Why isnt Disciple of the Vault run in affinity? It would be great with Arcbound Ravager!

It was, and it would be, if two things were true.

  1. We had the artifact lands legal

  2. We had Skullclamp legal

Both of those being false really hurts the Disciple's playability

I would also say that if he were also an artifact creature, he'd be playable. But not adding to the artifact count weakens him a bit.

If you check out the last season of the gauntlet of greatness where they did no ban list modern you'll see that they did use disciple but only because they had access to Vault of Whispers

Disciple of the Vault is playable, but not terribly reliable. If you are going to use him, you have to build your deck largely around that choice. You are lowering your artifact count for the advantage of possibly adding extra life loss to Arcbound Ravager. This means not only that you need Disciple of the Vault and Arcbound Ravager on the battlefield together but also that you need extra artifacts to sacrifice. Hence, using Thoughtcast becomes a bit obligatory, but the card is harder to use because you have fewer artifacts. Then, you might find yourself wanting to use Paradise Mantle in lieu of Springleaf Drum for faster affinity, etc.

Anyway, there are other decks where he becomes more useful. If you have Disciple of the Vault and Enduring Renewal on the battlefield and Hangarback Walker, Shifting Wall, or Phyrexian Marauder in your hand, you have a win combo. If you have Disciple of the Vault, Krark-Clan Ironworks, and Myr Retriever on the battlefield along with another Myr Retriever in your hand, on the battlefield, or in your graveyard, you also have a winning combo.
