Beginner in Springfield, MO looking for learning partners

The title kinda says it. I'm trying to get into the game, but I don't really have any friends who play, mostly on account of not knowing anybody after spending years away from the area. It really doesn't help that my first experience with playing consisted of losing twelve games straight in Sealed format (which seems like the best chance I have at an even pairing in deck strengths), so I'm feeling pretty down on the game despite really wanting to like it. Is anyone in/around the area and interested in helping a new player learn?

While I'm at it, does anyone know of other good places to look?

We all have to start somewhere.

I'd say go to your local card shop, and make some friends there.

I live in Springfield as well. I would steer clear of Meta Games(seeing your other posts and all) since you're a newer player. I would tell you to go to Changeling Games which is in the shopping area on Glenstone and Sunshine. The owner Joe is a super cool guy who makes it a point that nobody gets a raw deal. Meta is great and a much bigger store but if you're not grinding for the Pro Tour you probably won't find much fun in it. Changeling just has a much better feel.

There are a few other shops in the area but they are usually fairly poor in their operations and game nights are a joke.

My email is listed on my profile. Shoot me an email if you want and we can chat more.

Cortillaen Welcome to the world of Magic! :)

I can say for certain that you've come to the right place if you're a new player looking to learn more about the game. Tappedout has a very helpful community eager to give suggestions and advice on your deck. If you have a deck on here without very much traffic and you'd like someone to take a look at it, just throw me a message on my wall and I'd be happy to take a look.

One of the best ways for new players to start is watching MTG professional coverage (widely available on youtube). At first, as you watch professionals play, you're going to notice that the players are playing cards you might not be aware of. That's okay. There are many resources out there (like this website for example) that provide a card search engine. Anytime a player plays a card, especially if it's SCG Live hosting the event, the commentator will say the name of the card that is played. You can pause the video, look up the card, and then know what the pros are playing. SCG Live specifically has good, helpful, and enlightening commentary. Knowing what the pros are playing and watching them play will help you in the following ways:

  1. Increase your card knowledge.
  2. Help you understand the basics to higher level play, like looking at your opponent's open mana during your turn and imagining all the likely cards they are about to play against you. Perhaps eventually you can watch your opponent play one land and one spell and immediately be able to predict about 90% of their decklist.
  3. Help you dive into and understand the format you're most interested in.
  4. Inspire you to build new and better decks.
  5. Allow you to converse with other magic players more easily, which will slowly grow into a good group of friends.

Good luck!
