I ran across Dimir Charm while building my pioneer Esper control list. Anyone else feel this may be playable? The removal hits a lot of things we see in pioneer deck lists. The counter can be relevant in a few matchups. The pitch cards to the grave lets you foil some game plans and set up your opponent’s next draw.
Does the existence of things like Drown in the Loch and Fatal Push just make it worse?
I think you’re dead on with modes 1 and 2 being outclassed by Drown. My thoughts with mode 3 was to hit opponent with it. Pitch a win con or throw land in the yard when they are having mana troubles. Clearly I was hoping the card could be better than it actually is.

I hadn't thought about that angle, perhaps it could fit in a resource/mana denial BGu deck that runs some combination of Field of Ruin , Elvish Reclaimer , Ramunap Excavator , Assassin's Trophy , Thoughtseize to get greedy mana bases and mana-screw certain high-costed control/ramp decks or low land aggro decks. But that game plan seems just atrocious against any mono colored or midrange deck, especially the Black midrange deck that seems like the best deck in the format right now.

Magnanimous, you are right about that. One thing that intrigues me, though, is the idea of feeding a Hedonist's Trove . Is there a more efficient card that lets me pitch stuff to my opponent’s graveyard, that can also be used as utility in an Esper control shell?
Trove is a great target for my Jace, Architect of Thought , and I get to snag something fun from opponent, too.

Personally I think it's a little underrated. Even if Drown in the Loch is a bit better, Dimir Charm is still perfectly functional, and modal cards are usually a little better than you think they are. Though mode 1 is a bit too limited, it's still nice to have access to, as already pointed out, and mode 2 is a perfectly good kill spell most of the time, but mode 3 is where it's at. If you look at it a certain way, it's very nearly a Fateseal 3, and if you need to, you can even use it on yourself, either to dive for a certain card, fuel delve spells or whatever. I actually use two of them in my modern mill deck, Waste Away

Strong utility charm. Having 3 modes available gives high flexibility, which raises how playable it is.
I have a friend who is absolutely wild about this card. He sees it as a great enabler in place of Faithless Looting , and that is his primary use for it in decks. Decks that play well from the GY can use this. Being instant speed as well as having two other meaningful modes is pretty rad.

I do think Drown in the Loch is just better if you're playing it for the first two modes, especially as graveyard hate doesn't seem to be as prevalent as in Modern. Many decks that would want the third ability already play green and Commune with the Gods over it.
It could possibly work in a counter/removal heavy Grixis deck as Drown in the Loch 5-8 or (more likely imo) as a flexible card in a UB midrange deck that values the graveyard for Prized Amalgam , Scrapheap Scrounger , Bloodsoaked Champion , Arclight Phoenix and/or delve cards like Dig Through Time and Tasigur, the Golden Fang . In the first scenario, I don't see it making the cut as too many better cards exist in that slot, in the second I don't know if there is enough support for a deck that runs a graveyard strategy and protects it with counters/removal
