Where CAN'T you put Tasigur?

Someone said to me that you can play Tasigur in any deck, and I think it's probably worth listing every deck, and evaluating whether he is worth playing.

Burn:

Tasigur can come down on T3 consistently, but sometimes on T2. This immediate threat demands attention, forcing the opponent to put resources into not stopping your threat of burn spells. If Tasigur is unchecked, he will just win you the game. Similar logic to running Goyf in Twin.

I'm not sure if a deck is still burn if it's running him lol. Also, most other decks that run him (in my experience) can also get him out t2-t3. I'm not really sure if it's worth splashing black just for Taz.

Naya Burn is pretty popular right now. I could see Jund being a thing, the ability to recur 3dmg spells makes the deck more consistent and takes Burn out of the Topdeck situations it hates and loses often. I don't see it sweeping or Top8ing, but it's fun to talk about.

Twin:

It's like Tarmo Twin, but with Goyf.

Jund also allows access to Goyf. Something to consider.

Burn with Goyf and Taz is no longer burn lol then it's just jund midrange

It's technically burn if you have 12+ burn spells

Elves would suck with him.

"Oh let me mill my Craterhoof Behemoth that I'm never getting back. GG, shall we move to game two?"

I think Tron just can't play him at all.

Goyf is the most powerful burn spell Wizards ever made. Right next to Psionic Blast. (I'm very tired and thus kidding).

I could see Grixis too. Bump in the Night. Card Draw. If Treasure Cruise was still legal, I would have just broke the meta so hard that... Something something Mark Rosewater.

Just because you can put Tasigur into a lot of decks, it doesn't necessarily mean you should. Burn was pointed out as an example. Say you've got your opponent down to 3 life and you're relying on topdecking. Instead of that Lightning Bolt or other burn spell you could have drawn, you get a tasigur, who is affected by summoning sickness and will most likely get pathed almost immediately.

But you could activate the Tas to get a burn spell back? It doesn't matter whether you should do it or not, just whether you can.

xzzane says... #13

To get it back would require 4 mana, 2 of which would have to be green. That would be really hard for burn to do, considering it runs a lot less lands than most decks do. I guess it's technically possible, I would just highly recommend against it.

It's a shocking plan, but it could work.

This whole thread is basically about forcing Tasigur. I want to find where you can't force him.

March 31, 2015 11:47 p.m.

You don't want to put Taz in Burn. Ever. He serves as a body. Does RDW/Burn play Goyf? No? Why not? Because it's a body. Eidolon of the Great Revel is better in the 2CMC slot because it's a body and furthers our game plan.

I'd rather play Ball Lightning over Taz in RDW/Burn, and I do.

That being said, he fits into midrange/tempo/control strategies like Jund and Abzan. Quite well, as he can shrink opposing Goyfs.

aeonstoremyliver I don't care whether it's an awful idea or not. You can force it, and that's the point.

You currently cannot force it into Tron or Elves.

Affinity and Tas? Nah.

Some of the combo decks want nothing to do with a Tasigur. E.g. Storm, Eggs, Martyr-Proc, etc. Scapeshift would be the only one where Tasigur could be considered, but I see it as an outside chance that would only hurt that deck's gameplan.

Omnarscience and Goryo's Breach don't want to play Tasigur. He's nowhere near as good as Griselbrand, Narset, Enlightened Master, or the Big E.

I cannot force tasigur in a Tron Shell. He would simply be stricly worse than even a basic land.

non-tier 1 combo lists don't want him, as well as very synergistic things like fish, eggs or bogle. Other than that, force tasigur away!

I would keep the concept of including him down to decks that already play at least one of the 3 colors he uses... thus being able to splash only 1 other color.

Trying to include him in a mono- or Burn means splashing 2 colors. - This will be counter productive.

Other decks like -Tokens (for example) would be able to make full use of him by only splashing either or . (and, in this case, good use as a large/cheap creature without the splash).
Making it an Esper Tokens deck may work for including him, and getting great value... it also opens the possibility of cards like Giest of Saint Traft ... but too many changes may mean it's no longer "Tokens", but rather some new build.

This is what I would suggest when looking at him. - I think he's powerful, but not really splashable. - I can see many different deck types which could arise that can use/build around him, but not many current decks than can just splash him in.

Rayenous, that's a pretty solid assessment. I'll agree with that.
