How to get people involved in MTG?

The LGS i play at most frequently usually has a pretty small turnout on Fridays, usually around 10 for each event. I am always trying to get more players to come out though. Its one of the reasons I have multiple decks on me all the time.

People are usually down to play a casual game, but how do I convince them to check out sanctioned play? I always let them know what a casual atmosphere it is and how friendly everyone at the game store is. Its one of the reasons I got out there on fridays.

But I would really love to get more players out there, maybe even get some into competitive play. What would you tell someone to get them into competitive play or MTG in general? I just want more people to play with.

That is a real issue and I am experiencing it with my LGS. But Bulgaria is a small country with a relatively small MTG community, so that is the main problem.

If people are up for a casual game, then an FNM is (in most cases) not that much different, except it has rounds and timers. But people are not willing to participate for various reasons. Try asking them why would they play a casual game rather than play in FNM and get free foils for doing the same thing. Other things to use:

  • So you think it is too stressful to participate in tournaments? FNM is not a tournament, the F stands for FUNday. It is basically like playing 4 casual games one after the other.

  • So you are afraid your deck does not compare to the rest? All the more reason to participate. I will lend you a competitive deck and it will help you learn what you enjoy in Magic the most, so you will get the most enjoyment out of your games.

  • So you play Magic with your friends? With your 3-4 decks you have probably seen less than 1% of the possibilities Magic can offer in its 14000 cards. Get out there and expand your horizon.

  • If you play in this small, casual tournament, you will most likely get a free foil as a price. If you do not win, I will give you one myself, but only if you participate next week as well.

The possibilities are endless, but bribing with free foils you do not care about is probably the best way to do it. Did I mention my favorite color is black?

Think of the reason that specific person likes to play MtG. For some, the game is a deeply social experience. Explain that the atmosphere is open to newbies and that it's a great opportunity to meet like-minded people. For others, MtG is about that innate desire to dominate others. Let them know that they'll get their money's worth, but only if they're good enough. Others like to trade and build up their collections. Local stores are also good bragging grounds. My point is our reasons to play the game are very different. Appealing towards that direction is your best way to go.

Give them food. Everyone's always down for food.
