What is Monastery Mentor used in?

Modern forum

Ive been told Monastery Mentor is used in Modern, and it makes sense since that price tag would only be held in Modern for this card. What is he used in?

Legacy Esper Mentor and Miracles. You'll see it in some modern builds but not many.

Well, that was not what I expected. Shows what I know, I really didnt think it was Legacy-level good, my apologies for putting this in the wrong forum

Legacy has this weird thing where most people expect it be more creature free because it's such a fast format, but in many cases it actually plays creatures that modern players wouldn't touch. The reason for this is that with the icnrease number of 0 and 1 mana noncreature spells you can benefit from prowess earlier. The format is also a little lighter on removal too.

Now I really wanna design Legacy Miracles... I wonder if EM is friendly to that deck... Imma head to mtgtop8 and see what this looks like. I may have found another option for an eventual Legacy deck, since D&T didnt get as much help as I was hoping for

Okay...I looked up Esper Mentor, and I think I'm in love with this deck if I can just figure out a way to make it work without dual lands (shouldnt be too horrible, it only runs 4 total). Seriosuly some of my favorite cards ever are in this deck. (btw someone feel free to move this to Legacy if you guys want)

Actually, most of this guy's price comes from Vintage demand, where he is a staple finisher in quite a few decks, just by being a white Young Pyromancer.

Would anyone happen to have a Legacy Miracles list that's running this guy?

Would I be correct in saying that no FoW in Modern is a contributing factor to this?

Lack of force of will, sensei's top and others yeah.

Lack of ponder and brainstorm are also big ones.

There are some modern attrition decks that play mentor, but they're fairly fringe decks and very meta dependent. A friend of mine pays Abzan LoamPox with 2 Mentors mainboard for a good while and qualified for 3 SCG invitationals with the deck. It's a deck that thrives with slower metagames since it can be a little slow against affinity, Bushwhacker zoo and the like, but he wrecks burn with all his hand disruption and resource denial.

Just to help out a bit, if you have shock lands you can run those in place of the dual lands, at least for the time being.

They're a much cheaper alternative with a relatively minor drawback.

Top is really the only thing that binds the deck together. Without it, you're having to use some really janky ways to put Miracles on top of your deck. I don't see how there could be a Modern Miracles deck just considering that there's no Top.

Going back to Mentor, though, it crushes in Vintage. That has a lot to do with its value, surprisingly.

I played against a modern U/W storm deck that used mentor just in case it couldn't quite hit it's storm count. Really strong build.

APPLE01DOJ I'm confused. You mean UWr Storm? Because I don't think you can storm without ....lol

Grapeshot was the only red in the deck and it didn't even have red producing lands only Mox Opal and Glimmervoid.

It would use Puresteel Paladin and all the CMC 0 artifacts to filter through its deck until it found the blue 1 CMC card that returns all artifacts you own to hand, rinse and repeat.

Ah yes, Cheerios. Such a fun deck. A buddy of mine built it for a bit and have only seen it in the wild once. I almost lost to it and was all "I'm not even going to be mad if you pull this off".

It's its own vintage archetype.
