Pauper Tourney?

Pauper forum

I'm thinking of starting a Pauper tournament within my playgroup. I could bore you with all the details of it all, but nobody wants that. My question is, what should I ban within my playgroup? I've got some cards decided already, but I don't want one guy to walk in with some broken combo deck nobody saw coming, or just an unbeatable deck that makes it no fun. The few cards I have chosen so far are:

Isochron Scepter

Anything Infect

As you can see, not a very large list ATM. What do you guys think should be banned? I don't want to make it not fun by nerf in the hell out of everything, but I also want the games to not be steamrolls. Thanks!

I've seen situations where Gray Merchant of Asphodel was banned, it may be something tO consider.

Isochron Scepter is an uncommon and was never printed as a common. Therefore, it should be illegal in the pauper format.

Are you asking for cards other than cards already on the pauper banlist?

wasianpower Yes, I am looking for cards that make games not fun outside of the already banned cards.

avrgeboy123 Thanks for pointing that out, I completely forgot to check that.

I am myself making a pauper this month. Things to note:

  • Pauper is primarily a MTGO format. Thus, the official banlist reflects what is available there as commons.

  • The official banlist is:

Cloud of Faeries,Cloudpost,Cranial Plating,Empty the Warrens,Frantic Search,Grapeshot,Invigorate,Temporal Fissure andTreasure Cruise

  • We have chosen the following common rarity ruling: "Anything printed as a common online or offline is fair game, minus the banlist". That means that cards like Battle Screech are OK, despite being a common only online.

  • In addition to the banlist above, the following paper-only commons are also banned: Goblin Grenade (too strong), Hymn to Tourach (too strong) and High Tide (just in case).

And that is everything!

My group has been going solely by the online banlist and it's worked so far.

However, I can understand an additional banning of Goblin Grenade and Hymn to Tourach, too.

Personally, I think it's better to not ban anything beyond the official banned list, unless something is just dominating your local meta. I can't speak for everyone, but as a magic player, I don't want to be protected from the big scary deck, especially before I've had a chance to see it in action. I also don't want to have to leave a sanctioned legal deck on the sidelines just because somebody thought a critical card in it was too good.

I agree with Dracoson. The official banlist prevents you and your colleagues from building too powerful decks, and if someone does, you can prepare some counters in your sidedeck. I usually play Infect in the tournaments I play with my friends, but they adapted to my playstyle, so it doesn't give me any special advantage.
