[Community Discussion]: The name game

Welcome to another Community Discussion proposed by ductapedeckbox!

This one is about naming. How did you come up with your username? Is there a story behind it?

What about your deck names? In my article Getting More Views on Your Decks, I discuss how having unique or interesting deck names can attract views and feedback. Do you like to come up with deck names that are pop or geek culture references? Song names or lyrics? Something else?

Tell your stories here (and feel free to link to a deck, but don't go overboard, and please don't use deck-large notation).

I generally just kinda cryptically describe the mechanic or theme I'm using if that makes sense

ThisIsBullshit says... #2

Jp3ngu1nb0y it's usually because your name registers in our minds as jppenguinboy, so when we actually have to type it out it becomes much harder than we realized.

At least that's how it is for me.

I started here as jminute14 (first initial, last name, jersey number) and started building decks. My current handle is related to a few things, but it actually started with this deck I built around Chandra Ablaze and Liliana's Caress...discard and burn, cause you know, it sets your mind ablaze...It helps that I have a psychology background and work in the counseling field. What is the mind if it isn't something to burn to the ground to start fresh?

Oww99 says... #7

I have two main usernames I use. Either Oww99 (The standard initials and birthyear), or Captenundead. I got Captenundead from when I was a little kid signing up for a WoW account. Me and my friend wanted to get into it. You can guess how young I was, because I couldnt spell Captain. His father's character's name was CaptainDeath so I wanted to play on that. I realized soon after that my spelling error. I decided to stick with it though, because nobody uses "Capten" in their names. So I have my Xbox account as captenundead and WoW characters like Captenundead, Captenholy, or Captenmourne. Ah yes...Captenmourne.

JexInfinite says... #8

My name, Jex, came about when I was playing pinball, and I randomly selected 3 letters. It sounded awesome, so I stuck with it. The Infinite part came later when I decided that I would rule the universe.

My Jeskai control deck, I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid you can't do that., is an obvious reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

My Soul Sisters deck, Soul Sisters 2: Revenge of the Sisterhood, sounds like a super generic sequel, something that a crappy Magic movie might do.

Epochalyptik - "It was the title given to me by the Ancients, and I carry it with pride"

Final fantasy 7 reference, or just wishful thinking?

Never played FF.

Matsi883 says... #11

Matsi is a combination of my first and last names (mat- si-). 883 is just a random combination of letters.

I choose my names to sound completely random but make sense. For example, my newest deck, 72 Percent, is a reference to how the deck practically breaks Thoughtseize, but it sounds kind of random, which is what I wanted.

gnarlicide says... #12

My UN is a handle from my PSN account back in 2007. I use it for all games that I play or sign into.

I made the word up back when I was a teenager, and wanted to describe something soo gnarly it killed all other things.

My deck names... I usually name them after songs that I like. It takes some time and careful deliberation. But usually the song title, to me, captures the essence to the deck itself. I have like 1 or 2 decks that I havent done that with, but thats because I have not found a song that properly describes them, yet...

erabel says... #13

Username is first initial last name. Working on getting something better, but it'll suffice for now.

My deck names just kind of have to... come to me. Talrand's Party of One came about because the deck is creatureless, Kami're and gimme a hug!: Crescent Moon Group Hug was because I wanted a pun.

Skimm3r says... #14

Skimm3r has been my universal user name for a couple years now. When I was creating a Minecraft user, I was playing an awesome game called Conduit, and my favorite enemy was the Skimmer. I changed a letter to a 3, and that's what it's been for years, on everything (except YouTube, it was taken).

As for my deck names, I recognize that boring names don't get as many views, so I try to be creative when I can; but there's no specific set of things I always reference, or things I try to do.

smash10101 says... #15

A long, long time ago, I made an account on the nintendo website under the username Smashloser101, as a reference to the game Super Smash Bros. I wasn't terrible at the game, but I didn't want to brag, and I was by no means an expert, so I went with the loser, though it later changed to Smashmaster. Two months later, I made an account on the Guitar Hero Three website, this time using Slashmaster, in reference to my old username as well as my favorite character in the game, Slash. Five months after that, I made an account for Wiinode.com, but I wanted a shorter username, so I went with Smash10101. Don't know why I added the extra 01, but I did, and it stuck, and that's the username I've been using for pretty much everything since. Twitch.tv already had a Smash10101, so I stuck an extra 01 on for that, and I use my real name on Steam, but other than that, if you see a Smash10101 on the internet, it's likely me.

/walloftext

10 points to the first person to figure out when I made the first of those accounts (month and year) based on context and internet snooping. (I guess you could use those 10 points to get me to review one of your decks or something.)

I use WicKid52 because I'm 13, (Kid) and I couldn't think of anything more clever. Also, I like the number 52.

nayrash5 says... #19

My username comes from a time when I played alot of FPS games, and I just pressed a few random keys on a keyboard , and got 'Nayrash' and thats been my standard online tag ever since. Most of my deck names are either bad puns, Generic and boring names, or Lines i've coopted for my own use.

November 30, 2014 2:31 p.m.

Jay says... #20

Oh yea, and as for decks they're usually references to songs, video games, or other media. Sometimes they're just shitty jokes. Examples:

Baby, if I'm the bottom (song)

Skred Red Redemption (vidya)

Corner Girl (shitty joke)

Lhurgyof says... #21

It all started when I was in about fifth grade and I first picked up World of Warcraft. I was struggling with a character name, and a friend told me that he just picks names from Magic: The Gathering (he had a druid named Verdeloth). So, I named my character Lhurgyof; a small misspelling but pretty good working on memory. So, the name has stuck ever since.

November 30, 2014 3:07 p.m.

For a really long time, my name on everything was LuckyLydia. (Lydia is my actual name) Then, when I was playing on cockatrice, I noticed I had shit luck with my draws. I added NotSo to the front of my name, and started rolling in sweet draws. It stuck.

As far as deck naming goes, it's always either stupid puns or a simple descriptor of what the deck is.

HavokX says... #23

I played an FPS game a long time ago where the protagonist's nickname was Havoc, but I thought Havok looked cooler. Turns out it's a more popular name than I thought, so I always have to augment it. HavokX is my first choice, and SkyGeneralHavok is my second. I have no clue how I came up with that one.

My other handle is StackOverflow, which I use on steam, because I'm a programmer and I like the site.

November 30, 2014 4:25 p.m.

When I first joined the site, I went by GKirt (first initial, last name). I only used that because I was unsure of what name to use and I needed something convenient. As my love for Grixis grew, I needed a name to match. Something to show that I was more Grixis than Nicol Bolas himself. so CommanderOfBolas is what I came up with. I think it suits me quite well. I also considered "Grixis Guy" because that was the nickname given to be at my lgs after winning fnm 3 weeks in a row with my rtr/theros grixis deck.

As far as deck names go, I normally try to find some way to make a pun out of it. At least I want my deck names to sound cool and be related to the deck somehow

November 30, 2014 10:11 p.m.

TheFanatic: Glad to see I'm not the only one here who finds watching football to be a colossal waste of time!

My username came from old nicknames - Some friends always likened me to a T-Rex thanks to my large head, and others called me "Gorg" (a play on my name, Greg). I simply combined the two for a username unique enough to never be taken on any site or game so far.

My decks are normally descriptive but not completely uninteresting. Norin Causes Chaos and Momir Vig's Elves Aplenty come to mind as examples.

ArgArgBinks says... #26

My name was actually a joke. Started playing star wars force collector and realized it would be funny to have a name that sounds like mine. Just kind of stuck with it.

December 1, 2014 3:14 p.m.

CuteSnail says... #27

My US was originally Deathxblackxecho which stemmed from hearing someone mispronounce my favourite yu-gi-oh card. When I upgraded, I changed it to some more up to day. TwistedMoonlight stemmed from my favourite character from Friendship is magic, Luna/Nightmare Moon.

I tend to name my decks after references or puns, something to grab peoples attention.

Mine comes from NPC - Non Player Character. I guess it comes from my lazy gaming style. I tried using npc on a different website but it was taken, thus enpc was born. Its still pronounced (en)pc though.

D34TH_P4ND4 says... #31

Mine was just something I came up with that I thought was clever. I've been using it for a few years now and almost all of my accounts are under this name. Any D34TH_P4ND4's you see are most likely me. I've been debating changing to TJ12thlevelrouge (my initials and my favorite D&D class at a reasonably good but not arrogantly high level) Feedback?

December 1, 2014 11 p.m.

For my decks, it depends on the deck itself. Your tears are delicious is a good one to list as an example, but I have many others that aren't as catchphrased

As for my name, I used to date a girl who called me Jace, and she jokingly said she was chandra. After we broke up, I still liked the name, so I kept it. That said, if given the chance, I think I'd go for something more original

APPLE01DOJ: I'm not sure why, but whenever I pronounce your username in my head it always comes out at "Appledouche". No offense intended, that's just how I read your name lol.

GorgosaurusrexI have always pronounced APPLE01DOJ as appledojo. No clue why since it ain't even close. Your was better though.

December 2, 2014 12:03 p.m.

TheHroth says... #37

Hroth derives from Hrothgar, a name I stole originally from the book Eragon, but also appears in many other pieces of literature, as well as real life (there was a danish king who bore the name in the 6th century). Where the "The" came into play, I just thought it sounded cool :)

As for deck names, I just name them something general and boring, like Phenax EDH Deck, until I can think of something cooler and more intriguing, like The Rogue Shard of Tarkir.

December 2, 2014 12:17 p.m.

I always think of apple01doj as "apple dodge"

December 2, 2014 12:25 p.m.

MinscAndBoo says... #39

My name comes from the baddest-assinest duo in RPG history. Those who missed the original game back in 2001 should play the enhanced edition. It is required playing for anyone who considers themselves an RPG fan.

December 2, 2014 12:52 p.m.

MinscAndBoo: Baldur's Gate is one of the best games ever made, imo. There is so much stuff to do and it really makes you feel like you are playing AD&D. I have the enhanced versions of 1&2 and have played them many times (along with the originals, of course).

I've heard of 12th level rogues, but never level 12 rogues.

When I started playing Dark Age of Camelot back in 2003, I used the random name generator to pick a name. "Meecht" was the first name to came up that I liked.

As I moved from game to game, I noticed that "Meecht" was never taken. Thus, I became Meecht.

December 2, 2014 1:44 p.m.

Jeggard says... #45

My User Name came from a book series "War of the Spider Queen" by R.A. Salvador and a few other writers. Great series if you want a good read.... any ways there is a character that is part demon and part Dark Elf named Jaggred. At the time i was playing several online games and none of them allowed the name so i came up with my current name as a "close enough". The name stuck and it followed me around for several years even with friends outside of games.....

My decks are just random names that some times reference random things like:What Would Karn do???, or Whats yours, is now mine!.

December 2, 2014 1:48 p.m.

Just my Net Handle/MTGO name

December 2, 2014 3:07 p.m.

Quite a few years ago I was playing a few FPS games on the PC, notably Halo 1 PC(Still play to this day). I needed a name theatsounded badass. I thusly came up with getslayne, which I frequently shorten to Slayne.

As for my deck names, they are usually references or random things that I think sound cool.

December 2, 2014 10:24 p.m.

Wolfsbane706 says... #50

My screenname came from a screwed up version of the Shining Force promoted class "Wolf Baron". I originally though it was "Wolfbane". Since screennames like that were taken, I stuck a 6 on the end. When that didn't work, I turned it into "706" and I've stuck with it ever since.
