Pauper "Sealed"

Pauper forum

It's been a few weeks, but I went to an event and thought I would share it with the community. There was a charity gaming event here in town, and one of my LGS's contribution was what they referred to as Sealed Pauper. Essentially, he showed up with about six 5,000 count boxes full of commons, and a land box, and gave everyone an hour to build a 40 card deck with a 15 card sideboard using the pauper constructed rules (ban list and 4 of limit enforced, basically).

It made for an interesting format, though I would have liked to see a few differences (mostly, make it a full 60 card deck, as I made 2 decks, one for me and one for my six year old daughter, after running about 5-10 minutes late, and I X-0'd the event.). What really made it interesting, though was that due to the sheer volume of cards, and the lack of consistent organization, it would be nearly impossible to sit down and just make a tier 1 deck in an hour. Also, since people have been free to pick over these boxes, many of the premium commons that are format staples just aren't there.

All in all, a fun time was had by all. But I'm curious what your thoughts are. Would something like that interest you if offered by your LGS, what would be your strategy for building be, have you done something like this?

I think this would be pretty fun, but I'd worry that there would be way too many cards to try and go through and I would end up stressing out. I get tired of searching through singles when I'm trying to find stuff for my own decks lol. Couldn't imagine I'd have the patience to sit there for an hour trying to shuffle through that amount of cards.

Did they just let you pick any card out of the box or was it sort of structured where its turn based? Is it a free for all kind of draft where I can just grab a handful of cards and grab whatever I want from that?

I think my strategy would be the same as other drafts in that I would search for something that I think is cool and try to build around that. For Ixalan, that meant drafting dinos and trying to beat face. It would be hard to focus with such a large pool to choose from though. I'd probably default to a mono or two color deck and try to get as much removal as possible and some fatties for late game.

This was done free-for-all. Fortunately, we were few enough in number that nobody was tripping over anybody, nor were did anybody seem to feel like they couldn't get to any box they wanted to. Two digging through one box at a time didn't seem problematic, but I could see three getting old real quick.

As for strategy for me, since I knew I would be building my daughter's deck, and I knew I wanted to keep it fairly simple, I was going through mostly green, looking for ramp and big dumb creatures, meanwhile figuring I could pull any slivers to the side for my own stuff. Unfortunately, I couldn't find some of the key slivers I knew I would need (specifically Gemhide Sliver and Virulent Sliver), but I did find a chunk of Thallids (Thallid, Thorn Thallid, and Thallid Devourer, along with Night Soil) from Fallen Empires, and ended up making a Saproling deck.
