Why is Mother of Runes illegal in Modern?

Mother of Runes doesn't seem to be all that overpowered to me. She's susceptible to board wipes, and can only choose protection for one creature, from one color at a time, until untap.

Because it was never printed in a Modern-legal set.

Because she was never printed in a Modern Legal set. Her Only Printings were in Urza's Legacy (which is before Modern legal sets start) and Commander and Elspeth vs. Kiora (neither of which change a card's legality for Modern).

Also, Mother of Runes is much better than you think it is. In Legacy, people play very few boardwipes and she does a hell of a job stopping targeted removal. Think of her as a one-mana planeswalker who can use abilities at instant speed.

Just because its a 1/1 doesn't mean it should be looked over. I'm sure it wouldn't be game breaking if brought to modern but certainly a welcomed addition.
Mother of Runes sees play in Maverick decks in legacy. Video talking about Maverick and Mother of Runes. Also as I have learned do not pass a card over just because it looks weak individually, cards like this are strong because of the synergy they have with the overall strategy of a deck. Not just a single attempt to bring force.

Mother of Runes is ridiculous. Like, we're talking Stave Off on a stick. That mother is why legacy Death and Taxes is sooo good. Also Rishadan port.

Because it was never printed after 8th Edition. If it was, basically it would be banned because it makes creatures unblockable, and is ridiculously good in Legacy decks like Death and Taxes, Maverick, and in rogue Stoneblade builds. What they all said above. Except Obama.

One thing you could do is not look at it like it is banned. Just look at it as not legal. I know that can sound like equal statements, but they are not.

If mother of runes was legal, I would quit the format. It basically says "Once per turn, counter target spell that targets a creature you control, that creature also gains unblockable. Also, this includes abrupt decay."
It would be broken beyond belief, it would be almost as terrible as if they unbanned deathrite shaman, you might as well be playing legacy.

It's only illegal due to not being printed after 8th edition.
