What is the Perfect Storm?

Modern forum

Of course, I jest. "Perfect" is impossible. I'm curious, though, about what is the best storm deck. I know of Pyromancer Ascension combo and Waste Not combo, but what is the best storm deck? Factors to debate: Price, Strength, Fun (subjective), and Consistency. I ask because I want a secondary modern deck in case I want to try something new at my FNM. Anyway, I appreciate any thoughts! Thank y'all, and have a wonderful day.

Edit: Some how this being in the MODERN FORUM wasn't information enough for some of y'all. I am looking for Modern decks. Thanks!

The Ascension deck is the most popular variant for a reason.

Yeah, the original Finkel version is about as good as can be done. But other brews could be better in particular metas.

I also like variants of a lesser-known storm deck called "the twiddle deck," which is less weak to removal, but very weak to Ghost Quarter. This is my version: Dig for Fire (Twiddle Storm) there's a link to the original twiddle deck in the description.

I also think it's possible to brew a storm deck that's primarily based on token production over multiple turns, through Young Pyromancer and Empty the Warrens. But I've yet to come up with the right list. The idea is that it might be more resilient against counterspells and hand disruption, as it would have a less explosive, repeatable, multi-stage wincon.

So storm variants: UR Ascension, UWRg Ascendancy (some people still try it), Mono red Locket of Yesterdays, Mono red Ascension, Grixis / BR Waste Not, RUG / UG Twiddle, Paradise Cantrips.

In order of most to least competitive, I'd mark them as:

UR Ascension, Mono Red Ascension, Paradise cantrips, Mono Red Locket, Grixis Waste not, UG Twiddle, BR waste not, RUG twiddle, UWRg ascendancy.

Perfect Storm is also the name of the Legacy version.

Not sure why you think Ascendancy is that bad. The Jeskai version is better than every variant you listed except for the stock version.

Ascendancy is practically unplayable without Treasure Cruise. Though with the card the deck is absolutely top tier, so you may have a point, but i've never seen it win a game since the ban.

You're talking about the mana creature version. The straight Jeskai version is still totally reasonable, despite losing Dig.

The one that uses Faerie Conclave and Fatestitcher? Definitely forgot that was a thing. Yeah, that would go right above paradise cantrips on my list. I've played mono red before and it's incredibly consistent, definitely what I'd recommend as a budget version, so I have to list that second, but I would put faith in the UWR version to take down an FNM.

Storm is an incredibly strong archetype to play in modern. It's just so hard to learn and master. You have to think your entire turn through before you decide to combo off or not. You're forced to make a small, yet game changing decision every spell you cast so that you win. I've been playing storm for about a half a year now, and it's still my favorite deck (ur ascension). I might go 0-4 because of bad matchups or incredibly stupid misplays, or I might just sweep everyone and go 4-0 because no one can out race me or beat my sideboard cards. I feel like the hardest part of a storm deck is learning how to interact with other decks while playing probably the most uninteractive deck in modern. Stay calm and storm on my friend!

So I kinda play whatever, not following any format. Could I get some links to storm decks that used to be awesome, disregarding any banned cards?

If we're not holding to a format then cheerio's is my favorite.

It basically abuses zero cost creatures.

Kobold Assault is my version.

Pyromancer's Swath is a fun one to use too. Phyrexian Swath is how i did it.

Puresteel Paladin Can be used with zero cost equipment to make a pretty good one. (sorry no version of that one)

No format? There's this: UB Storm

If you don't have 17K to spend, there's these:

Legacy Storm

Grapeshot Storm

Kobold Storm AKA All of the 0 Drops Ever!(this one can be done pretty cheaply if you replace Bayou with Overgrown Tomb)

Edit is up.

I must have confused CharlesMandore with original poster (must be the colorful usernames).

TheFoilAjani - so what Modern storm deck do you think you'll settle on (just curious)?

As an addition to everything Agent and Junk Mage broke down, I'll point out that you can run a budget version of UR Ascension for about $200. Basically, that means that you omit Scalding Tarn from the mainboard and Blood Moon from the side - they're significant losses, but it's do-able, and I'd rank that as slightly better than Mono Red Ascension (which can be done for less than $80, I think).

Wizard_of_the_Broke I've tested Waste Not, and tried traditional storm. Either one of those probably.
