Custom categorization
Site Updates forum
Posted on Dec. 22, 2014, 3:56 p.m. by yeaGO
Two new features hit the site today:
Custom categories. While adding cards to your deck, feel free to add hashtags to cards.
Example:
3x Phyrexian Dreadnought #Beatsticks
2x Shock #DD #Ping
The second feature is related. New option on decks to specify the default categorization. There's also a new option in the dropdown to make it categorize by your custom hashtags.
I know, awesome.

Well, this IS actually one of the best things ever! Look at my deck for example: Heroes of Strength and Swiftness (Shameless self promotion...)
Now I can clearly see how many enablers and heroics I have! Too good! :D

When you catagorize the mainboard, the sideboard and maybeboards disappear.

Confirmed the error Matsi883 is getting.
On a related note, can we have visual separation of the sideboard and maybeboard? Perhaps add a horizontal rule below the mainboard, then insert the sideboard and maybeboard between the mainboard and description?

Additional bug: default display by custom categories in EDH decks causes the commander to disappear just like the sideboard and maybeboard.

Sweet! I'll update my decks once I get back from vacation.
Is the category view replacing the standard type view? I noticed it happening on a few decks.

Femme_Fatale says... #18
You get to choose if you want to replace it like that.

Thanks for this, yeaGO. This is a pretty awesome feature!
If it can be done and you have time, it would be nice if characters like "-" or " " could be used without those cards getting lumped into an "Other" category. I'd also like to be able to use multiple capital letters in a category title.
Ideally I'd like it to parse from the hashtag to end of line as a literal string and use it unmodified. It sounds simple enough, but I know it doesn't always work out that way in practice.

I really like this, but I have a suggestion that would improve it a lot I think.
This doesn't interact at all with sideboards, which is an issue, since most decks are 75 card decks, sideboards are extremely important. I understand the reason to keep the side and main separate, but could you separate them in some other way? Perhaps, the horizontal line that Epochalyptik suggested, or something even better, in my opinion anyway, different colored names depending on the boards cards are found in. That would even allow people to categorize the maybeboard cards, if they were strongly considering them for something. Just a thought.
If it isn't possible or is too much work to accomplish, I understand, but I figured I'd throw the idea out there just in case it was possible, because I know it could potentially help when people are counting answers to various problems etc.

That' a really great feature! I like to break my deck down into different categories in the description, now I can do it right in the list! I especially like that you can give more than one # to a card.
My suggestions for this are the same as Obake's:
Make (at least some) special characters legal: dash, underscore, dot, space, numbers, etc.
Alternatively or additionally make multiple uppercase letters legal. As it is now, #GreatCards is converted to #Greatcards, which is a bit hard to read.
Thanks for the great work!

Great feature, but please allow spaces, dashes, etc, in categories!
January 7, 2015 6:46 p.m.
Great addition!
In EDH decks general is shown in card list but it is impossible to add custom tag to it because if you add the card in actual card list also, it will count as double (ie you will have 101 cards). Could that card have automatically #General tag in it when the card is put to Commander field? Or possibly remove it alltogether from normal listing (hovering over picture of general should display bigger picture though, as it does with normal listing). Now the options are to keep it as "Other" or have 101 cards in listing.
Also, I would really love that spacing too. Or at least underscore.
January 16, 2015 4:23 a.m.
Nevermind. I just figured out that you can also add the tag to the commander field

Two things:
1) If you edit by board, all the tags are deleted. That is quite frustrating and should probably be fixed.
2) I'm going to repeat my request for special characters. I really like this feature. While deck building, I realize things like "Oh, maybe a little too much removal" much faster. It's great to show people what the different parts of your deck are supposed to do without having them read a long description. But all this gets hampered by the tags being unreadable.
Infinite Mana Combo 1
looks sooooo much better than

I would also like to suggest quick adding tags in some way. Where we can either in the deckbuilding panel just click a tag and it will appear where our ... whatever the typing line thing is called. Then we can have it on the main deck page where we can click on a card and choose which tags to add that we've pre-set to the deck. Finally have the edit board have the same thing, where we can just select which tag to use.

yeaGO, any thoughts on adding the option for special characters/uppercase letters? Also what F_F suggested.

so, cool job, but whats up with spaces not working? spaces need to be a thing here.
February 22, 2015 5:42 p.m.
I don't see spaces happening as that's what's used as a break to go to the next tag or reference.
Underscores are the most realistic possibility, which id be more than happy with.

shinobigarth says... #31
couldn't an underscore tell it to put a space in?
February 22, 2015 6:40 p.m.
shinobigarth says... #33
or wrapping the text in # signs so, #Burn spells# tells it to include everything in the #'s as the category?
February 22, 2015 7:35 p.m.
I'm not sure how to use this feature.
For my commander deck I click "edit", then I go to the Commander line and put #General after Nekusar's name. No custom category is created for him.
In the main board I put "1x Whip of Erebos (000) #Enchantment" because I'd like to list it as an Enchantment, but nothing changes it's still listed as an Artifact. I also just tried #Test instead of #Enchantment but no "Test" category is created still listed under Artifact.

You have to set how you view the deck as custom category htgtmd.
March 25, 2015 7:39 p.m.
Oh I see how it works now. Thank you! I just need to add the appropriate hashtag to every card right?

so how do I make it so when you click my deck link the custom categories are just there, without you having to select them? Thanks ! :)
March 29, 2015 4:19 p.m.
Can you add custom categories while using the "deck-list" class in the tappedout.js script? Adding the #category seems to work but I don't know how to set it as the default instead of type since there is no 'deck edit' page.
August 15, 2015 11:33 a.m.
You can. write "#Catagory_Name" to get "Catagory Name" (without the quotations)

Oh, so I can now make one with: #CardsThatAnnoyTheOpponents ?
