White n black modern

Modern forum

What's the meta for white and black inn modern. And anyone still have my build for it?

ChiefBell says... #2

Do you mean:

  1. 'Which decks that are popular in the modern meta include white and back?'

  2. 'Which decks that are popular in the modern meta include only white and black?'

  3. 'Which white or black cards are most popular in the modern meta?'

Why would anyone have your build for it?

White and black are (probably) the two weakest standalone colors in Modern. You've got discard spells, Path to Exile, Liliana of the Veil, Dark Confidant and that's mostly it. They need other colors to supplement them to be really powerful decks. I do not count (while others may) BW Tokens as really powerful. RUG colors are where it's at.

That said, the best deck in the format is Abzan, which contains both of those colors along with green for good creatures. Burn plays white for Boros Charm and others, and beyond that you're getting into strictly unplayable decks.

There are two popular white black decks

One is tokens

One is a midrange build modled after the legacy deck "dead guy ale" which is a grindy and slow deck. Lot's of discard and kill spells with resilient creatures

B/W Tokens is a decent tier 2 deck, and Aristocrats is an ok tier 3 list. Besides that, you have a whole bunch of Abzan decks that use B/W cards to win games.

If you are asking about specific cards, there are way too many to list. I'd simply check out this site to find some format staples.

xzzane says... #7

B/w tokens is often that of as too "fair" of a deck, and there is a lot of truth to the statement. But if built and piloted properly it can hold its own against tier 1 decks. It should also be pointed out that tokens has a good matchup against the most popular deck in the format, abzan.

March 23, 2015 4:12 p.m.

BW tokens did sort of well on pt frf and it has a good matchup against fair decks like Junk and others that are popular right now. I have a list on my profile and stanislav cifka has a current list from the pt and craig wescoe has one thats a little more dated. If you do use cifka's list dont play bitterblossom b/c they are expensive and bad.

March 23, 2015 5:34 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #9

No it doesn't do well against Junk. It's utterly annihilated by Maelstrom Pulse, Damnation, Drown in Sorrow, Abrupt Decay (targeting anthems) and most other X-for-1 cards. These all very common sideboard choices. It would do well against little kid Junk though.

March 23, 2015 5:38 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #10

For reference: I've only lost a best-of-3 against tokens one time and it was a weird Esper list I'd never ever seen before in my life. They won with Geist of Saint Traft haha.

March 23, 2015 5:40 p.m.

ChiefBell, it's best matchup is Abzan. Tokens wins the Lingering Souls fight really easily, has plentiful answers in the form of discard and removal to the smallish creature set the Abzan deck has, and in general your one-for-one removal save for Abrupt Decay on enchantments isn't really doing anything. There are certainly sideboard cards, but regardless it's hard for Abzan to beat a Vault of the Archangel and Windbrisk Heights and Lingering Souls and Bitterblossom.

March 23, 2015 5:41 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #12

Ok, I've still literally never lost a best of 3 to BW tokens.

March 23, 2015 5:44 p.m.

Yeah I think I'm making BW tokens

March 23, 2015 5:48 p.m.

xzzane says... #14

I'll take that as a challenge. Want to duel on untap.in sometime with my token deck vs your abzan deck chief?

March 23, 2015 5:50 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #15

Don't use yourself as a reference point then...

March 23, 2015 5:50 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #16

xzzane - happy to do that at some point.

VampireArmy - when it comes to playing magic I tend to trust myself piloting the deck I know I've worked at for years, over a vast majority of other people who normally look at it from across the table.

March 23, 2015 5:55 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #17

The same could be said about this opposing deck so it's moot point

March 23, 2015 5:57 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #18

That all being said, seige rhino makes life hell for Any deck hoping to win via tokens

March 23, 2015 6:02 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #19

Well I'm not too sure that GlistenerAgent has spent ages playing BW tokens against Abzan which is why I made the comment. I'd be surprised because neither of those are his standard decks. Right? I mean if xzzane had made the comment then I may have been more cautious. I essentially value statements based on how well I THINK the individual knows the deck. It is my BELIEF that Glistener plays mainly infect and scapeshift. Correct if wrong?

Also matchup got a whole lot better with the trampling rhino.

March 23, 2015 6:02 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #20

I mean no disrespect - we all have our strengths and weaknesses. I can't even begin to speak for control decks, for example.

March 23, 2015 6:04 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #21

Understandable. Just trying to be the fence here so to speak

March 23, 2015 6:06 p.m.

It's my experience from watching matches. I don't remember Abzan winning with ease against tokens. However, you may play the matchup differently and your sideboard does have some less common cards that are more powerful in that matchup. Specifically, the second Pulse, Damnation (which is less common now than at the PT) and the Drowns that are often in there.

March 23, 2015 6:17 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #23

Indeed. That is true.

March 23, 2015 6:31 p.m.

you can watch stansislav cifka shat upon paul cheon here which shows how tokens beats junk rather than just debating is with mostly baseless arguments.

March 23, 2015 6:45 p.m.

What's the bosses name from RTR in BW? Im having a hard time finding him but if u have 30 life and the have less than 10 he gains flying and 4/4

March 23, 2015 6:54 p.m.

xzzane says... #26

Are you referring to Blood Baron of Vizkopa?

March 23, 2015 6:55 p.m.

Yeah that's him thanks xyzane

March 23, 2015 7 p.m.

xzzane says... #28

No problem, but I would advise against using him though.

March 23, 2015 7:01 p.m.

5 mana cards must actually win the game. Celestial Colonnade, Keranos, God of Storms and even then its mostly in control.

March 23, 2015 7:06 p.m.

Yeah that's America colors I'm only using BW

March 23, 2015 7:33 p.m.

23-03-15-Jxg-uw-aggro

Here's my build but blood baron viskopa might go out

March 23, 2015 7:35 p.m.

Is there Nything that minuses N oppenet Nd gains me life.. I saw like 1-2 cards wherein kinda sounded like they were suppose to do that

March 23, 2015 7:43 p.m.

lemmingllama says... #33

Link for the lazy UW aggro

Also this list isn't really a token deck at all, your only way of making tokens is Lingering Souls

As for cards that make your opponent lose life and you gain life, are you looking for small-scale cards like Syphon Soul or large scale cards like Exsanguinate?

March 23, 2015 7:51 p.m.

Just got to see the first round then they went way off camra...

March 23, 2015 8:17 p.m.

Instant for that second one

March 23, 2015 8:18 p.m.

Baltec says... #36

That is not a BW tokens deck.

March 23, 2015 9:37 p.m.

lemmingllama says... #37

There is next to nothing that is a big life swing and also at instant speed.

Also if you want hilarious looking casual cards, Sorin's Vengeance is pretty fun.

March 23, 2015 9:55 p.m.

Baltec says... #38

Gotta go for one of my all-time favorite casual cards. Debt to the Deathless

March 23, 2015 9:57 p.m.

Dn one of u look at my deck and tell me what. It's missing

March 23, 2015 10:27 p.m.

Baltec says... #40

Yeah, tokens

March 24, 2015 2:26 a.m.

xzzane says... #41

If you want help with a b/w token deck, I can certainly assist you in making one. But in order to have a b/w token deck you actually need to have tokens. It's shocking, I know.

March 24, 2015 3:58 a.m.

Meh, I think I kind-of prefer Deadguy Ale (aka, Midrange) to the tokens strategy... I'd be fine playing just Lingering Souls and removing the anthems. That's just my play-style, tho. And that's from a guy who owns a tokens deck in paper.

March 24, 2015 9:02 a.m.

Yeah I have some tokens but it's not entirely a token deck more like midrange or something.

March 24, 2015 12:44 p.m.

I'm pretty curious as to what that looks like

March 24, 2015 12:45 p.m.

lemmingllama says... #45

Currently your deck is B/W Goodstuff. It doesn't really have much of a dedicated theme for any one archetype.

March 24, 2015 1:26 p.m.

Yeah that's basically what I'm looking

March 24, 2015 2:09 p.m.

Esper big guys

So yeah there's this other build I made with Windbrisk HeightsAs a way to cheat giants. Idk I need more discard spells anybody god any good ones

March 24, 2015 6:40 p.m.
March 24, 2015 6:42 p.m.

Yeah i could prolly use some of those. But I'm looking for another way to ditch the monsters from my hand
