Why Tasigur ???
Modern forum

As far as I know Tasigur, the Golden Fangs activated ability Is a tad too slow for standard unless your running a removal or control heavy deck.
So basically it's a 6 CMC delvable 4/5. That has constrains since its legendary.
Hooting Mandrills is a 4/4 with trample for the same CMC.
So, what makes that one toughness so good for standard.
I'm working on a budget modern junk deck so convince me.

Blocks Seige Rhino, doesn't die to Stoke the Flames, probably nets you a couple random cards every game...

Exactly what TurboFagoot said, siege rhino is a big deal in both standard and modern which makes tasigur that much more relevant.

so I have a couple questions for you. you are asking about him in standard, but you are talking about wanting to build a modern deck, did you mean to ask about him in modern?
if so, he doesn't die to Lightning Bolt or abrupt decay, which are the 2 most ubiquitous removal spells in the format. beyond that, he is essentially a 1 mana 4/5. which is great on offense as another virtual Tarmogoyf, and he can block very effectively as well. his ability is definitely slow, but the modern format has slowed down a bit. it isn't as much of a "turn 4 format" as it used to be. midrange decks are more popular now than ever (well, at least since the fall of jund). anyway, if you have nothing else to be doing, his ability is fantastic
February 24, 2015 1:34 a.m.
Not only is he another goyf but he also effectively hoses goyf. And as others put it he blocks almost anything without dying.
February 24, 2015 2:07 a.m.
I wouldn't say Tasigur actually hoses a goyf dan8080. Yes, he delves out your own graveyard which gives him the capability but Tarmogoyf isn't just checking your opponents yard. /
/
has more than enough ways to fill up its yard without its opponent's help. If he ACTUALLY hosed a goyf, junk wouldn't have been playing him in any number in the mainboard.
As for WHY Tasigur is good:
- He passes the Lightning Bolt test.
- He blocks Siege Rhino and usually a Tarmogoyf
- Doesn't die to Abrupt Decay
- It can gain pure card advantage in the
/
/
mirror as well as in your Twin match ups when the games grind to a halt.
- Potentially a 4/5 for a
, which is huge for a deck that typically has to decide "Do I play a guy or hold up for removal?" Banana king lets you do both.
February 24, 2015 2:26 a.m.
"banana king lets do you both" - enough of a statement for me to go buy two additional playsets...just take my monies!
February 24, 2015 2:52 a.m.
And I know it's been said, but he isn't too slow in standard. People are just wary of tossing more than 1-2 into a deck because he's legendary. He's netting you a card as early as turn five, and is probably one of the best mid-late game top decks in the game, in both modern and standard. "Oh I drew a tasigur? Let me just play him for one mana and activate his ability two times, get two cards, untap, draw another card. Hmm, did I get a kill spell? Probably, so let me kill something, solidify my board position, and we can go from there." It doesn't even matter if tasigur died. He just selectively divination'd for you. A reverse Dig Through Time if you will. If he didn't die, he's going to do it again. And again. And again.
February 24, 2015 3:51 a.m.
His ability really isn't that fantastic. Sure, it's pretty great, but not fantastic. Decent CA if you have the mana to spare. Even better if you've used Scooze to clear out the useless cards from your GY.
Essentially he's a 1 mana 4/5. The extra toughness makes him comfortably block other threats like Siege Rhino and Tarmogoyf which is worthwhile.
Also with Twin and Burn around modern should still be viewed as a T4 format. It's just that BG/x has adequate control elements in the early stages of the game to push into T5+
February 24, 2015 4:40 a.m.
The reason why BG/x has slowed down and started focusing more on midrange elements is actually quite interesting, but it's a different story.
February 24, 2015 4:42 a.m.
I'd like to hear! I'm honestly quite curious on the subject
February 24, 2015 6:18 a.m.
Another reason to play Tasigur, the Golden Fang: you cannot Spell Snare him. How often have I been in the spot, where I have multiple two-drops in my hand and know that it's getting snared. How awesome is it right now, to just slam a Tasigur into their open Spell Snare. Also playing him on T3 while also killing your opponent's threat is a huge tempo-swing.
February 24, 2015 6:46 a.m.
God yeh. He's eaily T3'able. He suffers from less interference from Goyf and has a decent ability. I don't know if it's just me being mental but I see his price tag rising a lot in the future, as in like $40 or more. There are so many decks that can run him and he seems to only have upside.

I had a chance to score two of these guys during a prerelease when they were like $1 each and no one saw what he would become, and didn't take it. To this day I kick myself.
February 24, 2015 8:23 a.m.
I know what you mean. I had the chance to pickup 150 Goblin Rabblemaster for 1$ each shortly after the release of M15, I was so close to buying. I was kinda mad when he spiked to 15$...

ChiefBell: I have my foil set. That's all I need :3
He looks pretty as a 1-of in my Gifts deck- especially since I get so much darn use out of his ability.
February 24, 2015 10:47 a.m.
ChiefBell We should start a BGx thread to talk about how the format has slowed down, evolved and why. I've played the deck since the wee beginning of Modern and would love to discuss it's older and current forms. I know others would be interested as well.

with tasigur + grim lavamancer, The worst card I'm getting back from the grave yard tends to be either a bolt, remand, or terminate. the more midrange your deck is the better the cards you'll get off him.
February 24, 2015 12:57 p.m.
Not to mention Stubborn Denial + Tasigur, the Golden Fang is pretty funny.
February 24, 2015 1:02 p.m.
so I get the delve for + a single
but how sustainable/consistent is he? if your opponent kills your Tasigur, how fast can you fill up your graveyard again IN MODERN for 1-2 drop casting?
February 24, 2015 3:41 p.m.
With Liliana of the Veil in your deck cr14mson? Fairly easily. Once you get past t4 or so with a Liliana in play you're going to either play what you top deck or pitch it to Liliana if its an Inquisition of Kozilek or a Thoughtseize. Not to mention you still have fetches for land drops that can happen in the more mid to late game. Even if you don't cast him for a if you have the 4 open after casting him you're pretty happy with him in the later game.
February 24, 2015 3:49 p.m.
cr14mson there's a deck on here, Tasigur and the Big Fish, that's based off a deck Patrick Chapin ran at the PT and upgraded to flow better than Chapin's list. I've playtested with the list to test my own lists and others and it drops Tasigur or angler for that matter on T2 or 3 consistently and gets lots in its graveyard for future castings.

In the event that his ability isn't used is angler arguably better because he can kill goyfs and rhinos?
February 25, 2015 12:27 a.m.
Angler costs two more mana to cast, right? That's not an insignificant cost. Tasigur can just be cast on curve on turn three or four, with removal backup. Angler needs some dedicated cards to get out early. It's not a free cost to play, as Tasigur is in the average black/green or black/blue based deck.
February 25, 2015 12:29 a.m.
It's still one more card or one more turn to cast it. Not insignificant in modern.
February 25, 2015 12:50 a.m.
His future price will depend on what delve cards we get in dragons. If we got something like a Treasure Cruise but for a draw 2, that would probably see some play and outshine him a bit. The only reason he's so popular at the moment is he's the only good delve card and therefore the best way to make use of your entire graveyard.
TurboFagoot says... #2
The ability is actually very good, and not too slow for many modern match ups. Also the 5th toughness lets it block Siege Rhinos.
