Pauper Tournaments

Pauper forum

Recently I have been interested in getting into Pauper with some of my buddies, additionally i pitched the idea to have pauper tourneys at my LGS and the owner thought it was a great idea. So, for those of you who have something similar in your area how do you run the events? Is it a normal prize payout, do you use the ban list? Is the attendance normally high enough to run a normal sized tournament? Pauper isn't typically a paper format, but I thought it would be a good way to allow some kids in the area to play and not have to pay insane amounts to play and be good in standard. Basically any tips you have on this, whether it be recruiting new people for the format or actually running a tournament I'd love to hear it.

From my experience, you need to advertise a lot. People will come to the event, but only if you express how cheap and fun it can be. Everyone has commons. Make sure your shop has some pauper staples in stock like delver, Gary, kiln fiend, etc etc.

We used the mtgo banlist + some other things that are kind of broken (I think hymn to tourach was on our list).

But yeah, as long as you advertise it as super cheap, kid friendly, and for a very long time prior, you should have a decent turn out.

ThatJunkMage hymn isn't pauper legal as it was never printed on mtgo at common. If it had been, it would be banned. Also, who is gary?

But yeah, paper pauper is awesome. I built a paper pauper RUG tron and is was VERY easy to convert it into a casual modern deck.

Point is, pauper decks can easily become fun casual decks and are about 20 bucks (assuming you don't pick burn which, for once, is actually the most expensive deck in the meta).

I ran a peasant tournament (pauper + 5 uncommons). It was a lot of fun. I have a banlist specific to that format if you're interested. I advertised for months ahead of time and built some peasant decks myself to play against people. An Orzhov Nightsky Mimic deck won the whole thing, with R/G slivers coming in pretty high.
