Brewing in Pauper

Pauper forum

So I'm taking the plunge and going to try out Pauper over the next little while. I've heard it is a great format for testing brews and trying new things. I suppose the question I must pose is this: Are 3 colour decks a viable option. And, if I were to attempt a Sultai control deck, what does Green have to offer in the format?

You don't really have much in the way of board clear in the format, so I would stick to just control. Green doesn't offer much of anything but creatures and some combat tricks, so your sweepers (Evincar's Justice, Pestilence, Crypt Rats, Fade Away) are going to hurt you a lot if you get into green. Finding a finisher that has some sort of graveyard recursion seems ideal here as well, so green might come in for that if anything. Maybe also some life gain elements like Feed the Clan.

Green has plenty of hexproof dudes like Slippery Bogle, Silhana Ledgewalker and Gladecover Scout, to go along with Rancor. If you want to just do green beatdown, Aurochs Herd is simply the best. You also have an infinite combo with Midnight Guard + Presence of Gond . And the most broken card for pauper ever, Sprout Swarm. Other than those, just basic ramping and such.

The only 3 color deck I recall ever seeing competitively was RUG Atog. Its not the most resilient deck, but it can kill you in an instant if you aren't ready.

Unforgivn_II isn't Affinity a 4 colour deck though? Well.. technically. I mean artifacts and what not. I'm already running with Delver and UB Teachings (yay for cheap online decks). But I also enjoy brewing. I was also considering Grixis.

I don't recall seeing any good affinity decks. Pauper has taken a huge hit in popularity once they removed it from the dailies on MTGO. Now it's solely casual, as the 8 man pods never fire and 1v1 for tix is slow. So my knowledge may be outdated, as I haven't played in some time. I believe the Atog deck is different from affinity as well. It basically uses the artifact lands and some other cheap artifacts to swing for the win. The deck I was most familiar with was UR Eye Candy. Mono devotion and mono delver or faeries were possibly better at the time, but I always had a great record with Eye Candy. Too explosive, with too many ways to preempt any attempts to stop it

Unforgivn_II I think they brought the Daily tourney's back. Because I am currently looking at a list of Daily Pauper Swiss events.

Also, this is what I was referring to as Affinity. I'm guessing it isn't the technical term for the deck because I see Atog in there. As I said, I'm new to the format. But I suppose the general consensus is that 3 colour decks don't often work? It's a pity, I thought the new gain lands would have offered some form of flexibility. Though I suppose I'll brew anyway.

The gain lands are too slow, but that's really the only decent fixing at the common level, so it would have to do. Pauper is faster than modern. Decks can kill you on T3, and rarely T2.

And yeah, I guess that's the deck. The white card is only in half of the decks though, so I wasn't sure if we were talking about the same deck.

You don't need to be blazing fast in pauper, you just need to have strong interaction if you want to live. Just keep your Vapor Snags and Snaps and Geth's Verdicts ready and you should do fine
