried using it in Wb death & taxes and it's ok. Not good. Just ok. A turn is a big difference. If they're on the play it's the difference between hitting Pod or not.

Seems like a strictly worse Thoughtseize or even Duress, not necessarily to costing two mana, but mostly because it costs two different colors. Your sniping spells in any deck that runs black really need to be easily castable.

Also, pooping on Eldrazi isn't super huge in Modern right now.

I was referring to Deathbringer Liege's artwork.

I think he may mean Tooth and Nail by Show and Tell

Modern Sneak and Show uses Through the Breach in place of Sneak Attack and Goryo's Vengeance as the best replacement for Show and Tell. Their win cons are Emrakul and Griselbrand, so exiling them can be a big deal.

I'm aware of that deck, except that's not what it's called. Generally people just call it Goryo's Vengeance or Reanimator.

Making your opponent discard Emrakul shuffles him back in, so that doesn't matter much and can actually help you if they don't have a reanimation spell. If you're taking Griselbrand and not the actual reanimation spell/Through the Breach, you're doing it wrong. Also, note that no one plays that deck.

I have to disagree that "noone plays that deck" also for the late game shuffling back in can be very relevant.

Why would it be relevant? Their win condition is reanimating something (or Through the Breaching something, but if you're playing discard spells take the Through the Breach). Shuffling their yard back in makes them do extra work. If they have the Goryo's Vengeance, you should probably be taking that away in the first place.

No, no one plays the deck. It hasn't placed in MtGO events in a very long time. 2 people made Day 2 at GP Madrid with Through the Breach (one of which was the RG version). No one played Reanimator on Day 2 of GP Milan. Even if it was marginally played, Thoughtseize is better against a wider range of decks, so I'd advise playing that instead.

As for Snapcaster Mage flashing stuff back, often it's the best play to Thoughtseize away the Snapcaster Mage in the first place.

All these discard spells are great if you can find them with their pants down (or said cards in hand) but if one isn't available, maybe exiling the card is the best to do.

Ok a related question, I'm building W/B tokens with the new Monastery Mentor, now is Castigate better than Tidehollow Sculler? I'd get at least one monk token, and at least one prowess trigger(with the mentor out).

Play 4 Thoughtseize and 4 Inquisition of Kozilek before any copies of it. Keeping the curve low in that deck is important, and I think you only want 6 discard spells anyway.

I can definitely agree with that, I know that a lot of W/B token list are packing Tidehollow Sculler so I wasn't sure with Monastery Mentor if that kind of card would be cut completely, or replaced with (my new personal favorite) Castigate.

Oh god, Seek is a pretty amazing cards. Hitting Karns/Emrakul's from tron, and hitting Treasure Cruise just for the eight life.
