Why is scapeshift so commonly played in modern

Modern forum

how does it work?

First off, it isn't that common anymore. It was very popular after Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle was unbanned, but quickly dropped in popularity as people realized how mediocre the deck was. In certain metas it is very powerful, but generally does poorly against midrange strategies, which are the most popular decks in the format.

As for how it works, you cast it when you have 7/8 lands, sacrifice them all, and go get valakut and 6 mountains, or two valakuts and 6 mountains.

Please link the cards in your post. You can do this by typing this:

[ [ scapeshift ] ]

But without the spaces. It'll return Scapeshift . Also, The Wizard got it all right. Triggered abilities and the stack work in weird ways. Such is MtG :P

It works because they all enter at the same time, and check for other mountains at the same time, seeing each other.

I played a lot of Scapeshift previous to the drs banning because it was resilient against Jund when built midrange-y. Obstinate Baloth is perfect against Lili. It's a really underrated deck because most people just build for the straight combo win.

The fastest possible Scapeshift win is turn 4, where you ramp with multiple Search for Tomorrow and Farseek to get to 7 lands on turn 4. You cast Scapeshift and get 2 Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and 6 Mountain /Stomping Ground /Steam Vents to deal 36 damage to your opponent. Hopefully by this point they've taken some damage from fetch/shocklands and you win then and there. If not, hopefully you draw a ramp spell or a fetchland for another Mountain to win the game. Here's the nuts and bolts:

Turn 1: Land, Search for Tomorrow

Turn 2: Land, Search for Tomorrow , Search for Tomorrow

Turn 3: Land, Farseek , Farseek (Search for Tomorrow resolves to get you up to 4 lands)

Turn 4: 2x Search for Tomorrow resolve to get you up to 8 lands. Scapeshift sacrificing 8 lands for 2 Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and 6 Mountain s of varying types.

Of course, there are a plethora of ways to get there, but that's what I thought of off the top of my head. Hope this helped!
