what creature do you wish was good enough for modern?

This is to discuss what creature(s) you wish were good enough to be played in competitive modern. Mine is Sidisi, Brood Tyrant. I loved her in my standard deck, and Ive tried hard to get her to work in a competitive modern deck, and it just can't be done.

So what are some creatures you really wish were good enough for competitive modern?

asasinater13 says... #2

Lotleth Troll is a pet card of mine I wish could be competitive. but it has too much competition at the two-drop spot with Pack Rat, Tarmogoyf, Scavenging Ooze all being less color intensive than it. also the regenerate is cool but Path to Exile is too in the format for it to be totally reliable. Maybe in some version of dredge(vine)? it could be done. If I had the money for a playset of vengevines, gravecrawlers, and a G/B land base I would probably make something of it, but unfortunately I can't afford that.

I wish Reaper King was playable in Modern because I just love Scarecrow cards. Sadly he's only good as a general and even then he isn't amazing.. :/

I really wish Baron Sengir was viable. For as boring a reason as I love the art. Unfortunately he doesn't even make the cut in commander, never mind modern.

Wild Beastmaster. I loved playing my standard deck with it, but it's just too slow and vulnerable to be playable in modern.

Blood baron is one ive tried to make work too.

I really like lotleth troll in dredgevine decks. Hes one of my all time favorite creatures.

imagine if Blood Baron of Vizkopa was 4 CMC but only a 3/3? Vulnerable to bolts as about the only modern removal spell, basically good against everything else still. more playable or less? or lose the trinket text (second ability) and make it a 5/5 to not die to stormbreaths? which alter would be more playable

April 13, 2015 7:53 p.m.

kintighd says... #12

I dont know if a four mana 3\3 would see play. Thats a tough what if question though since he would have great protection.

I don't like the idea of playing a dredge deck, but I would love some kind of G/B midrange grave-based thing with Lotleth Troll. I know, I should just give in and be a dredge player, but i think it's too fragile. Maybe something like G/B/u for draw spells. if only we still had Treasure Cruise to splash...... it made so many fringe deck playable, but too many good decks broken. If I wasn't on a budget something like bob, troll, vengevine, gravecrawler, tasigur would be a cool shell. Now I want to go make this for cockatrice and lose all my games... with that tasigur/bob combo I might as well run death's shadow.

back on topic, Kiora, the Crashing Wave and Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver are two awesome planeswalkers I wish were more playable. actually first I wish they would leave standard, drop in price so I can buy playsets, then get playable.

Lets take a step back to 2013 and play in a meta with a bazillion Thragtusks again, I'd be fine with that

April 13, 2015 8:09 p.m.

asasinater13 says... #16

ew. Thragtusk standard. I took a break while playing when that happened (not because of, just happened to be that time because money) and my only regret is missing out on pulling the cool angels and snapcasters during innistrad block.

I miss Hellrider

April 13, 2015 8:15 p.m.

asasinater13 says... #18

okay I regret not playing with Hellrider. I bought like 10 total packs of dark ascension, maybe, and I pulled three. traded into a fourth. I have a blast playing with my casual friends at hell rider, Krenko's Command, Dragon Fodder, Raid Bombardment. I need a playset of Hordeling Outburst to make it better. and when they rotate and price drops splash black for Brutal Hordechief and dropping Raid Bombardment.

April 13, 2015 8:23 p.m.

kintighd says... #19

I think hellrider could be playable if he was 3 for 3/3.

would you give the three mana hellrider haste? and RR1 or just R2?

Tarmogoyf. He's just not as good as Knight of the Reliquary. Jk, just thought I'd reference that thread because why not?

In all seriousness, I would love to see AEtherling become more viable in a control shell. I mean, he works, but I chronically find myself preferring to run Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, Karn Liberated, and more Tron-based things.

Butcher of the horde.i love that card

Vampire Nighthawk. Is it playable already? I don't know, It's really on the verge. But a 2/3 flying deathtouch lifelink is just so sweet, and it was one of my first cards i ever pulled. It's a little slow though, and I've always scoffed a little bit when it's on the opposite side of the table even if i like the card. It's just not there.

Lotleth Troll in non dredge Zombiepox xD

Dalektable, Its extremely fringe playable... Im on that fringe, for lack of a better option. :(

My pick: Hex Parasite... Looks menacing, but I bet yeh its the size of a pin head. (Can kill walkers... cost too much.. )

April 14, 2015 4:52 a.m.

Hex parasite has always been interesting. Idk if nighthawk is playable. But he sure is annoying to play against, if you dont have any removal.

I agree with the Guttersnipe and Vampire Nighthawk votes.

I've tried making pseudo-storm decks with Guttersnipe with Young Pyromancer, Curiosity, a lot of rituals, cantrips, and Twiddle affect cards. It was fun for so; but not competitive...

Vampire Nighthawk is my favorite card. However, every modern deck I've ever played him in I've eventually replaced him with a better option. I think if he had 4 toughness and didn't die to lightning bolt he might see a tiny bite o play or sideboard action, but still probably not.

April 14, 2015 12:42 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #35

Vampire Nighthawk is a lot like Serra Angel

kick-ass when they were first printed. Everyone wanted to run the hell out of them but then over time they slowly just got outclassed by creatures with non-evergreen abilities

I think the night Hawk lacks a good shell. There's no good mono black thing going on, and better the drops in multi color or other colors

April 14, 2015 12:52 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #37

If tribal vamps were competitive........

single tear

April 14, 2015 12:54 p.m.

asasinater13 says... #38

Yeah. Like the card seems good enough for mono black, there is no three drop that out classes it in your colors. But going past that there's more worthwhile two drops a lot.

April 14, 2015 12:57 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #39

I wanna brew a modern Mono Black Aggro deck. I don't see why it couldn't work.

Anyway the black the drops Vampire Nighthawk competes with are Liliana of the Veil budget Lilly aka Gatekeeper of Malakir and Geralf's Messenger. Beyond those Herald of Torment Necroplasm and Phyrexian Totem

April 14, 2015 1:09 p.m.

sylvannos says... #40

I'd second (err...third? Fourth?) Vampire Nighthawk. The thing is, the card is completely Modern viable...if Modern didn't have Lightning Bolt. He trades with every other creature in the format and the lifegain is relevant.

My other choices are most Goblin cards (such as Goblin Chieftain), Lodestone Golem, and Trygon Predator.

April 14, 2015 7:15 p.m.

Rakdos, Lord of Riots: The massive flaw is the cast restriction he comes with. He can compete in combat with just about everything outside of Tron and Amulet Bloom. Everything is a mess about him though, as if he can't decide between being an early game bomb or late game power without being able to do either so well. He has the competitive play-ability of a fish stick, Abyssal Persecutor will have to do.

kintighd says... #42

Hed be interesting in a midrange deck that runs lots of spells that deal damage to the oppponent. I mean getting a 6\6 for 4 is great if you can deal damage to an opponent on a regular basis.

April 14, 2015 8:25 p.m.

buildingadeck says... #44

Strangleroot Geist sees some play in Green Aggro decks. He is a great two drop with Garruk Wildspeaker out, too, and if he gets Bolted he gets bigger. He's not Tarmogoyf, but I've seen him in a few decks recently.

April 16, 2015 9:41 a.m.

vishnarg says... #49

Siege Rhino is really cool flavor wise, but don't play it competitively. It's effect doesn't affect the board at all - you will lose the game if you tap out for it, if you're stupid enough to put it in your deck.

April 16, 2015 9:44 a.m.

kintighd says... #50

Siege rhino is the 7th most played creature in modern right now.
