Closed a box/case lid on the pad, ripped off a pretty good sized chunk of skin. There's a Band-Aid shaped indentation where I wrapped it on really tight to stop the blood flow.

FAMOUSWATERMELON I'm not quite sure. I was briefly considering a Modern Version of Spooty's showdown series and playing against users and then supplying deck construction advice, but Spooty sorta already has the Showdown thing going...

FAMOUSWATERMELON says... #6
Didn't Chief and Agent already have that going somewhere though?

Oh! Are we discussing scars?! Because I once stepped on a rusty tool sticking out of e ground, and it went almost all the way through my foot! I don't know why I say that like I'm proud!

I feel like the article flow has kind of dried up recently. Spooty's article today is the only one from all of May.

If we're talking scars, for 3 years I had a scar going down my the side of my face. its gone now.
lots of shit happened the year I got that...

There was a Modern Showdown article back on April 8, but that was the only one. I don't know if they decided not to continue or if they've just been busy.
I guess we could, you know, ask them. But if you want to generate new content, go for it.

GlistenerAgent has been off for some matters, hence why the modern version of the showdown never really went anywhere.

xzzane good choice. Thread had lost going on and popped my notifications again lol.
As for writing, I would like to see a short story/series about the game set 10-20 years in the future. Sort of when the average original player of the game is of grandparent age.
Currently the original player average age is around parent age at the moment. I am not in the mood for something serious, but something different I guess.

What are all the ways to increase rank? And also, once in the top 100, is it really hard to go back down in rank?
To clarify the second question, once you hit the top 100, how likely are you to go down in rank?

CanadianShinobi says... #16
Ah very good. My idea however, was a little more in line with Spooty's original concept.
Build a deck (something not top tier)
Challenge the site.
Play a match against a user with their submitted deck.
ChiefBell and GlistenerAgent seem more focused on playing competitive decks against each other and discussing those more competitive decks. Valuable and engaging, of course, but not precisely the same idea.
Perhaps my idea is a little too similar, but I want something to do with the community.
May 20, 2015 10:37 p.m.
Femme_Fatale says... #17
NoviceMagician, if someone is more active than you are, they'll rank faster. If you are inactive for a certain period of time, you lose your rank entirely and have to start from scratch.

CanadianShinobiExactly. So something where you make a fringe-y deck and play it against the rest? Maybe something where you make a pet deck and play it against other people's pet decks?

How about a series dedicated to discovering if there is a viable control deck in the format and exploring the various archetypes.
Edit: As an avid Control player like yourself, I can help if you deem It necessary.

@canada, why dont you just open a thread asking for Ideas?
May 20, 2015 10:41 p.m.
GlistenerAgent says... #21
Yeah but in Modern your brew is a whole lot less likely to beat decks with infinite combos, discard spells, a turn 3 clock and 1-2 mana (non-limiting) counterspells with wider range.

bijschjdbcd that quest has ended in failure. There's Twin which is technically control. I say technically because, well it is a version of control, just not the version I enjoy. I've never liked combos.
FAMOUSWATERMELON pretty much. And I think I have just the deck if I decide to follow through. That or I'll build something new.
May 20, 2015 10:43 p.m.
GlistenerAgent says... #26
That is to say, I know I wouldn't want to read about some silly brew losing or lucksacking a win off of a naturally good matchup or poor draws against a more popular deck. I want something more useful.
Fringe but playable decks should be your limit. This needs to cater to as many as possible.
May 20, 2015 10:44 p.m.
bijschjdbcd says... #27
I feel like one exists.
It just needs to be built to an appropriate metagame.
If you don't wanna do that just play some games with some non Twin control decks in the format.

CanadianShinobi says... #28
GlistenerAgent define "playable" I wasn't about to go off and build some strange budget deck. I was thinking either Temur Midrange or Grixis Control. Both have decent options and access to good cards. The fringe in Modern is vast.
May 20, 2015 10:48 p.m.
GlistenerAgent says... #29
I'm liking Esper Control. You get black removal and Path, and you get all the good sideboard cards. Jeskai is secondary and Grixis is bad.
I can seriously get behind an Ajani Vengeant. That card is GAAAAS.
May 20, 2015 10:48 p.m.
GlistenerAgent says... #31
Yeah, absolutely. So long as you aren't testing against fundamentally bad decks.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to TO on a computer for a while, so I apologize to people who may have found my thoughts on stuff educational or helpful.
May 20, 2015 10:51 p.m.
CanadianShinobi says... #33
I personally like Grixis Control, especially with Kolaghan's Command and Tasigur. Esper isn't bad, but I'm just not feeling it. Really, at best I'd run Esper Mentor and I've found that deck rather unexciting to play after I played it trying to figure out what to do with it.
May 20, 2015 10:51 p.m.
Femme_Fatale says... #34
Grixis gives you access to plenty anti-Abzan creatures.

GlistenerAgent why are you apologizing for being educational and helpful?
May 20, 2015 10:52 p.m.
GlistenerAgent says... #36
Grixis can't beat Burn. I'm doubtful that it can beat Abzan.
Esper's got all the tools, I think. Check out GreatNate's youtube channel for his base list and try going from there.
Though, again, EOT Revelation into mah negro Ajani V. is incredible.

This thread annihilates my notification feed whenever I forget to unsub.
And by the way, we have a freenode chatroom here. It's quite old, and I don't think it has seen any use in the past two years, but we can try it again.
If it gets enough attention, I'll put it in the OP.
May 20, 2015 10:57 p.m.
Femme_Fatale says... #39
You have to build the deck right GlistenerAgent, it can beat abzan quite well.
May 20, 2015 10:58 p.m.
GlistenerAgent says... #40
*sorry for not being able to contribute through Showdowns.
I don't think you should be discard-spelling in your control deck. Esper doesn't have to do this because Esper Charm is really good. Grixis basically needs Seize IMO because it doesn't have the most versatile spells --> you play right into the hands of Abzan and Burn.
May 20, 2015 10:58 p.m.
Femme_Fatale says... #41
We also have a steam group where we can chat. I've mentioned the chats before, I just didn't want them to replace forum activity. Derp, why don't you head over to one of those and bring everyone who you want to derp around with to?

Femme_Fatale says... #43
It's the creature base GlistenerAgent. Abyssal Persecutor, Stormbreath Dragon, Silent Arbiter and Wurmcoil Engine. I did a shit tonne of testing against Chief's abzan deck and it works quite fine. Definitely has troubles against burn however. I generally end up making the game go until I can drop a Wurmcoil Engine >.> 21 turns was the longest I think.

Ooh I'm a fan of Esper splash Ajani. bij draft and link me a list. I think we perhaps want a Terminate or two in there as well. Sideboard Slaughter Games, Counterflux and other cool stuff.
Femme if you build to beat Abzan you lose to most other things.

Before we embark on a purely Modern meta gaming discussion I would like to point out that if I do follow through with the article idea, it would be purely driven by the Community. I can't appease everyone, but hopefully by mixing it up from article to article I could get a good mix of casual and competitive.

Femme what you're doing isn't a control deck anymore. You're just playing all the big spells and therefore losing to every aggro deck out there.
