Back playing in paper

Pioneer forum

StuBi and I played Pioneer face to face a fortnight ago, for the first time in a long while, in Australia.

Of course, not knowing our local meta, we ended up at the bottom of the pile.

We adjusted some different old Standard decks, and will be having another crack this Friday.

Even though we lost, we had fun. Caught up with some people we haven't seen for a long time, and met some new ones who were nice.

There were many interesting decks.

I'm glad to see that Pioneer is alive and well. It seems to have replaced Standard for FNM at our LGS.

I'm not really surprised, as I had heard that Standard was struggling. A lot of the Standard players have just been able to bring their decks along to Pioneer, so they are still getting value out of them.

Also looks good for the future of Pioneer.

+1 for the post

I just think its great to hear about people playing paper Magic at their LGS.... even before the pandemic I haven't been in a long time and really miss the experience.

I really hope that when Grand Prix/Magic Fests start being a thing again Pioneer gets another opportunity to shine; I think there is definitely a Need/Desire for the format for the same reasons there is a Need/Desire for the Modern format.

What was The Deck that caught your attention while you played there? I Imagine a lot of people would run beefed-up versions of their Standard decks/Mimic there Arena/Historic decks.

JANKYARD_DOG I live in Australia.

As a whole we have been very sensible about social distancing, washing our hands, wearing face masks, and staying inside as much as possible.

That has meant that we have been able to start up in-person events, with less people, a lot earlier than other countries.

Mind you, we are also the idiots who started the world wide toilet paper hoarding trend, so not everything we do is great ...

Icbrgr there was a Combo deck that I had never seen before.

It used creatures who did Opponent damage for non-creature spells, lots of draw, and mana generation.

I don't know if that is a known deck. If not, it was very original.

Pioneer is my favorite constructed format esp since they banned all the combo pieces, it made the format fun again. I'm torn between atomoy, a monoblack devotion idea I have, or maybe trying out rakdos arcanist.

Pioneer is wide open and a ton of fun to play because of that

I did not enjoy Combo Winter.

We already have enough formats that combo off.

Pioneer is much more fun, to me, as a bash fest.

We were never in lockdown, but most people chose to stay inside, apart from shopping for food, and other necessities.

We have been told to wear face masks from time to time, and places won't let you in unless you are both wearing a mask, and have checked in with a government app.

The app alerts you if someone sharing an area shared with you tests positive for Covid-19.

If you have potentially been in contact with someone was has Covid-19, the app won't let you check in. You won't be allowed to enter the facility.

There is hand sanitiser available when you check in, and some places also take your temperature, before they let you in.

Crosses on the floor show where you should stand in lines, to help with social distancing. Most people automatically keep a good distance apart.

If we have one new case in a state, all borders to that state will be closed.

The only bad thing that has happened in my country is toilet paper hoarding. That was dealt with fairly quickly. I know that my family just stuck to buying a normal amount, and we never ran out.

A lot of perspex screens have been set up, to ensure social distancing.

I played Pioneer again tonight. This time with a different deck. I also adjusted a different deck for StuBi

Most of the people were the same ones who played last week.

I came last, because I got mana screwed in the third game in one match, and forgot a draw trigger in the third game in another.

I did win a couple of games, though. I LOVE playing Izzet Artifacts too, so I was in heaven with that.
